This works... I learned it first from my parents on the farm... When grapes, or any fruit really, has a very good year and produce more than the usual harvest, Mom would can those fruits in jams or jellies without any storebought preservatives in them. The only thing you have to watch is the pectin required to make jams. You will need to use pectin enzymes to solve this potential problem... Other than this, work it like you would any other wine...

You could use someone to run the camera. I really like your videos. Great content, nicely presented and informative. I would never have thought of using grape jam! I do have a batch of grape mead going currently and is almost ready for bottling. Picked the 30lbs of grapes myself. Thanks for posting your great grape jam wine recipe! I gotta try that next

I just started this, it seemed like a good hobby to take up lol. I did a batch on 11/14/23 of 3 lbs of honey, 28 oz of frozen strawberries and 2 lbs of frozen black cherry’s. I pitched my bread yeast while dissolving 2 1/2 lbs of sugar and a 12 oz bottle of strawberry syrup. Wow my airlock is going like crazy. My starting OG was 1.068%. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. Thank you for all your helpful vids. I’m disabled so I have a tight shoe strings budget. Lol. Trying not to break it.

I wanted to make elderberry wine, but wasn't able to gather them this summer. Charles, I think you just gave me a method to get that project started. Thanks!

I think since they add pectin to the jam, the addition of some pectic enzyme would really help this wine.

@@DIYFermentation The peel of the papaya fruit has natural pectic enzyme. You can use 1/2 of the peel of one papaya to replace 1 tsp. of enzyme. Just add it into the must for fermenting and place the rest in a freezer bag for reuse later.

I assumed you would just sprinkle the yeast on top of the jam and it actually makes me curious of how that would turn out.

Interesting idea, do you expect the result to be very similar to the regular concord grape juice from the plastic jugs at the grocery store? I wonder if the concentration of the grape jam with water added is about the same as the juice. Mostly curious about this because stocking up on some jam could have an even longer shelf life and take up much storage less space. Not sure on the cost comparison though.
@DIYFermentation

Should be about the same. The additional sugar addition ended up being about the same.

It also looks like most of the cheaper jams in the store have HFCS, which we know is not the best form of dietary sugar, but I guess in this case since it all ferments out (assuming complete fermentation) then it's not much of a concern...

boil less water to not have to wait as long for it to cool down, use the leftover water to cool it back down
@DIYFermentation
@DIYFermentation 8 ай бұрын
As shown in the video only 1/2 of the water was used initially. I had plenty of time to let it cool down or else I would have used a cold water bath to cool it quicker.

Did you happen to get a hydrometer reading? I admit that I generally forget to take one.
@DIYFermentation
@DIYFermentation 8 ай бұрын
This one contained a mistake that I corrected with editing rather than making a new batch. 3 cups of sugar were used instead of 2. the hydrometer reading was 1.150 after removing 2 cups and adding 2 cups of water.

u should strongly point out that hydrometer let's us know if it stalled

I have only had one wine (Lemon wine) that ever stalled, of the two hundred plus wines\meads that i've done on this channel. This one has a very vigorous fermentation (Shoulda left more headspace).

... I can kinda see the appeal of using grape jam - it'd simplify a whole lot of things - but for the life of me I can't imagine why you wouldn't just use grapes if you wanted grape wine.
