This video is an update on the cat grass from my previous video hydroponic catgrass here. I cut the cat grass down multiple times and it seems like we maybe able to grow it this way continuously for the long term. I have now cut it back four times and it seems that it is still doing very well so I think it will be able to be a long term grow this way . Just add fluid each time you cut. I did use 1 teaspoon of Maxi Gro per gallon of water. I grew this in one of my hydroponic planters that I sell in a kit of two. I also have a video showing how to make the hydroponic planter yourself. I give the links below.

Thank you so much for this! I could not find info on how to keep cat grass alive for the past 6 months and assumed it just must not be possible- but I was so stubborn to accept that because as someone with a green thumb, I’m constantly getting plants to keep regrowing and living on and on. This is perfect, can’t wait to have an ongoing lil cat grass set up for my cat now that there’s a sustainable, easy way to do it!

You're welcome. It does well I have had it going for at least 4 cycles and believe it could go on longer. The cat did love it.

I was told it would only last a few weeks before dying off but I've got plants that have survived almost a year at this point, ironically the biggest threat other than full sun seems to be the cats themselves demolishing the thing, got some of them to grow to seed too but not exactly sure why only some seeded for me

Thank you for putting the effort into this video and the info. I like the foil idea. I would use a second container and put the whole thing in side that one so the foil is layered in between. Better yet get a second container and paint it. Only thing is that the new sprouts have better nutritional value than older shoots. The stalks are getting tougher and tougher as they grow.

You're welcome. Yes, a painted outer container would be great.

@@CharestStudios Yeah I think I will do this and not just a large planter with dirt. I will have that one in the kitchen and a food container one like yours in my room. I will spray paint the second outer contain completely inside and out. Rustoleum has a spray paint that is made for plastic and is uv resistant plus uv protectant, meaning it won't let light (the UV part of the light that helps algae grow) pass through. There are several, but the one that is made for plastic patio furniture will do the trick. Silver I think, so that it will reflect light.

@@CharestStudios I just wanna say thanks again. This video is like many other but you added/included the ability to have a continuous source of grass. Even tho, as i have already point out that, new sprouts are more tender and have more nutritional value, that does not mean the older stocks are not nutritious and are still a great source. This video adds the great foil and container use. Gives me ideas to further implement.

That was a surprise ending to your video. I honestly was expecting to hear that it began to die after three or four trimmings, because that has been my experience. I would love to hear how long yours has grown for. My experience thus far having done it 15 to 20 times over the years is, it looks great prior to cutting it back like you did, then it grows again, and looks good and healthy, then I cut it back again, like you did, and then the third time it’s beginning to not look so great but it’s still fine. Then I cut it back again, and then it’s clearly beginning to die and that’s where I’m at with my latest batch for my cat. It is extremely frustrating because as easy as it is to grow it’s still a pain in the butt to plant new seeds every week or two. Lol. The only thing I’ve done differently than you is I have always grown mine in soil. If you or anyone else reads this comment and has any suggestions for what I might be doing wrong or if other people are having the same experience as I am please let me know either way. If there is a way to have it, keep growing over and over and over that would be awesome. Thank you.

That first cutting is plenty for a nice juice shot. When you cut, it doesn't taste as good when it grows back imho. I guess cats don't mind the change of flavor. Fresh grass does have a nice sweet flavor, almost honey-like. Very cool. I should probably grow some again, it's been a while. Like smashed.
@CharestStudios
@CharestStudios 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. That's good to know. I may try the wheatgrass when I decide to freshen up this batch. It's still going but it did seem healthier in the beginning so I can see why that first grow is best for juice. I figured because it had all the nutrients it would be just as good every time.

That chemical change is the grasses defense. Next time you cut grass if you notice that cut grass smell is bitter it tells all the other grass around it it’s getting eaten or damaged so turn bitter to defend yourself.

I’m trying to do this at home myself. I bought some Miracle Gro Organic concentrated fertilizer and I’ve bought some epsom salts to add to this. Hopefully this should work okay. Does it need to be in a clear container? I was just gonna try putting it in a plant pot.
@CharestStudios
@CharestStudios 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Luke. Yes, you can do it easily in a pot with potting mix or hydroponically. I think the fertilizer you have is best suited for soil so you would probably be best doing it that way. However Catgrass will grow short term with no nutrients. For hydroponics it would be best to have the container light proof for cat grass because it has a longer grow time that regular micros. I use 1 teaspoon of Maxi Gro hydroponic solution for mine.

@@CharestStudios So how long have you been able to keep this growing? I would like to start some wheat grass for my cat but the kits are ridiculously expensive and only last a couple of weeks. Been searching KZfaq for a better alternative and found you video. Thank you.
@EssentialParadox

@@CharestStudios I did the best I could but my cat grass seems to have only lasted a couple of weeks. I didn’t realize my fertilizer was specific to soil so I think I will try the hydroponic one you recommended! I also wonder if I had too much water in mine and drowned the roots… although it didn’t look like you had any issues with that.

@@EssentialParadox I think you will have good result with the MaxiGro nutrients. As far as the water level I started with it almost full, about a quarter inch from the screen and it would go down below half sometimes before I filled it up again to the original level.

@CharestStudios
@CharestStudios 5 ай бұрын
Hello. Yes, I will try to explain. I do have a video on how to make the planter here. Just use the deep one quart container instead of the shallow one in the video. You will need to get some plastic window screen or nylon material to go on the planter. You will need Maxi Gro nutrient powder and add one teaspoon per gallon of water. You need some wheat berries. I recommend hard red wheat berries. I think the video explains the growing process. Let me know if you have any other questions but I think that covers it pretty well.

Hi John. You really do need the nutrient. You might be able to grow some wheatgrass short term in or on a cat fountain somehow. Cats love grass so it would be a cool idea.
