Here is the transcript of the animation
There is no denying that cortisone reduces pain and swelling. Because of that a lot of cortisone shots have been given to help people healing from joint injuries. But just because you get immediate pain relief doesn’t mean it’s helps your joint heal.
A recent analysis of studies on thousands of individuals with joint pain, particularly tennis elbow, showed that cortisone shots, did in fact reduce pain immediately. However, when they examined individuals 6 months later, they found that those with cortisone shots had a lower rate of full recovery and were 67% more likely to have a relapse of the injury. How is that possible?
To understand it you have to know more about cortisone.
Cortisone is a corticosteroid. Its produced naturally in the body via the adrenal cortex (kidneys). If you’re familiar with cortisol aka the stress hormone, it works similarly.
You see, when your body is in a stressful situation, this hormone is released. It works like this, you want to get sugar to your brain - the most important thing. So the hormone, stimulates the breakdown of fat, protein and carbs into useable energy int eh blood. That means your blood glucose levels rise. It also suppresses other activities that aren’t vital in that immediate stressful situation, like the immune system. And that’s the main role of a cortisone shot - it’s as an immune suppressant aka inflammatory.
So, you can use it medically to cure problems with immune response - like
asthma
rhematoid diseases
bell’s palsy
spinaly chord injuries
dermatalogic conditions
The problem is that the they are best used as a short term solution.
Think about it, you don’t want your body filled with stress hormones long term because, there are side effects to what we associate with having high stress levels. Namely:
mood swings and sleep disturbances
hypoglycemia
decrease in the bodies natural corticosteroid production
decreased bone density
fat atrophy.
Fat atrophy probably sounds good, except when it occurs at the point of a cortisone injection.
In the end, there are somethings you would not use cortisone for - like
rotator cuff disease
Shoulder pain - like adhesive capsulitis
spinal injuries like cervical radiculopathy
knee osteoarthritis
Of course, with that said, the science does point to cortisone helping with things like:
lumber radiculopathy, plantar fasciatis, and morton’s neuroma.
So there you have it, Cortisone, is not the cure all treatment it was once thought to be. Know though that while it helps with some things, it can help with temporary pain relief - and well, it might decrease long term recovery. So if you’re an athlete or someone with a random tendon issue, you might want to think twice about getting cortisone. But, that’s what the doctors are for. Let them help you decide if it’s right for you

I was looking for more information since I got one in my shoulder today after X-rays and MRI showed adhesive capsulitis (bursitis) I do have to do physical therapy and will do all exercises to make sure I recover fully. Thanks for this excellent video. I wanted to know how long does it take to kick in 😅 I had it this morning and it’s 3:30pm and still waiting ⏰

I just got it in both knees because of runners knee. But he stressed over and over that it will help the pain, but not the problem. And that the lack of pain will only help me do the treatment exercises comfortably. If I don't stretch, it will be back. After watching this video, I think I have a great doctor! :-)

I've had two rounds of injections in my lower back. I will deal with the pain. Yes , the injections brought relief to my lower back however it is made my legs extremely weak and they hurt when I walk. It took a month just to be able to kneel down without getting jelly legged. Now I am 3 months post second round of shots and I still hurt and now I experience muscle cramps and extreme fatigue and my lower extremities. Before the shots I only had pain. I wish I had never gotten the shots.

When you are in terrible pain, you don't really give a crap about 6 months later. It's easy to say take a more natural approach when you are not the one in pain. If you can deal with the pain do not get cortisone though.

It is the best medication in many cases, not all. Knee osteoarthritis in 4th state is usually a good candidate every three months. But every casa is different. There is now arthromed, if you can afford it.

I received a cortisone shot in my knee for pain. That night, I didn't sleep and my knee throbbed all night. The next day it was bruised about three inches around the site of the injection. There was a small pinprick where the needle went in. Over the next few weeks, the bruising radiated out and surrounded my kneecap/knee area. The bruising was circular and extended out about six inches around on both sides. There was bruising beyond that six inch circle, and the bruises radiated out like striations towards the sides of my leg and trying to go around the back of the knee. The pinprick started opening and turning into a scab that was the size of a pencil eraser; eventually the scab grew bigger and bigger and was about the 3" across the knee. My knee throbbed and there were days I could barely walk on it. It felt like it was going to explode from the inside, out - so much pressure. The knee was hypersensitive and I could not stand to have even a puff of air on it. At night I didn't sleep from the pain, and I developed a severe issue above the kneecap which swelled and was extremely tender, to the point I couldn't stand to have a sheet over it at night. I literally thought I was going to go crazy from lack of sleep and being exhausted. Went back to the doctor, who said "Yes, it's an allergic reaction!" and took no further action. She sent me on my way with advice to let it heal on it's own. The healing process took another four weeks; so I've had this for almost 12 weeks and it is just now starting to heal, with the scab decreasing and the pain getting better. I would encourage people to consider carefully before getting a cortisone shot - what's in it? What are the risks? How can it be treated if you severely react? etc etc....! I've had other shots in the past with no reaction. My doctor could not/would not explain why it happened; and had no treatment for it. What was in the injection she gave me? Did it come from the Wuhan Lab in China, or the SecondHandQuality Lab in Mexico? I'll never know. Now I'm scared to death to get ***any*** shot for ***any*** reason.

Took cortisone for IBD (too) often, it only cures the symptones and gives some sweat attacks. Also the doctors told me it isn't too good but it was the only choice. I am not much of a fan of it and hope i'll never need it again. Thanks for the video 👍

There a video with a surgeon that says cortisone damages the cartilage and tendons too. I saw nothing about this in the video. I’ve had a cortisone shot in my shoulder and my knee and both helped a lot but after a couple years it’s back. Now I’m afraid to get more because this doctor says it damages internally. Is this true or not?

I got my second shot today, I didn’t know have this information before this. I do have a question tho, what about the people that do get the shot and also continue to do physical therapy, stretches, spine decompression and other methods? I feel that people who do get the shot, tend to be overly confident in there abilities which cause them to have more pain in the future.

A lot of injuries happen due to muscle/strength imbalances/weaknesses and poor diet. A cortisol shot is not going to correct the need to balance and strengthen your muscles while eating whole food so your body can heal itself. In my ten years of serious back injuries, I'm not finding that a vegan diet with no oil will highly increases your healing ability and blood circulation.

Yes. Had two shots in early October 2018. My dumbass doc put me on Propranalol (which is great), not thinking for a second that it could be because of injecting a fucking stress hormone into your system. I hear it lets up after 3-4 months. I fucking hope it does...

I'm 4.5 months out and much better but not fully recovered. I had a panic attack in December so intense that gave me acid reflux and digestion issues as well as mild "Cushings" swelling on my brow. Got off the propranolol at 3.5 months and was able to deal with my anxiety without it. Unnatural depression ended sometime around 3 months. Everyone gets better. The worst cases take 2-3 years, but everyone recovers.

I volunteer at a orthopedic practice and see a lot of Cortisone injections given to patients. The physician at the practice emphasizes that steroid injections are not intended to be a cure by any means, but allows people to live without pain short term. He highly recommends physical therapy after an injection so that the person can strengthen the muscles at the area, and hopefully reduce the onset of pain returning.
