You find the tutorial video here: • How to build a helix f...
This video shows the construction of the first Helix on the layout in a time-lapse. The helix is constructed to get the trains 18 cm up. The helix is approx 1.4 m wide.
I use a hexagonal approximation instead of a round one.
The construction time was around 14 h.

I actually like the threaded rod idea. Seems that you can adjust thing a little while building the helix. Thanks for sharing this.

This is brilliant way of doing a helix. I also love the fact that you have two sets of tracks for usage.

Great job. I wasted a lot of wood cutting half and quarter circles and ended up with a pile of strange shaped off cuts making my helix. Great idea to make it the way you did.

Using straight cuts to form the hexagon appears to be a more efficient use of plywood than cutting circles out of a sheet.

Jerry Smith First of all it seems to be a way more time-consuming method.

I think it will be less time consuming and a more efficient use of materials. The 4x8 sheet of plywood is cut into strips which then are cut into segments. the angle of those cuts allows the segments to be reassembled into the hexagon. I suppose angles could be matched to form a octagon, but that would take more time. It seems to me cutting circular sections will always leave a lot of pieces trimmed from edges of the 4x8 and curved cuts are more difficult to make than straight cuts.

A step by step would be nice. The ability to adjust the helix is a great idea. Im taking bits and pieces from a lot of videos before I begin my own THANK YOU

Am I the only one that noticed this looks like it being built in a WWII bunker? Looks great and you'll be able to railroad during an apocalyptic event!

Unfourtenately not. The room is located on a old factory. Which used to make wool. I will show some picture in the next layout update.

Hi I’m gonna build my helix following your method. Easier to cut straight lines and less wastage. Can I just ask you what thickness of plywood you used? Thanks.

Hey there, a bit late with this, but maybe you can place a LED strip at the 'roof' of platform above that train rail. So you have a lighted railway

PolybosStudio Do you think is an error to build a helix with R1 and R2? Or is that asking for trouble?
@TheTrainroom
@TheTrainroom 6 жыл бұрын
R1 is asking for trouble. It will be very steep. Download the Excel from comments and try out how steep it will be. Also some thirdparty product will not run on it.

Who I did't. The picnic table is anyway now gone, because they are building a road there, but no clue what it is for.

Good job,,!?,, why didn't, you use a router, or lam., trimmer, with a swing arm ??,,, you opened yourself up, to a ton of work, I find it easier, to rout, 1/4" ply, in circles!!!
@TheTrainroom
@TheTrainroom 6 жыл бұрын
I don't have enough storage place to store larger machinery, plus all the budget goes into build materials. I might see if I can lend better equipment for the next helix which three times as high.

lots of unnecessary work in the video. just cut strips f 1/8 or thinner. wall fiber board, it is just a step better than card board. exact name? but cut the strips about 3/4 wide. then placing your single track supports or double supports for more than one full loop. threaded rod works great here to adjust the grade to keep it the same all the way. but then using glue some screws and lots of C clamps start bending as per the curve, easy as long as you keep the radius about 34 inches. and all track supports can be made this way. city's, yards can just use good old plywood. or sound deadening ? stuff. all curves can be made gradual not snap track sudden. can even hand lay the rail on this under support.
