I use a glass pie plate to press my tortillas. Works great! Also adding some black pepper to the tumeric greatly improves absorption, acording to Dr Greger. Just use one part pepper for each 4 parts tumeric.

Heads up: I phoned Maseca & they definitely are a GMO corn. Bob's Red Mill is GMO-free but is ground coarser than Maseca (& it costs more) so must let sit longer to hydrate or dry grind in blender. Bob's is made from yellow corn & tastes WAY better than Maseca's white cornmeal! Love your channel:)

I like this. Simple. Healthy. I like the summary statement the ratio is about 2 teaspoons of whatever spice you want in the cup of cornmeal. I also like the idea of using the water to blend cilantro (or any other whole fresh item) and THEN put it into the recipe as instructed. I like super simple recipes like this that I can easily "memorize" and make. In my day- to- day life, I have a bunch of super easy recipes I don't have to think about much, and then some that I will pull out the notes. This one is easy. No notes necessary.

Loved this idea! I just made some, but they were premade tortillas, clearly had some added fat to them, and they were pretty thin. What I did was spray them lightly with water (with a spray bottle), then added my seasonings (Mrs. Dash No Salt "Fiesta Lime", it's all I had on hand at the time) and followed your cook temp and time and man were they good and crunchy! Thanks so much for all of your fun videos, you've helped me on my plant-based journey, love them all! Now I want to get the tortilla press and a taco shell former. Thanks again :-)

This is good, thanks. I'll buy a tortilla press eventually because it's cost effective, like you said. Today and yeste3rday, I made tortilla chips from premade extra thin corn tortillas. I am trying to convince my Dad to go whole food plant based since he has heart disease and this diet clearly cures the problem. He also has atrial fibrillation, and there was a study of obese people in Australia who went on a diet to help with atrial fibrillation: it lowered the frequency by like 80% and the duration/severity by like 50%. This is very important. My dad really enjoyed the chips! I got better at making them already. My parents tend to think everything is ok just being on a statin, but there is still underlying heart disease. Dad also got a stent in the anterior descending artery after 80% blockage found. T his is clearly heart disease caused by the rich western diet. The obstacles to change with my parents are pretty similar to many people, I bet: first, they appear resigned that it's inevitable to have health problems while old. Second, they have the idea that diet couldn't possibly change or cure the problem. Third, they enjoy their current food and cannot However, Dad is somewhat open and will talk to the cardiologist about it. I will gather key information and make a presentation to my Dad, including highlighting Caldwell Esselstyn's video stating 'heart disease is nothing but a toothless paper tiger'. He's a good speaker. My Dad is technical and scientific. The more he sees, the more interested he will get. Thanks again!

Having heart disease, I know that a WFPD works to reverse it. In the meantime, your Dad should know that daily magnesium supplements stop AF. Good luck to him! I prefer organic, but I am not perfect about it by any means. But I also like saving money and voting with my veganism as best I can.

Laura Castillejos I knew I want the only one wondering this. I used to make my own tortillas with the exact same masa brand. But after watching Genetic Roulette I just can't do it anymore. It's a bummer, because everyone loves my homemade enchiladas and they used to be completely 100% from scratch. Of course, now that I ditched the cheese as well they're not quite as popular with my family....

(Ps- mom used to use wax paper for non stick tortillas) Lol... as far as brunch a very popular Mexican breakfast or brunch is chilaquiles. These are typically fried tortillas in a verde sauce or a salsa and most people would serve over easy eggs on them. I could totally see a tofu scramble being used with fresh pick. I would love to see you come up with an SOS version on this. Up for the challenge??

I'd opt for this corn flour - organic masa harina corn flour - as it is not GMO. You don't get as much for the money but it's totally worth not messing up your gut flora.

Can you skip the pan and go directly to oven?

I finally got my tortilla press a couple days ago. Thanks for the recommendation and the link. Good choice. Today, I decided to see if I could make some blue corn tortillas and maybe some chips. Very easy to use. One thing I did was press into the surface some of the flavorings like onion flakes, garlic granules, spice, etc. Onion flakes was the only thing that might not be everybody's style. I liked them, but they get/stay a little crunchy. Might be better to reconstitute them like you did with the cilantro. I didn't/couldn't wait to make any chips but one of the tortillas kind of fell apart and I let it become 'chips' in the pan....pretty good. Still haven't made the pico, but used some of the salsa I had from making Mrs. Plant's salsa, no salt, no oil. It actually called for sugar so I threw in a date, but will leave it out next time. Too sweet, for me. So. Thanks for the encouragement and now I can call myself a real (if not real good,) tortilla maker. lol...Lynn

Great video, I am excited to try tortillas! You talk about recipes the same way I do, so refreshing to see there are other people who think about food like that - most people just look at me like I am super weird, LOL!

Tell me more! How do we talk about recipes that is weird for people? I am curious. 🙂
@HeatherMoreau

well, obviously the no meat and no dairy thing. but beyond that, no oil is so hard for people in my life to wrap their heads around, they just think I'm weird...or at worst think it is because I am incredibly concerned about my weight. They also just straight out do not believe me and think that oil is a health food- no open mind about it whatsoever because of what they already believe. Beyond that, I think the way I cook and combine foods is very different. I add fruit to a lot of savory dishes- like berries in salads, and bananas in tacos or mangos in rice. I just think outside the box on what would taste good together. I make tacos with jackfruit and curry. It's delicious, but most people have never even heard of a jackfruit. I also eat lots of different whole grains like quinoa, spelt, jerusalem artichoke pasta and lentil lasagna noodles. It's not weird to me, it's the most normal thing in the world to experiment with recipes and ingredients and combinations. I also do a lot of research on foods and health and ingredients so I know a lot about what is in your average gross processed crap. Most people seem just not to care or just not to want to know that stuff, because they might have to change something. I mean, Starch Solution??? What the hell, potatoes and carbs make you FAT! lol Crazy talk. Does that make sense? Do you get the same reactions?
@WellYourWorld
@WellYourWorld 7 жыл бұрын
Heather, we are going to be getting those same reactions for the rest of our lives, and the saddest part is that they often come from the people that are closest to us in our lives. As McDougall says, people want to hear good news about their bad habits; unfortunately that good news is not coming, and if it does come then it is a lie. I am so fortunate to have been able to get through to several people in my life who have transformed themselves like I have for me, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to the impact I would like to have. And that is why I started the channel, to spread the word as far and wide as I can, to support people that want to change and are struggling, to advocate for a world of love, compassion, equality, sustainability and a little bit of homesteading self reliance as well!! Thanks for being here. I look forward to getting to know you.

I also bake whole sweet potatoes regularly and then throw them in my bag for a snack.... that one always gets a big reaction! Like, wow, never thought of having a filling delicious sweet potato for a snack on the go?? lol

Great video! I instantly tried it but my Tortillas always fall apart when I try to put them in the pan... I use regular plain corn meal and water. How thick do you make your Tortillas? And how moist is the dough?
@WellYourWorld
@WellYourWorld 6 жыл бұрын
I think this is just an issue of getting the water right. Try using less water and perhaps they won't fall apart so easy. Then if you use too little water that could make it harder too. Experiment a bit more and it will not take you long

Masa and corn meal are completely different ingredients... you specifically need masa to make tortillas.

I have been wanting to make my own tortillas, love the idea of the cilantro flavored one... might add lime juice to it as well... is cornmeal the same thing?
@WellYourWorld
@WellYourWorld 7 жыл бұрын
Corn meal is totally different. I am not sure what the difference is since both seem to be made from corn, but they are totally different products. I do love cornmeal as polenta, but that is a whole other thing. Now that you have said that, I will make a polenta video sometime too since that is usually filled with oil and junk and is due for a revamp! 😁

I have cornmeal in the house that of course was a tortilla fail. I wonder if the cornmeal could be ground to flour in the Bullet to use it up.
