Here at Metcalf Mills our goal is not only the preservation and education of the grain milling process, but also to help provide a service and products that help make good, healthy, fresh milled goods more available to individuals and communities. Can almost taste it. My mom always had some around that I put on her fresh bread or biscuits. She used to make sorghum cookies and candy as well.

@@metcalfmills5679 it’s evaporate pan with dividers , you can watch as the juice thickens going though the dividers , it comes out syrup at the end into a bucket

Looks good. I was at the Amish store last week and bought a jar of sorghum. Not sure why as I've never eaten it but it sure looked purty glistening in the jar. hahaha Will have to fix a biscuit or 2 and give it a try now. Love the dachshund, I have one as well and is spoiled as all get out.

Ya know, it just dawned on me that Virginia looks a LOT like my oldest granddaughter. Elizabeth would be nearly 26, I believe.. Syrup making looks like an awful lot of hard work.. Maybe this old lady should rethink giving it a go and just stick to growing it for the grain?

Really good looking syrup. I tried to make a little syrup last year but I was doing it in a pot on the stove and burnt it😣. I don't have a press so I just tried to cook the juice out of the canes...doesn't work very well😚

That is very interesting. So you don't have to continue to boil it down in the house like you do with maple syrup. My Dad used to make maple syrup candy. Can you do the same with sorghum?

Yes you can, it will get thick and turn into candy. Once it gets to where you want it you are done

Do you ever take a dab of butter and mix up in it? I learnt something new, never seen it skimmed like that. You got all kinda tricks. Them was good we got from ya.

Tasted some sorghum couple weeks ago and it reminds me of a super light molasses. Is that what you find or does yours taste different?

Well molasses is a “by-product “ of sugar making. Sorghum is different. But folks around here always called them “molasses” or Sorghum. Thank you

My cousins made sorghum this year, His was a little thin and green. Do you have any suggestions? He gave me a jar. I was wondering if it needed to be boiled down more? So you think it would be shelf stable?

I have heard of it lasting for years. It usually gets a glob of sugar in the bottom of the jar. As far as I know it is still usable though

reminded me about many yrs ago , helpin ed makin maple syrup , here in ohio. he's long gone , place is still a farm , tho , wisht i woulda talked 2 him more, once these smart old folks is gone , so's their wisdom , that's 1 good thing about the internet, long as u make a good vid . problem is , folks are 2 busy w/ useless crap 2 actually stop , talk , and visit. , got lots of wild &( bought from county soil , water , and conservation district... swcd.. ck. ur county.. ) thornless berries , talk 2 friends , cmon down , pick em , free ,( no e. coli from the store bought , from WHAT COUNTRY??!! _).. 2 busy , watchin stupid sports or ...what a shame ... SHEEPLES.... no wonder the @#$%!!! commies takin over !! wake up america !! , ..if u dont mow , it'll grow... and ... u save the planet , ya get more time 2 ...call , visit them people ... b-4 they die , , found a good country producer of maple syrup, bunjeed a milk crate on the harley , ( 40 m.p.g. ), got a 5 gal bucket o syrup , ..oh yeah , harleys old like me , USE IT people, cause it stays here wen u die, while ur cleanin ur foo-foo-bike , i'm a ridin , watch my taillites !! enjoy life !! u only got 1 chance !!! hoo hah !!! w.f.f.w. f.t.w. 24
