Typical example of what happens when upgraded hardware models are released. Developers target the higher spec and only nominally make the game run on the base model. It's like the "Minimum Specs" for PC games.

This screams to me a game that was designed with next gen in mind. Like, I expect when you plug this into PS5 it will automatically run at a higher resolution, with raytracing, better performance, and fast load times.

This is why I love this channel. I like how they break down stuff like this in games!

How did they think this is okay to release in this state??? Surely they had to play it on all platforms before release. Did they not even test it on base consoles?

They didn't even show the off the full extent of the slow down on base PS4. Almost every battle when particle effects go absolutely insane the game turns into a slide show. It was bad enough that in the atrium level the game actually froze while facing 3 bad guys for about 8 seconds, and when it resumed the bad guys were completely gone. My theory is that when it overloaded it despawned the bad guys just so that the game could resume. And slowdowns are common, even through the early game. Any attack that throws massive amounts of particles *cough*grenadedudes*cough* turns the game into a powerpoint presentation. The oddest part is even though my console is pretty old and usually I can tell when a game is processor intensive when the machine itself chugs and makes lots of noise it's damn near silent for this game. Just makes me think something fucky is going on.

I've seen countless reviews on YT and hardly any of the reviewers touched on how bad the performance actually is in this game. Hats off to DF. What would we do without you guys.

What a world we live in where a game has to drop to 10 fps before it's considered "borderline unplayable". Any drops below 30 should not be tolerated and Microsoft and Sony should not have allowed this to release. What the hell are console certification processes for if they let ridiculous performance problems like this through?

I'm playing on my OG Xbox One (2013) and the game really has a weird behavior. Thank you guys for pointing that video freezing bug at 21:33. When it happened to me, I was shocked that they released the game with that kind of issue. In-game performance issues are (unfortunately) common when a game launches, but things like me map / and pause screen stutters are bizarre. I hope Remedy address this ASAP. I'm such a fan of their work and it's sad that it was launched at that state. BTW, great job, guys! DF never disappoints!

My god this is bad. I think this generation established that if you choose to target 30fps over 60fps it at least should be rock solid. I can forgive one or two dropped frames here and there. But drops this low make it unplayable

This looks like one of those games that's really gonna come into its own when it's remastered for the next gen platforms - on PS5 and XB2 it's likely to get the raytracing tech from the PC version, and they should be able to swing non-reconstructed 4K at 30 fps, or even 1440p at 60 fps.

Hi DF guys, would you guys ever consider doing a video on options devs could be implementing to future proof games (via backwards compatibility on next gen)? Things like having options for adaptive resolution and unlocking framerates etc.

Remedy is working on fixes for the consoles. Should have a patch by "Mid or late September". Should have been fixed before release but hopefully it'll improve performance.

I'm having more issue with texture pop-in, but I have it installed on an external. I might try to reinstall it on the internal and see if that's any better.

when you got to base ps4 i could barely watch the video, can't even imagine playing it. its a damn shame cause the game looks great and the total lack of marketing makes me think its gonna flop, but there's no way in hell im buying this at full price when it runs so bad.

I love this game but the performance is the worst i’ve ever seen on my ps4

21:40 I experienced a similar FMV freeze on the PS4 Pro, when playing it back from the pause menu. I also had an instance where the video stopped and I could Jesse standing in the room I had paused in, and the audio from the video was still playing. I hit the triangle button and it brought up the playback controls, and the video came back and played out normally like nothing had happened.

John, do you know if Remedy ever fixed the issues you covered in Quantum Break's post XB1X patch? I reinstalled it recently, but to my eyes it seemed to have the same problems.

I’m playing on One X, and frame-rate is flatlining as soon as there’s a lot of action on screen. Anything more than three enemies at a time, and it’s stuttering constantly. Additionally, literally every time I load ally save, or use a control point for any purpose, there’s significant stutter upon re-entering the game.

I've installed this game on my SSD - Xbox One X Version... I'm ok with that, it's a good port (confirmed here), but, still, the "menu slowdown" happens even there - however, the bug vanish quicker. Good video, DF. Thanks.

Which version was tested? 1.02 has "performance improvements". I'd love to know whether this patch was taken into account.

After seeing the destruction in this game I was thinking how "ironic" it would be if WB contracted Remedy to make a Matrix game haha Technically it would be the closest to getting a new Remedy Max Payne game we would get haha

I really like the grainy look of Quantum Break and Control. I didn't have much problem on the X.

Most of the time I agree with y'all's assessment but falling into the low teens disqualifies a game from being called "good" on a platform IMO. This is an avoid on base PS4/Xbox One.

I'm playing on Xbox One S and I noticed the slow down and frame rate dipping when there's a lot of particle effects or a lot of action on screen and it is unplayable when the frame rate drops so low I'm stuck on the first boss because the framerate just crashes. I just hope they can get this right on console and if they can't give us a refund for the game.

Games now a days... when i was a kid i remember my 4 yr old mind being blown when my father showed me some of his atari games. I grew up in snes/n64 era, but thats one of the 1st memories i have. In just 20 yrs weve gone from sprites/super rough polygons that are either unshaded and flat, or just colored/hardly textured to this. And every yr the bar gets set higher and higher.

Remember the days when games had slightly different versions to accommodate performance on different consoles? Splinter Cell Chaos Theory for example.

Hey DG, I don't know if I am mistaken or you guys are but on the 15:55 mark this game footage says Xbox one X but when you see the buttons you need to push on the screen it shows PS4 button, the triangle one, so I don't know what's going on there.

Wait... John, you can't show what you show and then conclude that the game is "solid enough on consoles" or "it's good on consoles". It's unplayable on two of the four and has issues on the other two. Careful with your phrasing there, friend.

No mention of the slow loading textures especially on posters and signs? This was an issue with quantum break as well. Exiting the pause menu creating fps issues is so weird. I hope they patch these stuff

This is one of THE most impressive games on current-gen, and it can really only be appreciated in action. The destructibility is amazing. The effects work is incredible. Some frame rate hiccups on PS4 didn't hinder my enjoyment. It's one of the few games that gave me that "Half-Life 2" feeling - a feeling of connectedness to the game world. A new level of interaction, driven by physics systems. And it's just deliciously weird.

Was cool playing something with such heavy Finnish influences. I know Sam Lake is Finnish but the last 3 games weren't borrowing from the Kalevala. Finnish Objects of Power are where Tolkien got the idea for the ruling ring in Lord of the Rings and the Silmarils in The Silmarillion. The Black Arrow of Bard the Bowman, the Phial of Galadriel, Orcrist, Glamdring, Sting, the staffs of the Wizards. etc.

Good God, I'm glad I didn't get this for my PS4. I'm running it on an i5 4460 & RX 480 4GB and it's working pretty darn well at mostly high settings at 1080P. It does drop below 60 at times, but luckily I have a Freesync monitor which really comes in handy & makes me not notice the dips as much. Though, I will say, when there's big explosions and all, I do notice. And it also really heats up my graphics card, hitting the high 80s Celsius.

I have game breaking bug with this game with latest Nvidia drivers, both DX11 and DX12 versions. After five or so minutes graphics glitch and start to spam the screen with this expanding black square that eats the screen estate and renders game black, making it unplayable. Sometimes loading previous save works but usually only restart foxes this, and it occurs every play session. There hasn't been help on Remedys forums or Reddit so far :/

were these tests done with the stock HDD or upgraded systems?

On ps4 ( base ) I drop it to about 10 frames sometimes. It hit me hard when I did the random pop up missions and it took me to a small room with alot of destruction. when the action picked up with about 5 different enemy types I could bare even move ..... but I still love this game haha

Yet another masterpiece from one of the greatest developers in existence. Loving this game and super excited to see the possibilities it brings for Alan Wake and/or Quantum Break sequels.

I was waiting for this video before I made a decision on purchasing the game. Damn the performance is harsh. Hopefully they can fix some of this with some patches along the way. Now I'm torn, do I just get it on PS4 Pro now or wait to play it on PS5? Would there be a difference in performance on PS5 playing this in backwards compatible mode? Do you think they have been working on a Control Remastered edition to come out after the PS5 releases? Maybe true 4K and 60fps? Perhaps even some RTX? I really want to play this game though, but I'm not sure if I should just sit back and wait instead.

You mention I/O possibly being a point for bottleneck, but failed to mention the assest streaming issues. Look at the textures of the painting and posters on the walls, they are VERY slow to load in high res (playing on one x btw, tested on both external and internal storage)

As games become more and more GPU heavy due the end of the generation, do you think it'd be interesting to do a FPS test in some recent games using the OG Xbox One vs the Xbox One S ? It apears that some games can have a considerable diference, like KH3. I'd like to see the difference in games like Battlefield V, the new F1, RDR2. (The last one for exemple, It apears to have more FPS on the One S version than the standard PS4 on some areas, while the OG One strugles.) Thanks!

Xbox One X running this at 1440p is INSANELY impressive. Even my GTX 1070 PC struggles at 1080p

Tearing at the top of the screen on the X1 could likely be because they're using that technique of not using v-sync and instead use various techniques to push the tear out of view. This method usually suffers when the framerate dives far below the target.

I might be out there but one thing I think about is that the Flash Light from Alan Wake was an Oop(Object of power) I mean when the light focused it would weaken the dark aura around the people and machines.

I love literally everything about this game, but its performance on my base PS4 is atrocious. There were so many frame rate drops and pop-ins, it's mind boggling. This is completely unacceptable for a single player game in 2019.

Could you PLEASE upload the PC analysis in 4K?! With all that action on screen and KZfaq's horrible bitrate it's hard to find the visuals even remotely stunning or even palatable since everything looks like mush....

Jeez, this was looking really cool until you got to performance. I'm not really a snob when it comes to games dropping frames here and there, but this is totally unacceptable and ridiculous.

on PC if you use the Sharpen option in the Nvidia Game Filter settings, it dramatically imroves sharpness bringing a lot of the details out, its still a little fuzzy but it reduces it quite a lot. In 4k it looks amazing with Ray Tracing.

Is it functional(30 FPS solid) on console now? If so which one is good?
