As a CS player, I was eager to try out the new 10 year late follow up on CSGO, called CS2.
There is lots of new interesting things going on with graphics that definitely change the gameplay, which is great.
But also new reverb, changed mixes and attenuations.
For the good - and worse. Let's talk about it here.

Source 2 uses Steam Audio. It has a lot more of the HRTF modeled sounds, like in Half Life Alyx. And like that game, the entire map gets a raycasting reverb calculated, ad well as occlusion, so it's actually reverb based on the area you're in and the location of the sound itself.

I think the HRTF audio is too extreme, personally. I have compared it in fmod (which supports Steam Audio) to Resonance Audio's HRTF. Steam Audio is a lot more extreme with the directionality, but it also sounds a lot more phasey and weird

Funny if it's based on raycasting, as it clearly doesn't add reverb in lots of corners and other places, but adds it to bigger places like under tunnels or

@@CujoSound to me it seems like it makes an IR for each "zone" and blends between them? I know the engine is capable of fully HRTF reverb too, but I don't think they're using it here.

Im thinking a lot will change. This limited release very much seems like a test and they will watch closely how everybody responds to the new smoke and other things. An issue with CS, like with many other games, are their player base hardcore conservatism and refusal of anything new, so this will be quite interesting to follow.

Sounds are very muffled and not crispy enough IMO. I really hope they add more settings to the audio.

Absolutely - its like all the muffling effects they have and especially the occlusion filters (added after this video) are super steep curves, way to fast and "realistic" it makes a very unpleasant audio experience. I need to compare this recording to the new inferno patch they just put out.

in audio configuration is better stereo o 5.1 in cs2?

Depends entirely on your sound setup and it's ability to play back more than stereo. If it can, then set it to that

Reverb based on the environment sounds right. But what you're that close the the audio source, the reverb shouldn't be that obvious right? It's like you're hear everything in 3rd person. And the foot steps, it's also unrealistic if footsteps can be that loud, loud enough to be echoing

Totally, it's like it doesn't take direct feed into account before reverb. Which is pretty much equivalent to taking the natural delay out of the equation

CS footsteps are loud yes, but it's so rooted in the gameplay and has always been that way so it's fine IMO. But sure it could feed less into the reverb bus maybe? But might be they'll just stick out more and sound too dry then?

@@skalla1000 I think the steps are louder than in regular CSGO, but obviously they are "loud" overall because its part of gameplay :) Interesting note about how it feeds into the reverb, could be you are right, that because of the slight increase in loudness, it pushes the bus too hard.

Should I use Dolby Atmos for CS2?

Naa. probably won't help you much - unless you have a Dolby Atmos to Binaural converter in headphones or similar - that might help out, but else 5.1 or 7.1 would be far be enough or even stereo, panning and filtering within the game works quite well I think- do check out the various options in the audio menu, I've played with numerous players who don't seem to fully understand what the settings are.

Ok Got it, but for regular virtual 5.1 and 7.1 I heard that it's not gonna work well on CS2 becuase CS2 uses "simulated surround sound in stereo" and using headphone companie's virtual surround on top of that would make you harder to tell where sounds come from in game since cs2 doesn't have the 5.1 surround option like csgo does. @@CujoSound

Just wrote a long reply to this which vanished- sorry. But the game uses system output, so if you have 7.1, it will be 7.1. You have plenty of options to tweak how you want the 3D aspect to be. Adding external manipulation, is something they don't recommend, I would either - on any game. Most gamers I know who have all sorts of gizmos and setups for their audio, usually have no clue what it actually does or how it works - especially when it comes to binaural filtering thinking that this will make stereo into full surround, which it won't

I think the puerpose of virtual surround sound is to widen closed back headphone's soundstage. But if you are rocking wit an audiophile grade open back headphones wit clear & percise imaging such as the ATH R70x HD800S, or LCD GX it probably doesn't need virtual surround since the soundstage itself is already great.@@CujoSound

Got CS2 today. First the smokes, when i throw a nade on it i bearly see any diffrence, its just if u hit it exactly most of the smokes dissapear. But most of all. The sound! OMG whatashitshow. When the 3d sound came out to csgo i hated it so much, and this is just that plus muffled and bass:y ecoing. The cling clong bullets. Wow it sound horrible.

Also i feel so heavy, and the movement is not quite csgo ish but almost a little "fumly" clumpsy.

Have in mind that they changed the audio a lot since this video - I have a video, not published, from a previous build too, on Mirage - there the steps and bodys sound quite light and might nicer on hit - but sound is super different from CSGO. Technically much more realistic, but that isn't always better - like the audio uncanny valley.

At the very least, they need to cross-fade the effects of different areas. Rust also fails to do this and I dislike it

I'm sorry but how is cs 2 10 years late. Maybe 8 or 7, but no company is making a new game then immediately releasing a sequel the same year.

I hate the audio so fucking much... To me counterstrike 1.6 & Counter strike sources audio sounded much cleaner... I hate 3D positional audio garage software, I want to go back to hardware accelerated it sounds better

Yea. 3d positional sounds have always been in the Limbo between being the correct way and the future - and then always not being put in correctly or having to suffer slightly. Filters in audio are so fragile and change so much and nobody does that with a static attenuation curve or filter, it's like we are in the middle of the audio uncanny valley. It's doing its thing better than before. But it's off putting

So I dont expect you to remember, But Back in the day, We had creative sound cards way back, it was an external card in a PCI slot (Still using mine right now, I still run a Soundblaster X-FI, I prefer hardware acceleration, Over software acceleration, I want the ability to turn the software crap they are using off lol, Like they had in CSGO. Im an auidiohile, Audio quality is extremely important & I hate how CS2 Sounds muffled as hell. I wouldn't say that its off putting, IOdf say this stuff is a major downgradee, Because even REALTEK (Bare bones) Hardware acceleration built in to pretty much every motherboard sounds superior to the trash that is software accelerated position audio. Its like when I explained to a guy awhile ago about the upscaling filters like DLSS & FSR, Its software rendering garbage man... Kus back in the day we had 3 options ro render video for example, You had Hardware accelerated direct x, Hardware accelerated OPEN GL & then software rendering & every time hardware rendering beat the software, Software rendering anything over manual hardware rendering has always been absolutely terrible, I agree with you however that its better today than it was 20 years ago, But to me & my ears, Hardware acceleration was always better.

the cs2 3d sounds are so horrible theres like no bass to the shots if theyre behind a wall it sounds so bad also the game sounds like someone put a wet towel over the speakers or fucked up EQ settings

Mentioned it below, I guess you played it today as it came available to most players, it sounds very different from this first release. Not saying it sounds good at all, the occlusion settings and others things are way too harsh for my taste.
