I was skeptical when you were in the planning stage, but damn, that's nice. To lighten the pop up feature, you could use cedar for timbers. Your choice to use screen for the walls was downright brilliant to cut down on weight. For privacy or to keep it warmer inside, you can attach velcro canvas drop down curtains on the outside...which would also shed rain. Great job guys.
@evanhodgson3901
@evanhodgson3901 Жыл бұрын
You should build a bed that hinges to the wall so it can be lifted up and locked out of the way, and then under the bed you can build some sort of storage that’s accessible when the bed is lifted up. You should also install rubber strips to the bottom edge of the lifting roof so no bugs can work there way in. Would also be cool to have hinged panels to cover the screen that hinges towards the roof, that way if you want the room but also want to keep the cold out in the winter they can be closed but still have height

You need a pulley system with boat wench that will make lifting the roof easier. Kind of like a normal pop up. Also you can use the jacks like a truck camper to make it easier to remove off the trailer. It will alao keep it off the ground.
@DrunkBrainAllTheWay
@DrunkBrainAllTheWay Жыл бұрын
2 tips for the roof system: 1. Use 2 bars on each end, with threads and just roll the roof up. 2. Use 2 gas pistons, like the ones on car trunk, but there are stronger ones for beds. Might be tricky to install them right, but it will be very easy to pop it out and back in. In both solutions you can use the same bolts to lock it in place. When I have the time, I don't have the money for all these ideas and other way around 😂

Man i really like the way it came out! You should paint the wooden floor inside and out so water cant get in and so the wood wont soak up all that water. Also you can line the inside with thin sheet of PVC for durability and its easy to clean hell even paint. For lighting you can buy a set of old school stringed lights to hang around the inside. You and Daryl killed it!

Well done Gents. I am currently building a camper to sit on my 6' x 4' box trailer. Will have Pop top roof to have 6 ft head clearance above floor area. I am 5'10''. I am a welder so all the frame is RHS 25mm x 25mm x 1.6wall. (1'' square tube") Lighter than 2'' x 3'' timber per lineal metre. Will have all the mod cons inside. 12v and 240v power. Lighting will be both. Skylight wfan is 12v. Lounge, table, kitchenette with running water and sink. Microwave. Bar fridge/freezer. I have fitted out many vans over the years and never built a camper for my self. Now retired so plenty of time to do. I willpost for sale. I wouldn't mind building these for others and make a few dollars.

Cool idea. I love the idea of multi use for such a trailer. Carry some simple automotive jack stands. At least three. One to place under the rear so it will not raise up in the front when stepping in the back while unhooked from the tow vehicle. Two more at the rear of the tailgate to level it making it like and entry porch. Being mesh steel this would also help keep inside cleaner by letting dirt come off your shoes or feet before entry. Don;t forget wheel chocks too. ;-) Might want to keep some towels ready to catch the water that gets in around the window. That window is designed to be installed vertically so it can not channel water out through the weep holes as designed. You might be able to add some across the side which is now the bottom but other modification might be necessary. Maybe add a flip down roof to act as a awning over the window to shelter it from rain might be another solution. I imagine it hinging to the roof 's horizontal support at the bottom of the screen. Cables attached to the corners and up to the roof's horizontal frame above the screen would provide support while in use. Also, consider installing a lock operational from both the interior and exterior on the door. I would suggest a deadbolt so you can lock and unlock it from either side and not risk some prankster locking you in from the outside. ;-) Happy camping!

Very cool! I really like the build videos. Add shutters on hinges that can be propped up/open as awnings. This will protect your screens while you're driving, highway speeds could tear it or from snags and tears while driving on trails. And you could let the awnings down at night to keep the ac inside.

Make bunk beds in it, since you got a little family. The kids can get on top secured bunk and you and wifey can have the bottom/floor bunk but put them on the other side so you can sit against the wall and look out the window on the opposite wall. Also would be nice to make the top bunk flip down into the back of the couch.

Wow! That's perfect! That is ideal for just getting up and going and you don't have to go home if you want to start fishing first thing in the morning! I suggest a vent in the peak with a computer case-sized fan for those occasions when you aren't running the a/c. Also, you could use a narrower bed. It doesn't need to be wider than your shoulders are broad. if you just used a roll-up camp matress, you could even put the platform on a hinge and latch it up adainst the side when you are up and around.

Ever since the beginning i thought of a way to use the rear ramp gate in the build. It is too late for the ideal to be conveniently added now, unless you have a welder and some scrap metal. But to bolt pressure treated wood to the top of the ramp and use it for a mini deck that flips down and has legs to hold it horizontal with the trailer like a level platform. You can sit on it, use it for a table, and a place to wipe your feet or take shoes off. But not walking on the part you are using for a table, but you can have mini tables to put out there on the deck, so when you are sitting on the deck the tables are still useable and convenient, like 18 inch high table. The other ideal with it is to have it be a fold down shower stall raised above the ground like in a real camper or house. Same thing, flips down as a level platform. The deck with a shower pan in it folds down, and the walls fold up around the pan, they can be just mainly corrugated plastic, foam board, glue, and hinges. With real foam board(not the paper coated foam board, the real 100% foam board, like owens corning), glued properly to the corrugated plastic, it becomes a composite, strong for the weight. Have enough PVC pipe, or copper pipe filled with water, painted black on the roof and the sun will heat it for you, have the pipes big enough to hold a few showers and just fill it up using garden hose at home. Add a air valve at highest elevation in the pipe system so you can then pressurize the water more by using a hand pump or air compressor, this will give good results for pressure in the shower, all the way until the last drop is used, then you will hear the air. You will start to hear air before it is all gone, but it will have pressure until the last bit of water. Always put water in first until it stops flowing, then pump air into it or else you won't be able to get the water into it, or enough.

AWESOME !!!!! That is one of the best builds I've seen... Neighbor Daryle is a smart man when it comes to Dyi projects.. there's so many things you can do with this.. just think about deer camp.. no setting up a tent, a/c or heat if it's cold out.. you better figure out a leg for each corner for when you unhook it from the truck.. they have them for campers..make sure to seal ever hole possible because a bug will find it and get in if it's there..some shelves on the a/c end to store stuff. A hinged table that will fold out from the big open wall.. in case it's raining you could cook inside or sit a laptop on and work..so many little ideals..

That is so cool! Maybe thinner ply for the walls to lessen the weight,and some insulation in the roof. I was dubious about the way the upper half would work, but it turned out a brilliant idea,well done. Then you drop the canvas down it gives you privacy so you can't see in but it also seals it up more it keeps the air in at night. You could even get some type of Venetian blind or something I just thought the canvas because it would help keep all the cold air in

You could use a router and seat in some plexiglass on the ends that slide so you can enclose it to trap in the cold air. You can also get a small futon instead of an air mattress so you can fold it into a couch to look out the window and it would be easier to eat with wall mounted fold down tables, plus you would gain a little bit of storage underneath the futon.

Put automotive style hatchback struts to help you lift it so it becomes a 1 person job to pop it up. Put an awning on the window side of it. Put another sheet of plywood or some flooring down on the floor so you don't accidentally tare up that floor Put a bolt action style lock on the inside so you can shut yourself in there Put a foam gasket where the roof sets down on the frame. That will get rid of some stress on the the frame and roof from the vibrations. Put a secondary battery system in that charges the battery with your alternator and put an electric heater in there for winter camping Paint the wood the same color so you can't see the manufacturer writings on it Put bunk cots in it Put a flip out table bolted to the side othe the outside of the camper like the guy did on dirt lifestyle's harbor freight offroading trailer Bigger tires. some A/T tires Maybe a better hitch Something to level each corner of the trailer because you can always find a flat spot Keep up the cool vids 😎 👌

Bro Loved it.. So cool to see you do this.. You asked for ideas and I watch a bunch of these builds. I am an avid camper/deer hunter and fisherman. So Here I go.... 1. Finish the insulation floor to ceiling and fill all gaps with foam (then finish off the inside with old school indoor el-cheapo wall paneling. This will truly insulate the whole thing for summer and winter. 2. Vent the front & rear under the peaks w/ el-cheapo wall open/close HVAC vents so U can install heat 4 the winter hunts if U go up North (get a carbon dioxide/fire alarm 4 sure & install). Also if it gets too cold it can vent the air or just add more air flow overall. 3. I feel Coleman style cots would work best 1 on each side of the walls where they can fold up using 1" pipe hanger straps, secure w/ Velcro 4 traveling. If hung right, the legs once folded out will sit on the floor. U & Mrs. have a place & a sleeping bag 4 the girls in between. (Or room for the camera man, that Badge guy or even yes. We will say it, Norm.... 4. U got to go with outdoor carpet for the floor once insulated. Easy to take care of and stain resistant (Lowes by the foot and cut). 5. Definitely need light wood flaps for the screened upper section. I say go with plywood siding that you can prop out if it rains and during the winter will help insulate (just looking out Bro). 6. LED strip lights on the inside upper walls along with a separate panel on the exterior (both controlled separately). 7. Install a mini fridge under the A/C unit. U will need a rack at the front of the trailer to the left and right of the AC unit to accommodate power. I suggest the WEN 56235i Super Quiet 2350-Watt Portable Inverter Generator and say a large Jackery 2000 Pro). This gives you solar power with the Jackery and gas with the Wen. WEN is unstoppable and you can run on propane also. I have more but tired, hit me up later. E

@Lojo couple ideas, dont forget to seal it fully and the roof. Also for the screen area you can put velcro ontop of the screen one you staple to the screen on the inside; then cut a brown tarp to size and use adhesive to tack it to the tarp that way u have some privacy. Also you could use plexy glass and use butterfly screw clips to keep them closed that way the roof can stay high and the air can stay on. Also i love the idea of a box on the front under the air conditioner for ur generator, just watch ur air conditioner doesnt leak/drain into it. You can always use paneling to finish the inside or just paint what u can. Also look into LED strips for lighting, that way u arent going thru batteries like crazy and its far less consumption on ur generator, also make a spot for ur generator solar panels on the roof. Dont forget to put a lock on the inside to keep the door shut while you sleep. Its going to be great and u can always use it as a deer blind if u rolled the screen or did the velcro option on that too. Just some ideas but its amazing and turned out great.

Great vid Lojo. The camper turned out awesome. I would think about insulating the inside of the roof. That will keep you cooler and quiet any rain noise. I know metal roofs can be noisy. I loved seeing the family involved. I have two daughters myself. They are truly amazing. Mine are both off at college now, so enjoy every minute you can with them. It will be over before you know it.

That is a great video. It must have been so much fun to see the start and then the final great "little house." A word about safety; do not locate the generator too close to the A/C unit. Here in Florida we have occasion to use generators when the power is out after hurricanes. The fumes, CO2, will be sucked into the A/C and it is not filtered out. That gas will kill you. It will overcome you before you notice and you will not be able to save yourself. Get a CO2 detector. HD has tons of them. Great family you have. It must be such a feeling of accomplishment to watch those two grow.

I think we can all agree we love Neighbor Darrell, he is a great addition to the channel. The only suggestions I could make would be to forego the pop up ability and sacrifice a little aerodynamics. (However are you going to travel long distances at high speeds?) Then you could put longer sliding windows in both sides and use it as a portable ground blind for hunting white tails. Ideally if you camped in it the night before you wouldn’t spook any deer walking into the woods like most of us sometimes do.

After all the "challenge" builds, it was really great to see a "quality" build. This is useful and like you said, many possibilities for use come to mind. A nice little refuge for an all night river fishing outing, park at night for an early am fishing trip to a hard to get to fishing location that is accessible by vehicle, if such a place exists. Then of course, all of your hunting trip ideas. Nice. Well done. Daryl is the amazing neighbor we'd all like to have. Bless you Daryl!

Waterproof canvas that rolls up and down, hung from the outside to cover up the screened in areas. Then cut some of that foam insulation to fit each opening. Roll up to your campsite, pop the top, roll down canvas, push in your pre cut insulation, turn the A/C on and you’re set.

Lojo first thing covers the screen with water proof canvas attached with Velcro, that way you can still have it popped up in the rain or winter. Next cover the inside walls with wood panels for a more finished look. Lastly make a smaller homemade bed that hangs from the wall and folds up to give you floor space and under bed storage.

Awesome job guys! Here's a few ideas...... You could get a camo tarp and use Velcro or snaps across the boards at the bottom (of the top piece that raises up) to cover over the top and down the sides to keep rain and or snow out of the screaned in area. Or better yet use heavy duty plastic (at Walmart in the craft section and it's on a roll by, priced by the yard) and just use the Velcro or snaps. And when you want to open it up just roll it up using Paracord or rope like on a tent flap/window and tie it up. Fold up table(s), multi outlet for plugging in things. Good luck and have fun!

You could cut some plexiglass to fit over the screen when you want the extra room and light with the extension up. The long pieces could be hidden in the roof and the 2 smaller one can fit in the cavity of the on wall. Then just fasten then with straps or hangers or something. Cool ass build. Sweet little DIY camper. The pop-up feature was genius. I would use bolts and screws on the conduit brackets that hold the six I-bolts for the pop-up. then I would fashion some kind of metal part that would screw onto the pop-up with a hole for the I bolt to keep the wood from tearing out. Insolate the top too.

Use some pine basement stair handrail (the big wooden dowel with one flat edge), cut some heavy-duty tarp strips to fit the sides, and attach a rail at the top and bottom (for weight)... You could attach them to unit when you set up camp, for privacy, and weatherproofing... Just roll them up to the top (under the roof-line) when not using and for storage (inside the camper) for transport. This way you don't lose your height or even some ventilation in moderate rain and it would keep some cool air from the AC in. You could theoretically, permanently affix the top edge of the tarp at the roof-line with flat stock and travel with the tarps rolled and tied, like an RV awning. Grommets and a bunch of turn-key style retainers would work instead of the round stock if you know someone who can sew the edges of your tarp 'rain flies' Tons of possibilities. :)) ***Also, framing the cube (as you did) and using roofing steel (ribs aiming up and down) of a contrasting color over your foam board would have saved you a TON of weight, and would have given you a nice pre-finished look over stained OSB which WILL break down in no-time in the elements... A 2x4 upright on either side of the window would have been all of the extra support needed, IMO. Keep it in mind for the 2.0 version when your wood needs replacing :)

A few of my novice ideas. 1st install a futon on the opposite wall of the the window, take less space till it's folded down to a bed. 2nd Put in an interior drop down cloth from the pitched roof for being able to hold in heat/cool. 3rd Make a semi permanent parking place for the camper portion. Make a spot that you can back into with the camper and "jack/lift off" the camper from the same points that ya'll used to carry it on. Pretty awesome build
@Lollylobacres
@Lollylobacres Жыл бұрын
Neat build, but I have got a couple of things. First- "Skining a Cat" is referring to Catfish not felines. Next: if You can Pop up, you can pop out. Over the wheels you could pop the camper out and create a bed on either side to sleep on. This will also create more inside floor space. You would just need to put the window in the door. Also, making a Dutch door would allow you just to walk in. You could put the top part in the camper while driving, then when you pop up the top, hang the top part of the door that would allow you to just walk in. Maybe an attachable birds nest above the window unit. Hinged table on the outside of the camper somewhere. It could hang flat with 4 legs and come completely off the camper or hang so it only needs two legs, might be difficult with pop out beds. With pop out sides you could even turn the mattress the other direction and make it a couch during the day and a bed at night. A slightly longer trailer so much more could be done with, but there is huge potential with this size if you get even more creative. Anyway, those are just some ideas... Excellent job Oh, one more idea. A shade cloth attached to a side and support bars, it could Roll up and get strapped down for travel, then let out and supported when needed.

Don't know if you had the ideas yet for it but you could cover the floor with a linoleum to save from splinters in your feet and to finish off the inside you could use a thin wood paneling to give it that finished mini cabin type feel. Put in some Interior fold away shelf system attached with a light weight chain so you can have a little workspace.

In the upper Part there could be a kind of "acrylic glass flaps" to protect* the meshed opening. and if the "window panels" are with foil for not looking into the "house"... its even better. *Protection against the dirt ruining the mesh when driving the trailer around and protection against rain and cold wind
