Where every person in the vicinity of the open hood is running the same 3 thoughts thoughts though their heads 1. How could this have happened 2. What could be damaged and how badly 3. Is this fixable? How much work is this going to be. Its a horrible feeling.

Internal radiator failure when coolant and atf mixes. Very popular on early 2000's nissan/ infiniti It'll need a Trans, radiator, complete cooling system flush, thermostats, etc. Not fun

I want y’all to know I spent 34 years knowing NOTHING about cars except changing tires and air filters. Recently got my dream car (‘05 Honda Element. Don’t ask lol) and decided to use the opportunity to learn my own car maintenance. There’s some stuff I won’t do, but channels like yours give me amazing info. How to associate a sound with a problem. How you diagnose an issue based on a vague customer statement. Where to source quality parts, how to know if your mechanic is fair and honest. You’ve given me the confidence to wrench on things I wouldn’t have touched a few years ago, and it’s saved me over $1000 in labor so far and my E is doing great! Time for a valve adjustment on the V-tech though, and I’m not brave enough to open the block yet so I’m taking it to a local element expert here in the PNW. Your team is amazing!

I work for a parts house and we were getting bad radiators that fit GM vehicles. You were lucky, the one instance we had was the antifreeze pumped into the transmission and destroyed the transmission. Cool channel, just found you guys. Best of luck in everything.

I had the radiator blow up like that in my Tundra. Big old strawberry milkshake. They flushed my transmission and coolant system multiple times. The engine works fine but the transmission shifts hard. My radiator was factory Toyota.
@usdmsilvia8 ай бұрын
Not only have I seen this, I had to diagnose it for a friend. It happened maybe 7 yrs ago in a ek civic. Car ran fine but once thermostat opened the trans would slip. Checked the trans dip stick and seen strawberry quick. Told him the rad had an internal break on the trans cooler side and needed to be replaced and trans flushed with new fluid added. Luckily it never had issues with cooling.
@shane33508 ай бұрын
I've seen this once or twice at the shop I used to work at. Chrysler has a similar problem with the oil cooler on the v6 models. It sits in the valley under the I take manifold and is often misdiagnosed as a headgasket.
@JDMjunkyard8 ай бұрын
the pathfinders/xterras had the same issue with the integrated radiator/trans cooler. also those megan race ramps are the best! especially for getting slammed cars on a lift
@Rikadyn6 ай бұрын
Yea it's pretty common on Nissan automatics with the integrated cooler.
@vcmdpropulsion1268 ай бұрын
i seen it quite a few times. mostly on the older 90s chevy blazers, the cooler inside breaks and the psi of the cooling lines is higher then the psi of the radiator . so its always getting trans fluid.

@NeighborsAteMyZombies8 ай бұрын
That shits such a pain in the ass too. My 04 grand cherokee did this maybe 3(?) years ago and I still get little clumps of strawberry milkshake when I flush the system 😂😂 gunked up the water pump too. You had the right idea sticking the hose into the block but I can almost promise that didn't get it all out the coolant passages 😅

This was a thing on some of the M112/M113 (and honestly, a lot more engines) Mercedes cars back in the day, pointedly the ones that were sporting a Valeo-brand radiator with the integrated auto trans cooler. Exactly as was quickly called out here, the internal seals fail and you have oils going where oils shouldn't, low-viscosity fluids going where low-viscosity fluids shouldn't, or both if you're very unlucky. Best case scenario, new radiator/cooler unit needed. Worst case, transmission also needed.

This just happened to an acura TL type s i was working on. Trans cooler blew internally mixing coolant and trans fluid surprisingly engine oil was clean. 15 gallons of trans fluid later trans fluid is clean but the coolant still shows gunked oil, regardless of the hours spent flushing it. New Thermostat Hoses Radiator and full send.

A few dishwasher tablets crushed up and run through the system will breakdown the trans fluid. You'll have to do it several times til it runs clear. Had to do the same on my VW caddy van after oil cooler failed and filled the coolant with engine oil.

Older nissan Frontiers had this issue trans cooler was internal to the radiator and would fail and mix. Fried the valve body.
@rubenbarrientos58006 ай бұрын
I have seen it, there is a recall on the Xterra that Nissan have sent out to the dealership,replace the radiator because the lines of the transmission connect to the radiator and if the radiator goes bad then you will have to replace the radiator and the transmission too. That happened to my uncles Xterra, I told him to replace the radiator but his mechanic said everything looks good the radiator is fine five years later bam there it goes the internals of the radiator goes bad then the water and transmission fluid starts to mixing in and you can’t dive it again
@colebarone18316 ай бұрын

Inside the rad the two can mix if the tank cracks inside. Transmission cooler lines connect to the radiator. Unless you add a separate cooler for the transmission
@fastinradfordable4 ай бұрын
Any serious car owner should bypass the trans heat exchanger in the radiator. And run an external cooler. The last thing an engine needs going up a mountain is a bunch of heat from the transmission visa versa

Interesting you’ve never seen this on a vehicle before and more specifically another Nissan… Good ole SMOD on the Nissan rad. Pathfinders and xterras are known to have this problem. Rad bypass and inline trans cooler fixes it. There’s a thin strip of metal that seperates the coolant from the trans. As the rad heats and cools the strip expands and shrinks eventually tearing itself and causing the mixture. Rad replacement and fluid flushed would’ve fixed the problem. No point in messing with the broken radiator
