The Continental Grand Prix 5000 S is towards the top of many cyclists' lists for being the best road bike tire. It's one of the fastest (if not THE fastest) tires I've ever ridden, it's supremely supple and comfortable, flat resistant, and confidence inspiring in the corners. Yes, the GP 5000's live up to the hype, but I will probably never buy them again.

Long time GP5k owner. Like every conti tire if you skid on them they tend to wear out quickly. Out of all the tires I've used Continental tire leave the most prominent skid marks. You'll also find that your rear tire becomes less round the more you skid. Even if you don't skid that much. I've had to change my riding style to never skid because I like GP5ks but I can't justify buying them so often. In pursuit of speed, handling and comfort I've committed to no skids (unless I'm about to die of course)

The STR is a weapon of a race tire. Light, fast rolling, grippy, aero tread tech. Really starts to shine over 22mph. Happy to buy a fresh set every season. At $150 it’s a great value. That’s one date night w wifey. To run a set of race tires on a commuter at slow speed and skidding is very fixed gear if you +5 FixiePoints

On a racing road bike with brakes and tarmac only riding (for which gp500 are designed) you can easily do 4000 miles on back and 6000 miles on front and this is rather worst case scenario for heavy riders and poor tarmac. But indeed even one emergency breaking from 30mph with wheel locked can substantially wear up the rubber. And even one unlucky mile on gravel or sharp stones can permanently damage it. It is NOT a commuter or gravel tire and definitely not designed for fixed gear and skiding.

I have GP5k on two of my bikes and each one is well over 1000 miles. I live in the land of Goat Head and trash on the road, GP5k have been the best tire for me over the years. I have 10 K miles per year over the past 10 years and would support GP5k. I do like your channel Zach!

I do tight little circles in cul-de-sac with them. They're amazing for this. It creates like this artificial downhill but you're going around in a circle. The grip is amazing it makes you feel like you're accelerating. And with the 32s you can dive into the corners recklessly😂

I had these tires and really like them too, I just went to some Panaracer types because they had 26mm and 28mm was too fat for my fork on my current bike. Wouldn't count them out though, I also use some car tire shine on them to keep them fresh.

I don’t skid, nor have they been off road, but I still have the same Continental Grand Prix 4 season tires on my 2019 Wabi Classic. It’s not my only bike, but still has to have at least 2k miles on ‘em.

I rode the GP 5000 and I had more punctures than it could save me time over its lifetime. Now I am running top tier touring tires like the Contact Urban and 2016 Schwalbe Marathon Supreme. They have 2(!) times the puncture resistance of the GP 5000 and I have not had a single puncture since switching. The GP 5000 gave me a puncture every 400-500 km on average.

Vittoria worth a try? Rubino on the rear (a bit better wearing) Corsa on the front (for more grip and better rolling), with TPU tubes. It's still challenging finding an acceptable trade-off price/comfort/grip/durability wise. And You still pay a substantial mark-up for road tubeless tyres over the tubed equivalent. And ride/rolling resistance is pretty close now with TPU tubes in good quality tyres (IMO). Like you I'm done with Conti as they've never quite lived up to the hype.

It's hard going back to lesser rubber when you've ridden the best. Agree with Zach: these are fast wearing tires. I ride the clincher version--too cheap to upgrade my wheels--and I was surprised by how much more quickly they wear compared to the GP4000's.

I do have a gravel bike, which I also use occasionally as a road bike with a 2nd wheelset, while the bigger and sturdier wheelset with 35mm gravel tires is my setup for daily use. For that purpose, they are perfect for me due and they last way longer than 1000 miles. For daily use, the GP5000 are not recommendable, I totally agree.

Your experience with tire durability mirrors what I see with other low rolling resistance tires ~1000 miles on the rear, ~2000 miles on the front. The other thing I've noticed is that if i didn't look at the tread, I would have never noticed. The performance has been great. Currently getting ready to replace a set of Pirelli Cinturato H because the rear has gone completely bald. I would go to Schwalbe Marathons, but I've heard the ride quality is not that great. If someone made a tire that hit the first 4/5 of your talking points, I would gladly ignore the price.

if my wheels support both clincher and tubeless tires (fulcrum racing 3 db - 2wayfit), but i want to run with tubes, is there any reason to buy the more expensive S TR as opposed to the regular gp5000?
@manueldeubler1127
@manueldeubler1127 2 ай бұрын
No. The STR are supposedly the better tires (better compound, traction, bla bla bla) but the tube type tires are really good and much lighter because they don't need hold the air on their own.

Without reading all the comments, that’s pretty much my main road tire and on a gear bike that is my fixed gear has Perelli’sS. But I must say on point they are fast. There’s less wattage output for the speed you gain only reason I have not installed them on my fixed gear is because I’m still kind of experimenting with puncture resistance otherwise I put them on. they’re always the gold standard the benchmark standard tire that pretty much all the reviews Rate their tires against……………

Plain Conti GP here - not as supple as 5K due to simpler poly-x breaker under same compound. I believe this is proper daily cyclist's choice. I even have a set of discontinued GP GT with full three plies in casing and wider breaker strip, those were faster version of gatorskins,

No flats in two years, about 2k miles. Great grip, low rolling resistance. An amazing tire BUT the sidewalls are paper. First year, my rear had threads sticking out of the sides and getting swolen in said area. Changed it. This year, just last night, I noticed a half inch cut on my front, the grip area fine, the sidewall side of the cut revealing threads. I think I'm switching brands now. Too expensive to buy the "best".

I’ve rode six thousand miles in the last twelve months including an end to end of Britain. I swear by continental gatorskins. I swop front to rear so they both need replacing simultaneously. Four thousand miles no punctures. Not one to push my luck I’ve ordered two more 700 25c’s available in the uk for as little as £38 each. Wabis look great, our top end equivalent would be a Temple.

To all y’all who get 1000 or more miles on your GP’s good for yall, zach is running a heavy gear, If you ever pedal a heavy gear bike and hear your tires scrubbing the road, That’s why his didn’t last that long. Yes y’all are more careful and probably running gears on your bike, I know I would too paying for 89$ per tire i’d go easy gear from a dead stop, But going how Zach rides where almost every pedal stroke you can hear his tires scraping the road like sand paper, I’m not surprised that his tires did not last. That’s my gripe with GP 5’s. Had the pleasure of riding a Vittoria corsa pro which did not last with my heavy ass, plus it was used and also a Pirelli PZero, Honestly, I’d rank the GP 5’s below those two. Imo.

Ridiculous review. I've been running GP5Ks for years on several bikes. They are great. Also, if you're paying full US retail for these you're not trying. For example: I bought a set of GP5KSTRs for one bike last year when they went on sale for $50. I have about 3k miles on them and they're still absolutely fine. I use them as intended: on the road on a bike with brakes. 🤷‍♀️
