Reverse grip is good for ONE THING. I do shows (with lightsabers and with flaming swords). A quick toss to reverse grip followed by a flourish or a backhanded spin. I can then flip/toss the sword behind my back and catch it to transition to forward grip in the other hand. IT'S FOR SHOW, not for combat. And the audiences love it.

Truly the humble thumb is the greatest product of evolution. It allows us to grab and to hold without needing claws or talons, the unique shape of our hands gives us astonishing amounts of control over pretty much anything we put our hands on be it natural, like a tree branch or a rock or another animal; or man-made like board, a hammer, or a sack. But the thumb would be nothing without the fine motor control given to the hands by our brains. The ability to grab something and not instantly crush it in our grip. Able to delicately carry something fragile like broken eggshells or a small flower to working with tiny, delicate pieces of a mechanical pocket watch. The biological marvel that is the thumb: builder of civilization, proclaimer of approval (in some cultures), gesture of offense (in some cultures), and the hitchhikers best friend.

Yes, the "reverse grip" has the rule of cool on its side: No matter how absurd, idiodic or nonsensical something is, if it is cool enough, the audience will let it pass. (I insist in mentioning Killer B from Naruto using 8 blades at the same time by holding them with his hands, biceps, calfs, armpits and mouth, moving with only one leg and basically doing the equivalent to capoeira in a sowrd fight by jumping and spinning in order to make his attacks almost unpredictable. It is trurly stupid, but I really love it.

I noticed how the knight was holding his sword and I remember asking my uncle about it, he told he didn't notice it so he couldn't comment on it. But I never knew that it was a real hold! The video wasn't talking about small blades tho... 🙄 Reverse grip on standard or long blades is just stupid and ALMOST completely ineffective UNLESS ur close to ur opponent (or whatever ur trying to cut). Way more practical AND useful to just use the weapon the way it was intended to be used. For short blades, yes, MAYBE u can get away with reverse grip, because again, those would be used in a close range.

How does reverse grip work with small blades? Dont the normal problems transfer over?
@AmazingMrMe123
@AmazingMrMe123 Жыл бұрын
@@pooperdooper3576 not necessarily, if you put your hands up in a boxing/striking stance, a reverse grip blade would face away from you, and a standard grip would point the blade toward you. If you are close enough to need to defend yourself in an unarmed fighting style a reverse grip can be practical. Also in grappling, it's easy to brace a reverse gripped blade against yourself your body, point forward, than in a standard grip. All of those advantages completely fall apart the longer the blade gets.
@pooperdooper3576
@pooperdooper3576 Жыл бұрын
@Forest Wolf wouldn't it be better to loosen your guard just slightly, pushing your arms further out, and tilting your hands to point the blade towards them in a standard grip? That would control more space. Also, I'm confused on what you mean when you talk about being close enough to fight them in an unarmed fighting style. Do you just mean that you'd fight them like you would if you didn't have a knife, but you have a knife? In that case, how would reverse grip be better? Sorry for not understanding well.

In the videogame Warhammer: Vermintide 2, the Grail Knight DLC introduced my favorite weapon, the Bretonnian Longsword to the game. That weapon is actually a longsword. Used with two hands, instead of the other, lesser longswords that the game has to offer, which are used one handed for some reason, with less reach than a longsword should have. And that weapon has a little animation quirk that made me fall in love immediately. With that weapon you can hold your heavy attacks indefinitely, going into a hanging guard stance, allowing you to block attacks while having a heavy attack ready to let loose like an arrow. Either to the right of you with your first heavy attack, to the left with your second and overhead for the third. And with that third attack, you can see Kruber using the flat of his blade to guard himself and if you hold that attack long enough, he will move his dominant hand to a thumb grip position. That little animation made me fall in love with the weapon. And it also helps that it's one of the best weapons the game has to offer :D.

Here's what I found: The reverse grip can be effective in certain fighting situations, but it also carries some risks and limitations. On the one hand, the reverse grip can allow you to strike with more power and precision, particularly with thrusting or stabbing motions, because you have more leverage and control over the weapon or tool you are holding. This can make it a useful technique for close-range combat, particularly if you are facing an opponent who is unarmed or wielding a shorter weapon. However, the reverse grip also leaves your hand and wrist vulnerable to injury, particularly if you are using a sharp or heavy object. It also limits your range of motion and your ability to block or parry attacks, which can leave you vulnerable to counterattacks from your opponent. Moreover, the effectiveness of the reverse grip depends on the specific fighting style and context in which it is used. In some martial arts, such as Filipino martial arts, the reverse grip is a fundamental technique that is used for both offense and defense. In other styles, such as boxing or Muay Thai, the reverse grip is not commonly used, and may not be effective against opponents with different training or tactics. In Summary, while the reverse grip can be a useful tool in certain fighting situations, it should be used with caution and in conjunction with other techniques and strategies to ensure maximum effectiveness and minimize the risk of injury.

When it comes to large swords my personal favourite grip is the one where you grab the blade itself and use the handle and pummel as a club. I know for a FACT that this happened because some knight forgot to sharpen his sword and so decided to do that but it was so effective due to how bewildering it is to get clubbed by a sword that it became an official style. Getting clubbed with a great sword is like getting kicked by a 1 legged man. Sure it can happen and to great effect, but it’s never not going to be strange to witness or to have done to you

"Thumb on the blade" instantly reminded me of that time G.K. Chesterton quoted a Sicilian bandit: "Who would condescend to strike down the mere things that he does not fear? Who would debase himself to be merely brave, like any common prizefighter? Who would stoop to be fearless--like a tree? Fight the thing that you fear. You remember the old tale of the English clergyman who gave the last rites to the brigand of Sicily, and how on his death-bed the great robber said, 'I can give you no money, but I can give you advice for a lifetime: your thumb on the blade, and strike upwards.' So I say to you, strike upwards, if you strike at the stars." -- G.K. Chesterton

Tbh i'm obsessed with the sword to the ground grip to start the fight. You place your blade to the ground. Its a defencive grip funny enough 😂

A good warrior knows how to use an equiped weapon in all ways, for they all have a purpose. Thumb grip tends to be way more versatile than reverse, unless it's a knife.

i legit discovered that on my own while trying different ways to hold a sword. It started with using the index on the guard, which let me have better and more stable horizontal swings. By continuing to try things, i just found about the thumb.

I saw a man reverse grip and then throw a longsword like it was a spear, I mean he literally said “a crossbow, who needs that?”and then proceeded to throw it THROUGH a shield at mach 2 and then pull out a dagger to actually fight.

However, if it were a Lightsaber, that would be useful for an offhand saber, depending on your style. A lot of lightsaber styles leave you open there, so having a defensive shotosaber in your blind spot would be beneficial. Also, you could use it to beyblade if you are general greivous.

Pretty sure that's just a parrying dagger which would also be bad. You want to catch the blade so that you can thrust your blade into your enemy without worrying about being hit. In reverse grip, it's harder to catch the blade and your fingers would likely be cut off. If you had finger protection, then what's the difference between that and a shield? Got to say though, lightsabers would totally be good for a rapier style of combat.

Quick summary from a german man Zwerch or Zwerchfell is the diaphragm in your ear meaning you hit your opponents ear. Krum means crooked and krumhau is basically just a curved slash. Schielen means squinting so Schielhau means you thrust at your opponents eye.

i've just watched a video about reverse grip and even an expert said there's no actual reverse grip technique for a blade at least as long katana, besides being able to draw more comfortably from the sheath at a very close distance. but once the sword is already drawn, there's no use of reverse grip any longer

In my opinion Reverse grip is good for one thing: Dagger strikes against plate armor. If you have a shortsword you can knock an opponents blade out of the way or out of their hand, then reverse grip a Dagger into their stomach or arm, the reverse grip gives you better strength in the stab and also keeps you upright more than a full thrust

Only advantage of reverse I can see is that it's hard for the opponent to track your weapon so you can catch somebody who isn't a master but more intermediate off guard. But it only works once or twice against the same opponent in sparing before it completely falls off.

I was about to give a reason for reverse grip with lightsabers but realized most of the time it’s a shorter lightsaber held like that and with the equivalent of a dagger it makes sense
