A KZfaqr by the name Cosmonaut Variety Hour made a video for his "Worst Superhero Movie Ever Made" series where he looked at Batman v Superman. In his video he looks at Man of Steel and Batman v Superman and explains why he thinks they suck. But he misrepresents and misunderstands several things in both movies. So I wanted to address some of these.

have to agree with cosmonaut on the war criminal stance. 90% of the world would have Batman's view on Superman. A space alien who could topple the very fabric of the world shows up randomly and brings massive destruction with him. Normal people would be terrified.

Yeah maybe they were, but then they also see Superman save lives that would've been lost without him, he perform feats that no human could do to save lives. Don't you think that would change people's mind or at least reconsider their opinion about him. There is literally a montage of him performing the impossible all the while saving lives. And also don't you think it is likely that people saw Superman as someone who stopped aliens from destroying their world and terraforming it into a planet where humans can't survive.

Well the problem marcus had is that the Snyder interpretation of the characters were flawed and that is were most of his criticism comes with. Maybe if these characters weren't dc it could make sense, but the problem is Snyder doesn't do dc justice. Marcus just doesn't like man of steel or bvs from the start. However some of these problems seem to be fixed in the Snyder cut of justice league and shows the potential that could've been with the Snyder verse.

Exactly. Yes Superman is just learning to be his main self, but there are things that he has always inherently been. He has always been nice and he wouldn’t do something petty like destroy a dude’s truck. Would he get mad and emotional? Yes, but he wouldn’t go that far because he knows that’s wrong. He was not saying MoS is OBJECTIVELY long, he was saying its length isn't JUSTIFIED given the plot and development of the film. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the quote from Snyder about Batman being raped in prison, to me that’s the most damning piece of evidence. It’s clear to me that if Snyder is considering putting that in his movie to make it dark and gritty, then he’s not doing it to provide an interesting take on the character, he’s doing it to be edgy and it’s tasteless in my opinion. I like most of your points and I don’t 100% agree with Marcus’s video either, but that interview shows me Snyder’s intentions with these movies and that’s why I can’t enjoy them.

Snyder is very bad at verbally expressing himself in public, he took that quote back and often takes criticism into account (his cut justice league is much less dark and gritty than b v s, he eliminated the lois x batman plotline from his plan) it's not the only one of his quotes where he says something w very colloquial language that gives the wrong his point. he was never gonna make batman get raped, in fact nothing even close to that level of brutality happens in any of his movies, they're edgy and gritty but when u think abt it nothing near that scale happens, he said (specially noticable if u read the full quote) that as a fuck u to the course marvel movies (and in consequence comic book movies) where taking, where nothing is consequential and anything mildly dramatic is played for jokes, and shit with how Whedon fucked jsl maybe he wasnt that wrong in wanting to make away with all that. Sadly he expressed his distaste for the marvel formula in the most brain dead way possible...

@rickblaine9670
@rickblaine9670 3 жыл бұрын
Marcus' definitely in a bit of a nitpicking mode in that video, but he's not entirely wrong. Especially about Batman. The no kill rule is not an optional for his character, it's not something you can take away and then take back in. Batman does not kill because he's this far from turning into the Joker. One single act of gratuitous brutality would be more than enough to send him over the edge, forever, and that's part of why he's so damn awesome. EVERY NIGHT he puts himself in the perfect condition to lose his sanity and end up in a state worse than death, and yet he does it anyway, because he knows it's the right thing to do. So yeah, you can make him fail, you can turn him into an old wreck of a man, you can subvert almost everything about him. But not the no kill rule. Superman himself said this perfectly in Kingdom Come: "At the end of the day, when you take everything away from the Batman, you're left with someone who doesn't want to see anybody die." That's pretty much it. And I'm sorry, but it's just something that Zack did not get. About the rest... I do think that Man of Steel is a pretty boring movie. Not because of any specific narrative choice. Those, I mostly get. I just think it's weirdly written and paced, which makes it boring to me. BvS, on the other hand, is just too overcrowded, and that's unfortunately a big problem. Had it been just a Superman movie with Luthor and Doomsday as the villains, it would've been much better. Batman and the JL have been forced in (the former a bit more elegantly than the latter), and it shows.

@jbone3606
@jbone3606 3 жыл бұрын
Ok, so about Batman killing in this movie: that’s the point. Batman should not be killing people. You seem to be knowledgeable about Batman, so I’m sure your familiar with Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, one of the primary influences of BvS. In TDKR (the comic version, they change it in the TDKR animated movie) Batman uses a gun to kill a member of the mutant gang who is holding a child, and then he later breaks a firearm in front of the mutant gang. This is a subplot in the comic not everyone notices, Batman’s relationship with killing. Bruce is trying to hold onto the man he used to be, including his no killing rule, and he’s gone so far into this idea that he still holds onto his no gun policy despite literally using a gun to kill somebody earlier. Later in the story, in the tunnel with Joker, Batman essentially asks “how many have I killed by letting you (Joker) live”, and then proceeds to literally break the jokers neck. While at first it appears that Batman only paralyzed the Joker and the Joker somehow snapped his own neck the rest of the way to lull himself, on closer inspection we can uncover the truth. Following Batman snapping Joker’s neck, the Joker’s text bubbles are in the same grey which Batman used in his internal monologues. Batman is so desperate to hold onto his old rules that he literally denies killing the joker, internally making a story in which the joker killed himself. Now let’s take this into BvS. The two Batman’s are very similar, both are older, angrier men who are coming off of the loss of a robin. BvS Batman has adopted a similar killing rule, where he justifies his kills through “oh, I just shot the car and it blew up, not my problem”. And then, when the moment arrives, and Batman is about to murder an innocent man, Superman calls out for his mother, and Batman has the cathartic realization that he is no better than joe chill, and that there is no way he can justify this kill. However, Batman’s character arc is not complete. Although he has backed away from outright murder, he still has no issue killing indirectly (or at least, what he considers indirect). It is not until Superman sacrifices himself to save humanity that Batman resolves his existential crisis and determines that humanity is worth fighting for that he stops this indirect killing and rediscovers his old values. In fact, the final scene on Batman is Batman NOT marking Lex Luthor, representing his symbolic rejection of the indirect killing and the ways he justified it. So yes, Batman should not kill, unless the movie is about why Batman should not kill, as this movie is. Is it hard to see Batman this way? Yes. It is. But that does not make it bad. In fact, it’s this struggle which I find so inspiring about the movie. Like Batman, we all fail. We all abandon what makes us who we are and what we fight for. However, despite our failures, our losses, and our mistakes, we can redeem ourselves and fight to make the world a better place.

@@jbone3606 and @Bus Guys… I get all of that, but there’s a problem. A couple of them, actually. The first is that, as I said, you can’t make Batman kill on a regular basis without him going insane immediately afterwards. That’s just who he is. In the Injustice issue where Superman dreams about how Batman could’ve killed the Joker, Batman does in fact do just that, but then he IMMEDIATELY turns himself in. Why? Because he knows he has to secure himself before the thought of killing again even reaches the backdoor of his mind. He’s nuts, guys, and he knows it. That’s the point. I’m sure you all know the “if I go down into that place” speech from Under the Red Hood. And even in Miller’s case: I like your take on the Joker neck breaking thing, but even in such a scenario, the fact would be that Batman distorted his own perception of reality to “cover up” this ONE (arguably justified) murder. He did it, but in his mind he didn’t. That means Miller is aware of the no kill rule and how important it is for Bruce’s character, so he’s breaking it in a smart way that doesn’t break the character as a result. In a way that makes Bruce kill (ONCE) but also not lose his respect for the sanctity of life (not to mention his respect for his own already quite messy mental health). The point with Snyder is that he doesn’t make Batman’s killings a plot point. He doesn’t seem to think it’s even important. Try and watch the movie a bit more carefully, and listen to the interviews. The branding is a plot point, which gets referenced in the “fever” speech in the Cave and in the final scene with Luthor. But the killing is not. The point of the movie is not that Batman should never kill, it is that he should never be cruel. There’s a difference. When asked why his Batman kills, Zack did not use the argument you used with me up here. He did not say “it’s his arc” (which still wouldn’t have justified it, because again, this Bruce kills on a regular basis and yet has not turned into a Batman who Laughs-ish psycho: things don’t add up). He simply made excuses and tried to justify it as indirect killing, thus implicitly stating that he did want to make him kill, but he also didn’t want to piss off the fans too much, so he made it indirect. I mean, look at his other heroes. Superman pushes a guy through four brick walls. Aquaman impales an enemy from behind. Wonder Woman turns the bank terrorists’ brains into jelly, not to mention she does the same to Roose Bolton’s entire body. Zack makes his heroes kill because, in his worldview, it wouldn’t be believable if they didn’t. And I can even excuse it in many cases, I can get behind the fact that he mostly makes it for the rule of cool. But not in Batman’s case. So yeah, that’s pretty much it. And it seems quite evident to me by simply listening to him when he talks about it. Have you ever heard his “wake the f**k up, you think your heroes never lied to America” rant? He wants to be realistic, and he thinks that, if superheroes - even the kindest ones - actually existed in the real world, they would kill. Plain and simple.

That was the point of the movie, after 20yrs in Gotham he has failed, he has lived long enough to become the villain, but not long enough to realise it yet, he’s still in denial. By seeing a Batman that breaks his rule, we see why it’s so important, rather than just telling us why. In the end he regains his faith in humanity and promises to redeem himself. It honestly doesn’t get more hopeful than that.

It wasn't even out of character for Superman. He will and has killed powerful villains when it became clear there was just no other option. Hell, in the comics he killed Zod, Ursa, and Non in a much more cold and calculated manner. He exposed them to Kryptonite and watched them slowly succumb to Kryptonite poisoning. He also killed Doomsday and has no qualms about killing Darkseid. Superman's "no kill" rule only really applies to his human/Earth-based enemies who he can subdue and capture non-lethally in countless ways. Him killing Zod, a dangerous, rampaging force hell-bent on killing everyone on Earth doesn't violate any rule.

To be honest there's a lot of people that don't understand BvS. I think the sad part about this movie is that it's biggest flaw isn't even in the movie. The title. The entire advertising around it and even the fucking title made it seem like the fight between Superman and Batman was the main point of the movie (it wasn't). I think if the movie was just called "DC's Dawn of Justice" and the advertising was less focused on the fight between Bats and Supes then it would've had a better reception.

Both Chris Terrio the screenwriter and Zack Snyder hated the title because they knew, like you said, it sent the wrong impression. Why are we defending these movies in the first place? I think so few people have the ability to critique media from the perspective that it’s fictional, and someone (or multiple someones) made a decision for everything in the final product. Instead, most people argue and defend things from the perspective that everything had to happen for in-universe reasons -a universe that is *fictional *. CVH criticizes the choice to write and direct the final battle as chaotic and lacking in stakes, and you counter with “how is this Superman’s fault.” Superman isn’t real. These are characters and narrative devices written by real characters and nothing is off the table.

I know that there's been a bunch of controversy with the DCEU being scrapped, but I really didn't like it and I hope that the changes result in a new universe, something like Super Frame proposed in his DCCU pitches (check them out if you haven't seen them). Feels more for comic book people in that variety you get just like comic books. You can't try to have a consistent tone between movies like Batman and Shazam in the future. I get the intention of finding out clark is just as human as anybody else but you gotta atleast emphasize more on it other than giving us flashbacks of the Wayne's death. Or atleast fix the goddamn script "save my mom, save martha shes in danger i love her" or some shit like that. Give more reasons why bruce gave in to that decision to not kill clark. Because HIS mindset is all even if theres 1% chance superman is an enemy they have to take it as an absolute must. In no fucking way a sudden mentioning of your mom is gonna fuck up your goal

What you're saying is just plot convince. Not something a dying man would say on the verge of death. Besides if he really does know batmans trauma and exploit it, why not say it earlier and let him break down earlier and tell him its my mom bruce. Or did superman planned to get bodied just to tell him martha? Although i can see your point at the end of your comment, but i can see it as : *Save my mother, save martha *WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME *Its his mothers name Or they could've put the line "my mother has been taken by luther batman help blah blah blah" or something like that so that martha scene would make sense along with my suggested save my mother save martha. Also, that scene could've just not happened in the first place. Either fly around try to convince bruce and not go near him if he really DOES not want any trouble with bruce instead of pushing him around and shit Or He doesnt need bruces help. @@BeardedWolfKing Clark doesn't know that Bruce still had trauma. Look at it this way: simply saying "save my mother" wouldn't work, for reasons others have said already, but also because it doesn't provide any helpful information. Especially when in the same breath these people praise Michael Keaton's turn. My ears perked up when Cosmonaut said Snyder didn't understand Batman because Batfleck killed people. What? Michael Keaton's Batman didn't? If I recall correctly Keaton's Batman once roasted a criminal alive using his Batmobile. Is it somehow better because Keaton would smirk when he killed someone? What kind of a psychopath... Anyway, Keaton's Batmobile also had machine guns so I don't get why Affleck's shouldn't.
