Her live performance of Ball and Chain at the Monterey Pop Festival 1967 is MUST SEE - there is a video labeled "Janis Joplin - Ball and Chain (sensational performance at Monterey)" - that's the one you'll want. Also, her live cover of "Summertime" is astonishing. Performed in 1969...she died in 1970. You can see she's in serious trouble, but "Summertime" has been called an "outrageously brilliant performance" - and it is.

Her live performance of Ball & Chain at the Monterrey Pop Festival is amazing. You can see Cass Elliot (of the Mamas & Papas) in the crowd get blown away by the performance.

Yes Janice died at 27 from a heroin overdose and she also had severe drinking issues...But she still managed to produce a great output of music in her 6-7 yr career that still continues to awe and inspire.. Although I've heard better live performances the vibe was hip with the pll on stage...Watch the vid for the song Ball and Chain live 1967 Monterey Pop Festival...One of the best performances in any era gere 🧐✌️🤘

Janis was truly a once in a lifetime artist. Greatest female rock singer for sure. She put 120% of her soul into every song she sang. It’s sad that she died not realizing how much her music was truly loved. There will never be another “Pearl”.

The Monterey Pop Festival where she performed 'Ball and Chain' shook the music world. 'Summertime' is my personal favorite. 'Mercedes Benz' is a wonderful soft version that I enjoyed b/c of her laughter. Enjoy exploring her music. She stands the test of time.

I grew up in the 70s and was just a kid in the 60s but I am very familiar with her music and the music of the 60s even is had already passed by the time I got into music in the early 70s. As for the song, I know in the U.S. her songs are often covered by women with husky or gritty voices on tv singing competitions like American Idol or America's Got Talent. I would assume that might be the case in the UK and the rest of Europe too.

Janis had a very difficult time growing up in Texas and I always wondered if the heartache and mistreatment she got from her high school classmates helped her develop her blues and soulfulness sound. I definitely think her low self esteem issues lead her to seek comfort in whiskey and heroin, such a damn shame. Some very talented and gifted people don’t like themselves which seems a bit counterintuitive. R.I.P. Janice.

As others have said, you need to watch her performance at Monterey of Ball and Chain. That was the Janis I remember. I saw her live in 1968 in Philadelphia and it was one of the best concerts I have ever attended.

Janis was born in Port Arthur Texas, she sang the raspy blues. Her schoolmates were G.W. Bailey of the Closer and Major Crimes fame, and Jimmy Johnson who treated her like crap and made fun of her.

A Renegade History of the United States by Thaddeus Russell is an amazing book about lower class people(slaves, prostitutes, etc.) going against social norms and changing history. Jesse Hayman owned brothels and was the dominant power in San Francisco because she was incredibly wealthy. Because of her women started walking alone and dressing less modestly.
