I had a hip replacement a couple of months ago (after more than 2.5 years of waiting for surgery). Was religiously doing the exercises, I was provided, & everything was progressing well. Stopped using my cane in / around home but would have it handy for activities I knew would possibly fatigue my leg. About two weeks ago, I resort back to full time use of the cane due to extreme knee pain. I came across your videos and let there be light!!! I have been doing your suggested ‘butt’ exercises and they are making an immense difference. I have a ways to go but the knee pain & swelling are getting better. I cannot thank you enough for your advice / videos! Truly, thank you so very much! 🇨🇦

Thank you for this. I started running and just like you said, I got way too excited and felt good and had to run more than my knees could handle. After 3 days of running, noticed my knee (particularly bursa) was swelling and could not run for a few days. I tried to do whatever leg stretches I could find but it did not go away at all. I then decided to run again after 6 days of resting and while it was still hurting, I only run about half the mileage that I used to do on those 3 days and also running every other day. A week after, my swelling is almost gone. Now I can’t wait to run again and would gradually increase my mileage as advised. Thank you Dr.

I can walk 50 miles with a 12kg pack and be absolutely fine but if I run for 20 minutes I get pain just where you describe that lasts several weeks. It's been like this for years. Dr Dave thank you!! This massage immediately relieved tenderness in my knee that I’ve not been able to treat before! I have adhered to your previous advice of “resting and elevating” my swollen knees (I play a lot of basketball and have had to ACL replacements) I am also strengthening Glutes per your recommendation too. I may have agitated my pes Ans after starting incline board (toes down) squats and have paused those. Hamstring curls don’t seem to affect my knee pain so I have added (Nordic curls). Thank you!

Amazing information. Thank you for helping me finally figure out (one of) the problems with my knee! I suffered a groin strain after horse riding after many years of not doing any (I overdid it). The groin strain cleared up after a few weeks, but 6 months later I still have a tight hamstring on one side and pain/swelling around the inner knee area. Yoga and stretching just made the condition worse. Can you share the link to the video where you explain the treatment procedure?

Can the repetitive "pounding" from split stepping in tennis or pickleball cause this bursa problem? My soreness feels like a bone bruise from repetitive pounding over 2-3 hours. Not a problem at all when playing but several hours later/day after, it's sore. Based on the bursa location, it sounds like I have arthritis or a lot of inner knee ligament inflammation as it's up a little higher than you're showing the bursa to be. In the past, this "soreness" has subsided after a day or two. Thanks for your video. It's excellent!

So the pes anserine bursae is so superficial that we can literally feel it when we lightly press and it is tender? I might have finally found my problem after watching a ton of video on pes anserine bursitis. You said that pressure can cause inflammation of this bursae. For me I had really bad fluid retention few years ago when I was on chemo. My knees could not even bend for hours. I am thinking it could be the pressure of the fluids that stayed in the knees that caused my problem. After that I always suffer from stiff knees and even now the pes anserine area of both knees are tender when i lightly pressed on them. I hope to overcome this problem. At least i have a bit more clue now. Thanks.

Thank you for this Doc! I spent the last two months in walking boot on my left foot. When I got out of the boot I started riding a stationary bike about 20-30 min, 4x a week. Last week I was sitting up in bed and I pulled my right knee up to my chest so I could scratch my foot. I immediately heard a lot of loud, loud cracking and popping. The next day my knee was sore. Been sore for about a week now, with additional pain on the inside of my thigh. I won't be able to see my Dr. for 6 weeks due to a hectic work schedule, but im thinking I have pes anserine. Do you feel like thats a safe assumption? I don't feel much tender pain when I press on the pes anserine area, but I do feel pain on the inside of my knee, the back of my knee, and the inside of my thigh when I walk. I've been wearing a brace, and icing 4-5 times a day, plus ibuprofen. I can walk, I go for about a 10-15 min walk in my brace every morning without much issue. Luckily I work from home, so I'm off my feet the rest of the day. Sorry this is so long! Any input is greatly appreciated. My only concern is that it doesn't seem to be healing much. Is this a slow healing injury? Thank you!!

@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeremy, sorry to hear about your knee situation :-( This does not sound like pes anserine bursitis...usually there is tenderness and swelling right on the pes anserine bursa. It also tends to come on gradually rather than suddenly. This is more likely a tibial shift for a meniscus problem. You can learn about the tibial shift here: “How To Fix Inner Knee Pain In 2 Minutes” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oax8oLhlv669hmg.html And learn about meniscus problems here: "Knee Meniscus Help" kzfaq.info/sun/PLJVIPiFvv1mZ9Vh4eRH3UlmMeqOUtB-6a

so glad I found your channel. I'm in my 50's, walk dogs daily and hike daily approx. 2-4hrs and sometimes longer. been doing this for over 10yrs so not a new activity. recently inside of knee hurts when stepping up, or walking uphill. sometimes the entire knee but more recently this inside of right knee. I do not notice swelling so not sure if it is arthritis, or even post menopause symptoms. I'm not in enough pain to see a Dr. and would like to try strengthening first. would these exercises still be a safe bet?

Hey Doc, Thanks for the video - I work as a cater waiter as a day job, and a lot of my work is carrying trays and heavier things up and down stairs over and over and over. About 6 months ago, I experienced knee pain after a particularly bad day at work - I got an MRI and it showed a very slight MCL sprain, and some Pes Anserine Bursitis. I did PT for a few months and ultimately got a coritisone shot in the pen anserine, and the pain went away completely. Last week I was going up and down stairs and the pain came back - I stopped doing the PT regularly other than the stretches about 3 months ago, and now I have a milder pain/discomfort than before, but I can’t afford to get another MRI. It’s worst at the end of the day when I’m going to bed - a soreness or almost rash-like (no visible rash, just that kind of sensitive discomfort) sensitivity around the pes anserine, as well as about 2 inches above it on the medial side of my leg, both on the top, and bottom side of the knee. There’s also some groin muscle soreness. I’ve told my boss I can’t do stairs or heavy lifting for a while. There is some discomfort when I walk, but not real pain usually. Does this sound like it’s still pes anserine? I was just going to go back to my PT exercises at home and then if it doesn’t clear up in a month or two try to bite the cost and get another shot so that I can do more aggressive strength training to build up the muscles in the area. Thoughts?
@andrewgombas
@andrewgombas 9 ай бұрын
Both times, there was very minimal visible swelling, which made it hard to diagnose.
@andrewgombas
@andrewgombas 9 ай бұрын
Sorry - to clarify - the additional discomfort above the bursa was about two inches above the kneecap on the inside of my leg, not above the Pes Anserine which would put it on the knee - based on your description of the muscles involved, it seems like it's maybe two of the muscles tying to the bursa (on the outside medial and bottom medial part of my leg)

Hey thank you for this ! I have a knee bursitis since 3 weeks ( i had my bursitis just by walking outside , i didnt walk a long distance) I still feel pain when im fully kneeling but i can walk more than 2 miles without it hurting me but i still feel the stiffness. I tried your exercice with the pinguin foot postures and im doing streching exercices, and i feel like it's getting better gradually . I'm working as a model , and sometimes i have to wear tiny shoes just for a few minutes and then I can remove them and then i have to wear them again and then i can remove them do you think it can worsen my situation or my tendons if i just work for a day ? Thank you in advance!
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ruben, that's great that you are getting better gradually. You'll have to be the judge on whether the shoes are hurting you for the amount of time you wear them. You might be able to get better that way, but if you're not making progress then you'll have to try something else. Usually strengthening glutes helps with knee bursitis. You should make sure you're doing that. “Top 5 Glute Muscle Exercises For Knee Pain” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hL6Uds2Fl7fYenU.html

Hey Ridima! yes the bursa is visible on an MRI, but that typically doesn't get you very far. You've got to treat the root problem that is inflaming the bursa. Make sure you look at your muscle imbalances and see if that is the problem you need to fix.

Hey Nasir! Great question! You've likely got a muscle imbalance in your hips and legs where your glutes are relatively weak and to your quads and inner thigh muscles. You may have to spend some time bringing the glutes up in their strength before you work on your other leg muscles. Conventional deadlifts. Here's a video showing you how to use your glutes properly during deadlifts: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a7eKZsKFu7C9j2Q.html

@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Great question Martha! Absolutely yes, you can get bursitis after a complete knee replacement. They don't replace the bursa, it's likely still there and there's a high probability you're irritating it if you've had a knee replacement. Usually the underlying chronic problem that leads to severe knee arthritis and bursitis problems in the knees is glute weakness. We've got a video coming this week or next with specific exercises for Pes Anserine Bursitis, but in the meantime here's a video that will benefit you: “Top 5 Glute Muscle Exercises For Knee Pain” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hL6Uds2Fl7fYenU.html

Can it be bursitis even if it's not painful to touch but certain movements make it hurt? ( Squats, putting socks / shoes on, sometimes even non weightbearing flexion hurts ) Basically wondering if I've bursitis or some tendon problems around the area. Of course the pain could come from the joint itself (which I doubt, since the pain clearly feels directly on the pes anserine region rather than in the knee joint).
