Part 2: the guts of the flywheel! Grab some water, a towel and a power drill. Make sure that you've wiped off the cage before you start removing all 4 of the cross braces on the cage. Put that drill into reverse and start backing out the screws on the faceplate on the mesh cage and slide it out a bit. The goal is to back them out enough to loosen the long metal strip enough for you to be able to take it out and clean it.
Continue backing out the screws, making sure to keep the nuts together with the screws until you fully remove the front faceplate and can access the flywheel housing. Once you have access, wipe down EVERY SINGLE FAN BLADE. Dust creates slippage and removes air supply and makes your machine less effective. You're making machine happy by doing this! Take your time. You should be doing this twice a year.
To put it back together, make sure the C2 is facing the right direction, throw the bolts back in, and slowly wind them back in. Don't tighten them fully, because you need to feed the plate back through. Go back in and tension your bolts, being careful to not over tension!

This is great. A real resource for the concept 2 machine and those that love them. I will say that I have but one and I found using a regular old Phillips head screw driver very easy and quick. I think if you're doing maintenance for a bunch of machines the battery operated screw driver saves time but it's probably not much time savings for just one! No batteries? No problem! Thanks again for a great video.

This video combines two of my favorite things, rowing and taking things apart (and hopefully putting them back together again). Thanks Shane, my rower is long overdue for some maintenance.

Hi Shane, you came to my rescue last week! After owning a type C rower for quite some time now, I ordered a BikeErg. After assembling it I noticed the perforated cage strip was below the level of the faceplate so I unscrewed one of the cross-braces. Now it sank even deeper in, and worse, the cross_brace wouldn’t close anymore. Now I thought I had ruined the unit and had to send it back.. Then I discovered this great video and now my BikeErg is even better than before. Thank you for this!

Good video. I do the daily wipedown after each workout, also hit the seat rollers with the unit upright. Amazing how quickly the dust and gunk build up and erode performance. Our fitness center staff are curious when I do the wipedown but are happy to see a member care about a clean machine!

Thank you for the demonstration! Just deep cleaned my RowErg for the first time tonight using this video as a guide...piece of cake! We've had it 6 months now. I bought a canvas drop cloth at the hardware store and keep the rower covered when not in use, it was only a tiny bit dirty inside, worked great and made deep cleaning inside the flywheel go much faster.

I found that my c2 in my house, even in constant carpeted rooms (thus they get vacuumed every couple weeks or so), even after 10 years was extremely clean. I just cleaned one at my gym and it was nasty, actually had some blue dustmop strings in it, a lot of stubborn linty-dust things. So keeping it covered is fine, but probably not needed in standard residential setting.

Cheers Shane I did my row erg and bike erg at the weekend (granted this does not cover bike erg, I just figured they would be similar). The only nasty surprise on the bike erg was the sensor cable attached into the flywheel. Great video as always and made the job super simple.

Instead of opening the entire assembly you can also just use compressed air from the outside. Just give it one stroke at low drag. It will spin for a while. Then use compressed air from the outside and the majority of dust will come out. Then maybe open it up once every few years to check it internally.

Set the torque limiter on your power driver to a 1 or a 2 when retitening the housing screws.

It's worth noting that your drill (and most drills) have a torque setting. There is an arrow at the base of the chuck pointing to some numbers and a drill bit icon. You turn the base of the chuck to adjust the max torque the drill can apply. By turning the torque down, you can reduce the risk of overtightening.

I don’t get why you slide the screen out. It’ll just drop out once you take the damper face off. Easier to put the face plate back on if you put the machine on its side.

These videos are very helpful, although I doubt I will use a power tool as that requires a little bit of skill and might cause more trouble than it's worth. A phillips head screw driver is probably enough. C2 recommends cleaning the flywheel every 250 hours of usage, so unless this is in a gym you really don't need to do this every 6 months. I acquired mine in April 2020 and despite a lot of use is only at 200 hours so will probably have to finally clean it this way at the end of the year. If the DF is still holding firm it's probably still clean enough to use.

He is using the tool improperly (or possibly the wrong tool), which makes it look like it needs skill and could cause trouble, when it could actually be easier and more precise. Does the same thing in the prior video when he talks about using a handheld screwdriver. Notice how he calls it a drill? The right power tool here is a combination drill/driver. The difference is the limit setting option (just a big ring on the front, very intuitive) that you can turn to guarantee it won't overtighten. You can set it in increments from loose or finger-tight all the way to the drill setting (where there is no limit and it just goes hard whenever you pull the trigger). Lots of people strip screws by hand, but a properly set drill/driver will give you the torque precision he's trying to achieve here without ever having to think about it (just turn the ring to, say, "2," or whatever it is on your particular drill/driver, and hit each screw). The weirdest thing about this is that cordless drill/drivers are waay more common than drills without this feature. Maybe it is and he just doesn't know how to use it (no judgement, it's a rowing channel, not a home improvement show). Or maybe it's something he got as a promo somewhere (Ryobi sponsors lots of KZfaqrs, and he manages to mention the brand twice). Or maybe he just does it by hand because he knows these machines intimately and can do it by feel. But doesn't have to.

Hi Shane or anyone else, I read a comment on the c2 forum that you need to be careful about not disturbing flywheel weights or you may have to replace the whole flywheel as it gets unbalanced. are these weights only visible when you further tear it down, or is this something to be careful about in the cleaning procedure shown here? I got a used C2 which seems clean but the drag is

When not in use, wouldn't it be good to cover the flywheel cage when not in use to keep from dust and pet hair from accumulating? Vacuum put against the open vent? Thank you.

Any specific reason not to just take the flywheel off and wash it down vs leaving it on and individually wiping each blade? (Coming from someone who has not yet taken one of these apart... so bear with me) :-)
@DarkHorseRowing

These machines definitely don't like water so it's more out of protection for the machine. They're also balanced flywheels so anything that might mess with the appropriate balance is a no go.
