The painting could not have been from the Jones family since when Coraline is exploring the house, she writes on her notepad: one boring blue boy in a painfully boring painting or something like that. This phrase and her intonation and facial expression show that there is no previous connexion between the Jones and this painting

Hear me out. Maybe she did have a child who died. She could have sunk into a deep depression and attempted to kill herself by throwing herself down the well, instead she found this world that she couldn't escape, so she sacrificed her soul to create the magic and allow her to move the world into anything she wanted, perhaps when her soul wasn't enough she was driven insane trying anything to keep her perfect world alive, including stealing the souls of children. I know it's far fetched but still..

@@dxRgg-gj7ud Sort of like mirror images that the Beldam controls? Like spies? Maybe she used the mice. There could be portals all over town. Maybe that would explain how she knows a lot more about Coraline when the doll isn't with her. How far does her reach extend into the real world? Remember the picture of Coraline's friends from her old home? We as the audience know what her friends used to call her because we're privy to that when Coraline is unpacking and she reminisces about her friends. If I'm not mistaken, her friends were talking in the picture because it was Coraline's head. To our knowledge, she didn't discuss her old life with the Beldam. How could the Beldam know what Coraline's friends called her Coraline didn't tell her or if the doll didn't see it? Does this help?

Maybe she likes spiders so much because they're so widely feared especially by children, so when the children she lures in see her true form that resembles a spider they're to afraid to escape. And eventually after taking on her spider like form when she started to replace her body part, her obsession with them became so strong she started to act like one.

stephanie cohen I like your theory, but I still think that my Arachne one is another explanation. The creators could've left the Spider imagery, and the needle and thread throughout the film, as a reference to the Greek myth of Arachne. Or perhaps the Beldam knew the story and liked it, thus taking the persona of a spider as it suited her needs, and the sewing idea is also explained through the story too. As Arachne was known for being a skilled weaver. Spiders weave many webs as they catch their prey. It may not be in the same place or made in the same manner, but it's there regardless, and the purpose is always the same. Despite this I'm not too sure how to justify the Beldam knowing that myth. I'm not sure people at that time knew about different mythologies beyond Egyptian stories, much less were interested in the topic.

the bugs have an answer, in the dvd commentary they say coralline likes bugs, and each time coralline goes back in the other world things get more and more elaborate and over the top. the creators said the beldam went over board on the bugs, because coralline likes them.
@ummehabiba7250
@ummehabiba7250 7 жыл бұрын
i thought she didnt like bugs because when she's exploring the house and goes to the bathroom she see's the bugs on the wall and kills them and also jots down on her notes "12 disgsting bugs" which contradicts the notion that she likes bugs? so maybe it could symbolism for when she start's seeing the beldams world in the its true form;it's infestested by evil, miserableness and all things disgusting. That could also explain the whole atmosphere of the story how its always cold and miserable(its always raining or foggy etc) because bugs tend to survive and reproduce in this environment which relates to the theme. this is just my observation

I think the beldam is based around a wolf spider. wolf spiders sometimes eat their young and will sometimes wait in habitats for prey to pass before hunting them. they also have excellent eyesight and touch (eyes and hands very distinguishable on the beldam). They also carry some of their young high on their back (which could explain the shape used for the beldam's back) and when light is shone on their eyes it is reflected to create a strong glow (unlike other spiders). this could explain why her eyes light up when the mention of games comes up and why the moon (if it is her eye) glows

Near the end of the movie wasn't Coraline taped in a burrow type thing of a web. And the "silken doors" could represent the Beldam conecting worlds.

What if the Beldame fell through the well when she was a child? (explains what she was doing around a well in the first place, her creativity and obsession with playing games) maybe she lured other children into the world to play with her (as she was lonely)
@oliviafaith9535

And also maybe she likes bugs so much because they crawled down the well themselves so were her only companions when she didn't lure children or because she knew how
@karianderson2252

Olivia B this kind of makes sense. she fell down the well as a kid, being the first occupant of the void. and as he said in this video, the void calls. children are easier to manipulate so when it called her, she obeyed and fell down it mistakenly. and since it takes a child's soul for magic, so to speak, she used her own! (i'm building upon his initial theory and yours.) it can only be a child's soul that creates the magic. so she uses her own and sews on the button eyes, sealing herself to the Other World. but why doesn't she escape? 1) she has no reason to because there's no threat. 2) it's a void where you can create your ideal world, who wouldn't want to stay? she maybe plans on staying there for a little bit, but she unknowingly sealed herself to the Other World and is now trapped. eventually, with time and much use of her own 'soul sand' to distract herself from her loneliness, the magic from her soul is used up. by this time, i'm sure she's much older, which explains the major time gap between when she was first there (the 1800) and the time when she goes after her first victim (the 1900) and how she had been able to survive. because so much time has passed, once her magic has been depleted, she begins to deteriorate. she goes after her first victim, but the attempt is futile. even though much time has passed, it still wasn't enough to 'kill her' so to speak. more time passes and she tries again? and her obsession with games is because she was a kid when she fell and spent her time in loneliness, thus going in depth of both yours and his theory. that's why she's so excited to play games. she didn't necessarily grow up playing them with anyone but herself. and that's why that's all she really wants to do with coraline. just my theory.
@karianderson2252
@karianderson2252 7 жыл бұрын
ooh better yet! (i just reviewed this comment and one thing wasn't making sense to support the theory) what if instead of all of her magic being used up when she went after the first kid, what if it was running out? and so in an attempt to save her magic, she didn't use any when trying to lure the child so that's why he escaped. becoming desperate, she developed a sure-fire scheme. she would use all the remaining magic she had to make sure the kid was captured. that explains why she was able to make the world and doll in the first place. maybe that's what happened

So I have 2 points I really want The Theorizer to ponder on that I have discovered about Coraline that he has *not yet* mentioned : 1) *How* does the beldam know about Coraline's friends in Michigan? When Coraline visits the other world for the first time and she goes into her bedroom for this first time (in the other world) there is a photograph with Coraline's old friends that can *TALK AND MOVE* in the picture. Considering the beldam must have created that, how did she know what they looked *and* sounded like ? Coraline says nothing about a change in their appearance or voice, so it is safe to assume that the picture is identical to the real people. They also call her "Loper" which is a legitimate nickname they gave her, but *how* did the beldam know about this ? 2) Wybie's grandmother: Wybie's grandmother is quite an important character as she A. Owns the pink palace B. Lost her sister to the beldam as children C. Is a relative to Wybie Now, my point is *ALWAYS* when Wybie talks to Coraline and he starts to talk about the pink palace / danger or the grandma's sister, we always hear her interrupt the conversation by calling for him and sometimes ring a bell. When she calls him, she sounds worried and desperate to get him back home. I also believe her timings for calling Wybie home *aren't just convenient*, as in she desperately wants to hide the secrets of the other world and her missing sister too . I have come to dead ends with my points though but I feel that they have a lot of potential and I would be super happy if you could ponder on my points or even expand and include them into a theory. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and have a great day 👍🏼

It's Me Tamara 1) the coraline doll was able to see how much she was missing her friends 2) I have my own theory: the grandmother was first into the world and found the beldam out and she and her sister must have been in an arguement with her or the other was a problem. She took her to the beldam and got rid of her sister. She obviously had good relations with the beldam and could communicate with her. She put away the doll somewhere and if I'm right the twin must have died of old age. So the beldam needed a new child. That's why the grandmother made her one exception of having a child living there. Before that she wanted no children there(especially whibey to find her out) but since coraline would have been gotten rid of it didn't matter. The beldam called for her to send the doll down the well to remake it for coraline. It was sent back up and grandmother put it in the attic for whibey to find. She might have been the true antagonist considering that all the beldam wanted was love. It may be far fetched but whatever😂 like if you think it's a good theory😂

bahbearstuff so I think that wybies grandmother doesn't want wybies to go in the pink palace because of the Beldam. So clearly she does know something about her. What I'm thinking is that the grandmother and the Beldam made a plan that if the grandmother continued to help the Beldam she wouldn't harm wybie, witch is all the grandmother wanted, to keep wybie safe after she had lost her sister he's all she has left. So like u said the grandmother gives the dolls to the Beldam to fix and sends it up and she hides it wybie finds it gives it to Coraline and the grandmother and he Beldams bet continue

i dont know if this even relates to coraline at all but i feel as if it sounds similar to the beldam. when you mentioned the theories of the boy in the painting being the beldam's son and then another on why she went into the well was to find her son. well it reminded me of the Hispanic legend "La Llorona" . la llorona is a story about a woman who's children had died in a river by her house (some say she drowned them due to frustration from being left by her husband) and anyway as stated in wikipedia ,After she is challenged at the gates of heaven over the whereabouts of her children, she is not permitted to enter the afterlife until she has found them. she is forced to wander the Earth for all eternity, searching in vain for her drowned offspring. She constantly weeps, hence her name "La Llorona."She is caught between the living world and the spirit world. sounds like beldam a lil bit.anyways La Llorona kidnaps wandering children who resemble her missing children. She asks them for forgiveness, then drowns the children to take the place of her own. People who claim to have seen her say she appears at night or in the late evening by rivers or lakes . i feel like this helps explain maybe her thirst for souls of children and explains the picture (that i dont really believe is the jones's)

i dont think the painting of the boy is the jones's because coraline counts it in the beginning also why would that be the only thing unpacked for the living room. since the painting is in both the real world and the beldam's i think it belonged to her. the painting is shown to change from a sad boy to a happy one obviously telling coraline its happier here while her real home is not but i think the beldam changed it for herself to see her (maybe) son happy and not sad and feel less guilty ?

about the sad boy painting. could he possibly be the beldam's first victim? from the video titled The Secret TRUTH About Coraline [Theory] The Theorizer mentioned the dates labeled above the taffy bowls. he also mentioned that one date was missing. in order for the beldam to survive she needed a child who was living around the year 1900, The Theorizer initially presumed the cat to be the beldam's first victim who escaped but that theory was later disproven. so instead of the cat perhaps the boy in the painting was the beldam's first victim who had escaped, thus causing her to take a skeletal spidery form.

Okay, so, this is what I think that happened: The Beldam moved to the pink palace. At some point, for some reason, she fell into the well and appeared in the void we call "The Other World". My guess is that she couldn't remember it (I will explain later), so, in order to survive, she used her own soul to create everything she needed. That's not news. Well, as we know, she found out that her soul wouldn't last forever, so she decided that she needed more. To get someone's soul, you need his or her consent, and since it would be too hard to convince an adult to say yes, she started dragging children into The Other World (also because their soul is the purest). I think she knew there was a little door in the living room and then created, by using all that remained from her soul, she made that tunnel. That is why it gets deteriorated when she starts losing her magic at the middle of the movie. Well, the portal in the well has magical power over its surroundings, and since the Beldam had basically become the owner of the Other World, the clouds were shaped like her hands, as if they were saying "there is something dangerous here". That's why those clouds fade away when the Beldam dies. Okay, this comment is getting quite long. I'm going to write my main ideas: -The Beldam is connected to Wybie's grandmother, since she got her twin sister's soul. I guess the cat could feel what was happening and, fearing that the Beldam could hurt Wybie by using his grandma, he started to watch the boy. Something that could proof their connection is that scene in which the doll watches Wybie telling Coraline about this grandmother's missing sister. Not much after that, the grandma calls. Why? Because the Beldam was afraid he would make Coraline afraid of going to the Other World, so, somehow, she made the poor old lady feel like something was "wrong" (as if there was danger outside) and called Wybie. -You can't remember what happens when you "move" from a world to another". That's why Coraline parents (who probably entered the little door Coraline left opened while looking for her) could't remember what they's gone through and why the Beldam didn't want the key to fall through the well. She didn't REMEMBER it could lead the key to her world. The only reason why Coraline remembered is because she ATE the food the Beldam gave her, and it was full of soul dust. The Ghost Children mentioned the had a lot of delicious things to eat apart from all the toys and entertainment. By eating, they carry some of the Other World with them and could remember it. That explains why the Beldam is always cooking. She needs Coraline to eat, to REMEMBER her and to feel like coming back. The cat could also remember because, as he claimed himself, the cats have "superior scents".

Ok omg I'm so excited about this. You said that the beldam can only alter, not create. What if there was someone before the beldam? The beldam has lots of traits and things resembling a spider. What if the "someone" before her just took a spider and altered it into the beldam? That's why her face and parts are replaced or deteriorating! What if there's a whole other force behind it, and the beldam needs the children for something bigger than her?

I actually have two potential theory's about the Beldams bug obsession that I've never seen or heard anyone else bring up or talk about. 1) The first theory I came up with was that the beldam has an obvious obsession with bug because they fascinated her but she was especially drawn to spiders. This maybe caused her to read a lot, as she likely would have done at the time, and it eventually turned into her doing a lot of research on them when she was in the real world but now she uses them as a type of ground almost, like they remind her of a life she once had even if it is subconsciously. That was my theory for a long time but it never felt full enough. I didn't have a lot to base it on it was just something I thought of and it made a lot of sense so I ran with it... Until I figured out my second theory. 2) She has an obsession with bugs because of the relatively free lives they live while she trapped and just wants to be free again even though it may be in. She has a deeper connection, pull, or she is more draw to spiders because 1. They sit in there web usually out in the middle of nowhere which is a home they built like her sitting in the void in a home she built home. 2. Spiders wait for a bug to fly into there web like she does with the kids 3. Also some spiders can alter there appearance like her This is just a few thoughts that ran through my brain as I was coming up with this theory. They also carry more weight and have a lot of support for my theory in the movie.

Actually the first time I saw the movie since I was 5 or so I was learning about mythology, and ONE in particular reminded me of the belldam, it was about a woman who thought she was the greatest seemstress and better than Athena (god of wisdom) herself so Athena and the woman had a competition over who was the better seamstress and the woman lost so as a punishment Athena turned her into a spider ( the first of its kind) so I did more research into the story and one of the paragraphs said that spiders are seen as the makers/creates of new beginings. I don't know its something that has been on my mind for awhile and I wanted to get it off my chest and I hope it sparks something for the spider belldam question...

I think the blonde boy in the painting was in the previous owners since when Coraline's dad told her to list stuffs she found, she wrote the boy on the painting which means the Jones family didn't brought in the painting with them while moving in. If they did, Coraline will definitely know it's their painting so she already knows it, and wouldn't write it down with a serious-ish confusing face.

To add on to my theory I left in the comments of the last video, the mom keeps mentioning the car accident and seems to be subtly trying to get Coraline to remember it. If they did die, the parents may have accepted their deaths and tried to help Coraline move on. This may help support why the parents were more irriatated than Coraline remembered and caused Coraline to act out and adventure around the home they were supposed to go to. This may be why she can see the ghosts when wybie cants, any why wybie thinks she's crazy when she tries to explain everything she saw when his grandma saw the same thing and told him about it. She can find paranormal things easily, such as her ease to find the fairy ring and can use the candy sight thing. She's naturally now paranormal and all the events may be her denial of her own death, she's strong and so I her soul so her denial would be soul. By the time she can't find her parents and accept that they may not come back, which causes her to cry and change slightly, even when she still has a little fight left, because she may still be indenial. But she ultimately and slowly accepts that she's dead which is why in the end, those whom have died or live there, where her soul haunts, live peacefully amongst each other

In your last video you pointed out that the book said that Beldam put her mother in the grave herself and when she found her trying to crawl out she put her back. Beldam put her mother in the grave because her soul stealing started in the real world. part of the definition of Beldam is "a witch." her mother was a good witch and the original Beldam. she caught her daughter stealing souls of children to keep her youth. Beldam's mother disapproved which caused her to be killed by her own daughter. the black cat is not a reincarnation of a child who escaped but the family's "familiar". the cat knew Beldam has Always loved games and the cat tricked her into the bottom of the well as revenge and to bring justice for killing her mother and the towns children. at the end of cocaline we can see the Beldam is absolutely terrified of dying which is presumably why her soul stealing first began. while in the bottom of the well she used the only things in her possession to try and save her life. buttons, thread, and a single needle. Thus she created a portal to the other world which greatly slowed her deterioration and causing her need for children to drastically decline. Sorry for format and horrible writing Im on a phone.
@GamerZombieCupcake
@GamerZombieCupcake 7 жыл бұрын
also the size of the Beldam home reminds me of really old hospitals. they were much more homely looking. I actually have one of these old timey hospitals 15 min from my home. Perhaps Beldam was responsible for relocating children when their parents died which is why the towns people never found out. It was assumed the children were sent to family in other towns. Beldam's mother was a healing witch only using her magic for good and became horrified of her daughters actions. we only see the three ghost children because they were the only ones killed in the other world.

I think that the Beldam's connection with spiders is just symbolic of her character. She preys on things less powerful than her, entices them into staying with her, and destroys them. Her supposed hospitality is a web and lure, the children are the bugs, and their souls are the spider's sustinance. And of course, the Beldam represents the spider.

regarding moms “key selection” when looking in the drawer. it’s semi common for people to have a “key drawer” where various keys from around the house get left. considering coralines family has just moved in, it’s no surprise that there would be a key collection in a drawer from the last family that lived there. further more, mom knows the little door is made with an old school lock/door knob meaning it’ll take a “skeleton key” to unlock it. she looks in the drawer and sure enough the only “skeleton” style key is the odd button one. she try’s it to uncover bricks... because she’s an adult, and the beldam doesn’t want her attention. :P the real question by me is why did the old wallpaper around the little door need to be ripped open if coraline went through it just the night before? :)

Maybe, because they were identical twins, the Beldam set out only one doll, planning to go after whichever twin found the doll first. One day, the grandmother follows the twin to the other world and, because the Beldam is busy pleasing the twin, she doesn't notice the the grandmother got in. Because the world is created for the twin and not the grandmother, she is able to see the world for what it is and immediately turns around and goes back to the real world. After the Beldam takes the twin's soul, she goes after the grandmother but, because the grandmother knows the truth, she doesn't fall for the Beldam's trap.

@The Theorizer This may be the darkest theory that I have just theorised.Back then in Ashland Oregon when it was first created Beldam was involved in one of the biggest events in the Film's history.And that was the Salem Witch Hunts in Ashland Oregon. www.ashlandhistsociety.com/Pages/SalemWitchTrials.aspx Basically the Villagers lured Beldam out into the open and killed her via Drowning and her remains was never extracted from the bottom of the Well.Meanwhile the Black Cat symbolises the Salem's Cat and as for the stitching equipment and usage of puppets symbolises to me of Voodoo and WitchCraft. Beldam in her past life was a Witch and in order to get revenge of all of those Villagers who killed her she went and killed off their lineage.In other words their future children. She would befriend the children and extract all of their life energy for her to absorb in order to maintain her body in the Other Realm and her Spider form is that of a Black Widow which are a native species to Ashland Oregon which explains her infatuation with Spiders.Also the Villagers killed Beldam in the day so her spirit will always see the night time starry sky and that portrait in the other house must be a reminder of the day that Beldam died.It's a memory that she would never forget. To finish off the term Beldam equates to "Witch" which reinforces this theory.

+The Theorizer I have another theory about Beldam and the blonde child in the photo. Firstly, I believe that the child was Beldam's son. I believe that he was playing near the well but he ended up falling in. Because of this, The Beldam became depressed and lonely so she used magic, because she is a witch, to create a world of fun for herself but there was a catch...Her soul. Her soul was taken so, like you said, she could control the world. She chose the well as the entrance because it reminded her of her deceased child.The reason the picture is in the house is because Beldam is trapped in her own world because she has no soul.This theory could also be why Beldam calls herself "The Other Mother" because she wants to be a mother again to forget about her deceased son. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, it's a half-baked theory.

When all three wonders were stripped of their power, the whole world fell apart and Coraline and the cat ran into the house. When walking down the corridor you can see the wallpaper falling off the wall and when she walked through the lounge, the bug furniture were broken and basically lost their magic. My theory is the Beldam's soul powered the house and the children powered the three wonders. So when only the house was literally starting to fall apart, she started to lose her magic. It was because of this she was forced to change her form, she couldn't help it . Sorry it was long I got carried away I have a lot of spare time on my hands 😂 hope it helped 👍🏼👍🏼

ive always thought this to be something like the polar express. the children still open to magic can hear the bell but the parents cannot since they have grown and moved on from magical things. similar to a thought of adults not being lured in by the beldam because they are not able to be manipulated into believing the magic. doesn't completely explain it but this is what ive always thought.

Natalie Misra because the parents were taken away from coralline so coralline would have no choice but to stay with the Beldam, but since she won the game and all her magic was gone*,oh and all her magic went when the cat ripped out her eyes and when he did that all he magic was released because the buttons are what hold the magic in, and once she lost them he magic was released, *the Beldam couldn't get rid of her memory because coralline was who the Beldam was after, she won the game and her memory stayed, but all the other ghost children don't remember there names because most of their memories were taken by the Beldam, and while the parents were in the mirror their memories were slowly being taken too, and since they were there for so long all their memory was taken

i've watched coraline many times today. And i've found somethings, when coraline's other dad sings her a song on his piano, listen to the lyrics its says, "All our eyes will be on coraline". and also he says "shes a doll". The other mother always calls coraline "my doll". Other mother said to coraline "soon you'll see things our way", meaning like when coraline has buttons she will see like they do, or that if coraline doesnt agree to having the buttons sewed into her, other mother will force it. When coraline walks around the world and the cat talks to her, she finds out things, and the rat plays his trumpet, the cat said "This one was sounding an alarm". Meaning the rat was spying and that it was warning the other mother that she found out things, and that also means the other mother knows that she knows; so why does the other mother act like nothing happened or that she doesnt know that coraline knows.? When coraline returns to the other mother in the "Bug room" after finding all three souls she says " so your back" and she says the cats name like she knows him.

I find it interesting that at one point in the movie, Coraline asks where somebody is and the 'other father' says "He/she had a long face, and mother didn't like it". Then, after that, the piano covers his mouth and shakes it's finger. Maybe the piano was trying to do something similar to protect the Bel-dam, 'fearing' that Caroline will choose to escape in result of that statement. So, the point of my ''mini-theory', maybe the piano was a living thing before becoming a piano, and doesn't want to get 'punished' for letting the father reveal such a creepy statement.

I noticed after rewatching Coraline that the scene where Coraline goes up to the well for the first time, you notice a circle of mushrooms which is also known as a 'fairy ring' or a 'Pixie ring'. They can be considered to be good luck but are more popularly known for being a bad Omen. They are also considered to be portals to other worlds, which is interesting to the theory that the well is a portal to the 'other' world. Also in the movie, you notice that Coraline steps into the 'Fairy Ring', which is very very bad luck. It's said if you walk into the middle of a 'Fairy Ring' you are said to "die young". Which is very very interesting!!!

Two things: 1. For the blue boy there probably isn't any important relationship with it, apart from making the other world more at Coraline's standards in the movie. Like you said in one of the previous theories, the Beldam adjusts the world to the kids' standards, so in Coraline the picture in the other world was adjusted to make it more her standards (which relates to how the boy still has his ice cream in the other world and doesn't in the normal world). 2. For the spider obsession from the Beldam, as you said in this theory, she can only altar objects from the normal world as a base for her creations, so when she fabricated her life to stay alive she needed to use an object to stay in her physical form. So, maybe she used something like a spider to maintain her corporeal (I think that's the word) form in the other world and that might be when the obsession came to play. Maybe when a new life is created from an object the life has some traits from the original object, which relates to the Beldam's behavior in the web scene. Well, that's my take on some of the lingering ideas and I hope you take them into consideration :P

What if Beldam got lured into the well the same way all of the kids got in. The other world had her favorite thing, spiders and she got lured down the well. She then signed a deal, get yourself and the world souls and become a spiderhuman thing with immence power. She agreed and became the creature. With these new powers, she could do all the things she does. The questions I found that is still unanswered and important is who or what made the deal with and how does it help them.

I have a theory. I think that Beldam and Other Wybie have a bad connection. I mean, when Beldam lets Coraline in the house after the show, he frowns when Coraline goes inside. Beldam then turns and tells him to SMILE. And later in the movie, when Wybie grabs Coraline from the mirror, he's mouth is forced into a smile. I think this means that Wybie has a control over his soul still, and is not doing what she wants him to do. Have you noticed all the button eyed characters are SMILING? I think that this means that the soul has been dealt with. And when Wybie's forced smile is taken out by Coraline, he hushes her and rushes her to the door. I think when the button eyed people are not smiling, they get a little, grumpy. And to add to that, when Beldam tells Coraline to say sorry and she refuses. Then she starts growing and stops smiling. And she was when Coraline said no, she was trying not to frown. I think she transforms as a form of disipline, as someone did not do as she said. Example, Wybie had frowned and later on, gets forced a smile. Just a SMILE theory, I call it. :)

Me and my friend are having a sleepover and we just decided to try and think of some points why this theory is holey (please don't hate it's just for a bit of fun). 1. Why did the parents see the door when Coraline left it open and not when she tried to show it to them before? Some of you may argue that it was because the Beldam didn't want to kidnap the parents at that precise moment. However, people say she lives off people's souls. Why not the parents and Coraline? Why didn't she let them go through before? 2. (This view is my crazy friends and just meant to amuse you) The picture was hung up in the LIVING room, maybe to suggest that it is something like Alma - a short story on KZfaq - so he is kinda living in the picture. 3. Why can't the Beldam create? You said she might have created the opposite world, but apparently she is inable to form humans from nothingness. This question is weak but we still thought we'd include it. 4. This isn't really a hole in the theory but oh well. Where did the buttons come in? Is there perhaps a past on it, something to do with the boy in the painting or something. Please don't hate we are just nerds who want to type something 😂😂

My theory on the buttons is that it's the Beldam's way of getting you to sell your soul to the devil. Instead of writing out a contract in blood which would scare them away, maybe she genuinely thought that children seeing how perfect her world was and how happy everyone was there with the buttons in the eyes that they would want them too and would happily let her sew them in not even realizing that they had just given up their souls.

If she's stealing souls to make herself younger it makes a weird amount of logic that she needs younger souls. Parents would be a lot harder to trick and manipulate into staying there forever too so she only used them to trap Coraline. 3. It's one of the laws of the universe. You can't make any new matter, you can only manipulate what is already here. 4. She's a spider! She loves sewing!

Also, maybe she's obsessed with spiders because her spirit animal was a spider. And maybe she turned herself into a spider because she believed that her spirit animal could save her life. The spider is a remarkable figure of feminine energy and creativity in the spirit animalkingdom. Spiders are characterized by the skilled weaving of intricate webs and patience in awaiting their prey. By affinity with the spider spirit animal, you may have qualities of high receptivity and creativity. Having the spider as a power animal or totem helps you tune into life’s ebbs and flows and ingeniously weave every step of your destiny. Spider Meaning Common meanings for the spider spirit animal or totem are: PatienceReceptivityFeminine energyCreativityWeaver of life’s fateShadow self, dark aspects of life or personality The spider as a spirit animal offers many interpretations. Its symbolism has both a dark and a light side, reflecting its connection with life’s many facets. Spider spirit animal: Symbol of creativity In many cultures, the spider is given credit for its ability to weave intricate webs that are a miracle of organic engineering. If you have the spider as an animal spirit guide, you may have an affinity with acts of creation and the ability to create delicate, intricate things or ideas that are also strong. As the weaver of the web, the spider symbolizes the spirit of creation. In several traditions, she’s the totemic symbol of the Mother, strong feminine energy. In Ancient Egypt, the spider was used as a symbol to represent the goddess of the Divine Mother, Neith. In some American Indian tribes, it is considered as the symbol for the creator of the world and by extension is associated with the female creative energy. Patience: The wisdom of the spider totem Like the spider waiting her prey patiently, the presence of this spirit animal in your life could point to the need to show patience regarding a project or some ideas that you are trying to realize. Giving some time while paying attention to how events are unfolding and acting when the opportunity truly arise might be a lesson of wisdom from the spider spirit animal. Symbolism of the spider: Life spirit and weaver of destiny Just like the spider weaves her beautifully engineered web, this spirit animal fosters the integration of all parts and aspects of your life into a whole. When the spider shows up in your life, this spirit animal could guide you to integrate some piece of your personal “puzzle” and gain a more coherent perspective on your life. OH MY GOSH I JUST LOOKED UP SPIDER SPIRIT ANIMAL AND GOT THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also I found this Whenever the Other Mother prepares regular human food, it is shown that unlike Coraline and the Other Father, she is not shown eating any of it, either having an empty plate or having no plate at all, preferring to keep her attention on Coraline, foreshadowing that she will eat Coraline soon. The only time she is ever shown eating in the book or movie is when she eats a live cocoa beetle(s). This could allude to her spider-like qualities, having an interest in bugs and viewing Coraline as her willing prey

I know this video is old, but a theory idea popped in my head about why the Beldam is obsessed with spiders (be prepared, it might break another level of depth). It all stems from The Beldam's beginning, when the town of Ashton was being built/colonized. The lands were still occupied by the Natives, though not as much as they had been when the first settlers arrived. That being said, their lore and religion would have still been known about. This is big because many tribes had a Spider Goddess. Spider Grandmother (or Tse-che-nako) was believed to be the creator of the world, the starry sky, string games and fire. (Im kind of freaking out on the connections here...). Could it be that, while alive in her time, The Beldam not only idolized but worshipped this goddess? Could be how she received her powers, too? Another fun note: Those that believed/worshipped Spider Grandmother NEVER spoke her real name (Tse-che-nako) out of fear, unless it was on a day of celebration for her. I thought this was interesting, considering we never hear the Beldam's true name. Anyway, food for thought. About to watch the 7th installmemt, so might see your take on it there, ya? Truly enjoy your theories on this :)

So. I hope you read this, because I feel very passionately about this. Now, I don't really like looping theories developed in the movie back to the book, because they are different, but I would like to just a little bit. But first, with eye flashes, I think since she doesn't have eyes to portray excitement or interest, it's how the movie makers went showing that. Nothing more. Now in the book, all he uses to describe her is spiders, spiders, spiders which is frequently alluded to in the movie. Now there may be a deeper meaning, but I think it's really how she decided to mold herself, if she's going to be catching kids, she could be the best intellectual predator. And spiders are that. I think it was probably a conscious decision of hers to act and be a spider to fulfill her plans, and the descriptions of her reflect that choice. Finally, when you referenced with the void calling, there is something like that in the book. When Coraline is travelling between worlds and leaving, the author describes something evil, and much, much older than the other mother. I know that isn't a lot to work with, but could this be the void calling to the beldam? Hope this helps for your quest for the secrets of Coraline.

Looking at how many keys there are I the draw and around the house, it doesn't add up. As a suggestion, the other keys could be other door ways to the Belldams world, or even different worlds. What if the whole house was like a corridor. Each one used with the correct *magic* key leads to another world. Also, what would happen if they cut down the wall where the door is? My theory is that it's not the door using magic, it's the key(s). If you cut down the wall then rebuilt it with the SAME door but a different lock, it wouldn't work yet if you recreate it ANYWHERE in time and space and put the correct key hole in, it works.

+Alex Bouffard Unless if they don't know about the other worlds. Or even they are trying to cover something up. If they possibly *do* know about these worlds imagine what the Belldam could do to it. You wouldn't think there is only one other world. If there is another world (which there is cos of the movie, lol) then there must be more.

I meant to comment this on a previous video but couldn’t remember which one. If you go back to the beginning of the movie when the mom goes to cut the wall paper to open the door, if you pause it fast enough, you can see the tunnel but almost as it appeared when it was web-like and not colorful. It isn’t that much noticeable because when the door opened all you see is brick. I feel like at this moment, you can somewhat tell the Beldam is lacking in a lot of power from years of not having another soul and has to use brick to cover it up from her mom seeing it. In my opinion, when coraline began showing interest in what’s behind the door, that’s what began to fuel the other world and give it the necessary amount of energy required to mimic her own.

A few questions about the void wanting to fill its self, would it want more than just the Beldam? what if hypothetically coralline didn't left the door open and void opened it for the parents to find.Could coraline's mother have been influenced by the void to find the right key for the right door? If what you is true about the void being the true enemy, exactly how much control does the beldam actually have in it?

i have three questions: 1. who would have sewed the buttons onto the beldam? 2. if the well is the portal, where does it lead to in the other world? when coraline was walking around, she looked for the well, but couldn't find it. when coraline threw the pebble, the beldam's hand and blanket and key in, where in the other world did it end up? 3. if the theory that you has does exist with the beldam being the original settler of ashland, why does the extent of the other world go throughout the town? why does it just stop and turn into a world filled with nothing? coraline states that it's a "small world" but can't the beldam make it bigger?

1. that's a very good question. 2. in one of his previous videos he theorized that the well portal maybe leads through the moon in the other world symbolized by similarities with the moon being overshadowed by a button and the lid being placed over the well. 3. as the cat said in the movie, the other world is only made up of what the beldam thinks will impress the child and i think the beldam wants the child to stay in the house and close to her. makes sense with the theory that the magic energy in the other world gets depleted as time goes on. so the beldam will want to save as much as possible and not squander on filling the whole world up with what the child won't even see.

I think that the Beldam may be obsessed with spiders is hidden in one of the last scenes. When the Beldam tries to trap Coraline in the room that turns into a spider web, the cat claws her button eyes out so she cant see (or maybe she couldnt see to begin with since the buttons are sewn into the eyes which would make the person blind) so since she cant see she waits for Coraline to move, causing a chain reaction in the spider web that tells the Beldam exactly where Coraline is without having to see her. It was as if Coraline was a fly and the Beldam was a SPIDER. Like prey and predator. I think that the Beldam was blind even with the button eyes because in a previous video you talked about the children going blind when she sewd the buttons into their eyes so they couldn't see what was happening in the (other) world around them. Maybe all she could do was use her other senses other than sight since she had the buttons for eyes. In this video you talked about the moon being her "eye" that she lost from sewing the buttons in. If thats correct then i think she can see only when the moon is uncovered by the button. She can also use sound to hear where Coraline is which is why she was still able to "stare" at her. (Im going a bit in detail and this was pretty long so ill end it here)

The triangle stone that you can see through is a witches stone A.K.A hag stone or adder stone. The author is from northern Germany. In norther Germany there are actually lots of round glassy stone with naturally occurring holes in the middle. It is commonly believed they protect people from witches, hence the name. It is believed that through the stone you can see faeries, (invisible things, fallen fairies/spirits (Faerie also mean invisible world)). However in the movie they created them wierdly, and that's not in the original "kid's" story. I believe if you look at where the author is from you can find different, and creepy stories, that played into his. There is a whole lot of background you can find. That could definitely make this more creepier. This was originally made for his own children :P.

I and my sister know who the boy is in the painting and its a funny nod to one of Tim Burton's books lol The kid in the painting is called Oyster Boy and he is from a book of Tim Burton's story's previous to this movies existence :) Its a great book that came out a couple of years before Coraline and it even had other characters stories such as the Staring Girl and Matchstick Girl :D Oyster Boy's story ends a bit sad in the book though.

The painting was always there ever since the beldam's ownership of the Pink Palac. There is a frame in the movie in the other world of the painting of the blue boy happy with ice cream I agree with BATTMan with the" it being her former son" part. Anyway, she changes the painting in her world from sad to happy in an attempt to soothe her pain of being away from her son. When it turns out that isn't enough to satisfy her pain she replaces the thought of him with an actual child but ends up running into a problem with needing more magic. In an attempt to keep the magic supply going she tries to sew buttons onto the eyes of the pioneer girl thinking she would stay she same energetic, kind child. The Pioneer girl ends up dying and the Beldam moved on to the next victim knowing it will have to be a similar cycle.

This might sound dumb, but here's what I think: I think the beldam had a child who was board with her taste of fun and killed himself, which left the other mother in a depressing anger. So she committed suicide to be with her son, but ended up in a house instead. She thought the wide warp would become a area. And he parents sold the house, and decided to invite a family of 3 to live there without knowing about the door. When coraline gets inside overnight, but does not in the book. I think it's because she's cracking codes with the wrong answer's. She's learning the wrong lessons. I personally think the other world is a metaphor of boring fun family's, and putting boring family's lives in a void of fun. It craves coraline so she can rip the sheet of paper to reveal the secret. It proves what bugs did to control the mice to lure the cat. Then: There's coraline. Coraline is trying to leave the world so she can come back and become one with the buttons. So does that mean coralines the villain? No. No it does not. But! It confirms the other mother is a beggar, and wants coraline to stay a few minutes longer so the layer builds up. She makes arachnidphobia, and entomophobia to bring in musophobia. She collects phobias of the animals she mainly uses to scare coraline at the end of the timeline so she can leave and be board again. The other mother is tired of coraline. She is mad at her for not having fun. Shes furious about it being all a dream that coraline had. So she enslaves mice with the sawdust, leave the body of the bland object behind, grabs the buttons, and then shares the fun of it with coraline. Jesus hogs redemption. And the other mother is an unholy figure to lure children. And people are saying: " XxgachaoreosXx animations and other things. You are a blind inbacile! " Well people people say the slapstick fun of the serious troubleshooter is a safe drug that children accidentally use to get lured into traps. Wanna know why? The buttons in the people's eyes. Not to mention that she is grabbing the belongings of the children. Not the eyes, not the fun, not the magic. Coralines docile protection. She despises coraline for not wanting to stay forever. And leaves the other mother in a way she can ignore the pain. But before she can numb it, she has to confess she wanted to stay before she wanted to leave. But rather, a hide she can't tan to intimidate the fun, and controll it like a puppet. She has autophobia. She wants coraline to shred the betrayal. She is done with it. She is craving every second of it. Boom! Wrapped like a Christmas gift!

What about if all the kids are related somehow. Giving the fact that Wybies grandmother gave her the will to move in when Wybie early states that the grandmother doesn't let kids move in. This can maybe just be random, but it seems so on time and matches up with your theory's. With the web and how Coraline falls down it, gets stuck, and makes vibrations causing the beldam to hear her, what if that's her connection to the real world? When Coraline is exploring in the living room, the doll knows where to got at the right time, maybe because it sees through the eyes, but she can see outside of the places she made, and the hand later on doesn't have buttons, so the hand can tell where it is going due to the vibrations everything around it is making. The "web" can also explain why she has so much control over the real world. She possibly marked it somehow, leaving a trace of her everywhere.
