You should never compare yourself to others, as the mantra goes, and it equally applies to runners especially couch to 5K runners (and also youtube content creators). Obviously competitive runners are excluded from such a saying, but for the majority of runners out there, especially those starting out on their couch to 5k journey, remember the reasons for running. Enjoyment should be right at the top of the list.
These thoughts were gathered on a fartlek run on the day I had over 100 subscribers; big thank you to all my subscribers. It has been an incredible journey so far! And I really appreciate all your input to date. It got my thinking about the nature of perceived competition with other running channels on youtube that also started in 2020. I do believe elements of competition can be a healthy affair, but with the other youtube running channels they have become part of a family and they can provide and express thoughts and ideas in ways that I do not (and hopefully vice versa).
The only person you should compare yourself to is you and probably your previous performances. Even then you may have to switch to age graded comparisons. This will help relax you, stop you from overdoing the training and injuring yourself. Naturally some runners live for the competition, even if they are not winning anything or only fighting over your finishing place. But don't miss out on simply enjoying running.
