😍I loved being an American exchange student in the late 80's in Germany, Leutkirch and Isny, during the Christmas and New Year holidays...oma asked what I would like for Christmas day dinner, duck or goose, and I chose goose because I had never had it and it was part of historical traditions...she made spaetzle with orange sauce, red cabbage, few other dishes but these three are my favorites that I still get anytime I can get them because I loved them soooo much and have very fond memories of living in Germany 🤗

My high school buddy John Wagners’ family was of German origin. Every Christmas season their family would invite all of his friends to their house to decorate their 20 foot Christmas tree in their living room . After we would sit down to a traditional German Xmas dinner. I always looked forward to that family tradition. The food was absolutely wonderful and different. Good memories !

My family is from Appalachian Kentucky. We have a roast turkey, a smoked turkey, and a boiled country ham finished by the retained heat method (haybox). The bone is sslippedout, while warm and then refrigerated and cut into thin pieces. Of course we have all trimmings such as cornbread dressing, yeast rolls, oyster casserole , cranberry salad. Wow, I made myself hungry.🐶😹

Rouladen! We knew them as beef roll-ups, my mother and grandmother used to make them! I had German great-grandparents. It's been a long time since we made those roll-ups. They were so good!

I am from the south so my menu consists of: roast turkey Smoked ham Homemade yeast rolls Green bean casserole Mashed potatoes Gravy Olive pickle tray Cornbread dressing Usually chicken n dumplings, but not this year Deviled eggs Desserts: strawberry tiramisu and Italian cream cake Usually a layered salad, but not this year...I love german foods

Just saw this video! Our tradition when my German mom and her German friend was alive was to make duck, the potato dumplings and blaukraut. I loved the crispy skin on the duck.

It has to be roast turkey dinner on Christmas Day here in the south of England accompanied with Brussells Sprouts, possibly roast carrot sticks and roast parsnip sticks, roast potatoes, bread sauce and gallons of gravy! Starter course is up to my wife to choose and the sweet course this year will be Christmas pudding probably with custard. Have a great Weinachten yourselves.

It really depends where in Germany one comes from, plus Family traditions. I myself are from Weisweil am Rhein , Kreiß Emmending in the state of Baden Wrürtenberg. For my Family is was smoked porksholder (Scheufele) slow cooked over salt beans, mashed potatoes or potato salad.

Well, you did not miss Stollen. In my Grandfathers neighborhood in Sheboygan, Wisconsin we had a small German Bakery. Mrs Paul lived with her invalid husband behind a small storefront! off Lincoln Avenue!! This was late 1950s!! Without going into her small awesome inventory which was baked in her small apartment oven, she had incredible Stolen both at Easter and at Christmas. In my Grandfathers house, that was always there!! Wagner Christmas!!

I am from Aistealia Christmas lunch vaies here due to the weather. Customary its fresh seafood & prawns are a must for Christmss. My families favourite is the prawn cocktail. My parents originate from Europe so the first course is a hot bowl of chicken noodle soup. crazy i know. Even if it is 40 plus degrees outside but that is our European roots Merry Christmas everyone

Hallo Marta: Vielen dank fur diese sendung. Ich fuhle mich jetzt viel heimweh nach Deutschland!!! Leider kann ich, schon wieder, nicht nach Deutschland kommen wegen covid - es macht mir wirkliech fertig!!! Die rezept fur Feldsalat mit speck habe ich schon gehabt und Ich liebe es. Die Maronen suppe kenne ich nicht aber es sieht sehr, sehr gut aus und Ich muss es probieren Wildfleisch und alle geflugel sind meine liebelings fleisch (aber schweinefleish auch).. Rindfleisch ist mir weniger wichtigh abe ich liebe rouladen und habe die oftermals gemacht. Deine Bratapfelen mit marzipan kann ich jeden tag essen. Apfelen sind meine lieblings frucht. Leider bin ich allein dieses Wehnachten weil dis covid ist sehr sehr schlimm jetzt im London und UK. Ich war eingeladen nach Devon zu fahren aber hatte zu viel angst das zu machen - 2 tage spater habe ich gelernt das meine freunde da alles krank war!!! Ich hoffe es gent du und deine familiea alles gut fur die fiertagen. Bis bald D

No offend but I've never understood why Americans have turkey on Thanksgiving and then again turkey for Christmas dinner. Why is it always turkey? 🙂

@@tubekulose Turkey, ham, rib roast of beef, a tenderloin of beef, or a crown roast of pork are all traditional American meals for Christmas. Turkey is however the most popular probably due to the price. My family will typically have a rib roast of beef, or a tenderloin of beef roast. Although, sometimes we may have a turkey. My cousins always have a ham. It does depend, I would say. This year I am going to have a roast goose. I found one at Safeway of all places. I do enjoy roasted duck with bread sauce,so fingers crossed for our goose. Our Safeway carries both this time of year.

I love feltsalad, but I can’t find seed here in Canada, and I love chestnuts also especially roasted but I did forage for chestnuts with my friend from Kronberg and we made the soup with them, delicious.

So nice to know about other people’s Christmas dinner 👍thank you so much I live in Germany when I was teenagers for 2 years and can’t remember what they had for holiday ! The lady who I did watched her kids was German artist but the husband was not ! So maybe they didn’t have Christmas celebrations 🤷🏼‍♀️but I remember getting lots gift 🎁 it was 1964-6😏

Yes the Best German Food channel on KZfaq! So much amazing and educational content! Thank you! In North America they put bacon in salad but very small pieces. Never had chestnut soup! Plus whipped cream?! Wow! Yum panfried duck breast! Roast Goose leg! Wild deer! This channel is too much I'm going crazy!

Would I love to try those venison medallions! The best venison that we ever tasted were thick, whole, loin chops. I pan fried them lightly in bacon fat. Also we once had a whole venison tenderloin. I folded it, tied it, and we oven roasted it, basting it occasionally with my favorite marinade including a little olive oil. Very tender! We grilled a number of wild geese. I spread the charcoal into a hollow ring with a drippig pan in the center. The goose then roasted in indirect heat in our round Webber grill. It worked very wel. I like duck and have had it prepared many ways. Yours with cherry sauce sounds like the best! Mother made a wonderful coffee cake with raisins in the dough and a delicious white icing. Around Christmas, to make a Stollen, she would add a lot of nuts, citrus, whatever. We usually can buy a Stollen and have one right now.

I would really like to make a German style feast. German food looks and sounds really good to me. Unfortunately German restaurants are almost non-existent in the United States, at least where I live. I guess it would be better to make it myself, anyway, so no huge loss.

Danke. Mein Grossvater stamt aus Dusseldorf. I am certain that during Advent the meals were purposely poor and spare of meat (unless they were farmers). But we had lots of different dishes at Christmas time with my Austrian mother and German father.

Roast a whole goose in a wood fired oven and rub sea salt on the skin. Prick the skin rather than score. Use the goose fat for roasting potatoes. Put a drop of port and clementine juuce in with red cabbage. Try using different brown sugars rather than white.. Use quince as well as apples.cook chestnuts on an open wood fired grill using oak or beech wood. Don't forget to use leftover goose and shred it to make ravioli.

My German mother would never serve what was traditionally served in her home growing up. Pickled herring, sauerkraut and warm homemade beer.

This year I went with Wicklein, the oldest lebkuchen bakery in Nuremberg. Chocolate & Hazelnuts of course. Just one package of 7, and I'll spread them out over the next 2 weeks, eating the last on the 25th.

Evening Marta, I like that feldspar, is that speck rather than bacon? My mum made that chestnut soup, I'd like to try that but it seems a lot of work. I've had that duck breast, but only one Christmas visiting friends in Munich, we loved it. I've made deer Rouladen in Germany, not here, Venison is ridiculously expensive. My wife's drooling at the sweet stuff, it's not attractive LOL

I thought that Speck and bacon are the same - cured pork from various cuts:) Chestnut soup is a lot of work, but you can buy already peeled chestnuts, if ou use those it takes not longer then 30 minutes to make! Deer Rouladen sound great. I would love to have some! And yes, wild game is so expensive (Deer Filet- 1kg - 30€). Oh.. let her drool :D

@@cooking-the-world morning Marta. What I know as speck is cured smoked fat, bacon, or at least English bacon is mainly meat unless you buy streaky bacon.

I fell from the chair immediately when i saw the Sunnewirbelesalat made with balsamico dressing. Whats wrong with you? Hihi. Never do this in german households. Its made always with Walnussöl and Apfelessig. Frevel! Besides this, the croutons are missed here. Nice Video.

We are a German household and this is how we serve it here in Frankfurt also in the traditional German restaurants 😉 and I have never seen it served the way you describe it, which doesn’t mean you are wrong. Germany is so regional, that’s the beauty of it, no reason to argue.

Reh is venison. Yes, it is dear, but when we eat this meat, we call it venison, like pork, not pig, beef, not cow.
