My parents have been married for 21 years and the only thing they constantly argue about is an incident that happened over twenty years ago when my mom supposedly shut the refrigerator door in front of my dad on purpose. Mom says she didn't and can't understand why he thinks she did. Dad will more than likely go to his grave perpetually annoyed by the offense. The man acts like she drowned the dog with how serious he takes it.

Haha that reminds me of my parents! They’ve been married for 30 years this year and the one thing my mom will not let go of is that like 28 years ago my dad washed one of her favorite shirts and it shrunk, and my dad will always jab back that my mom shrunk one of his military shirts in the wash and he had to show it to his boss to get a new one and they all laughed. I don’t think either of them will ever let go of it. 😂

It's fascinating to me how the older they got, the more often they started admitting their own faults (like saying "it's because *I* would do this, while he/she...") whereas the younger ones often blamed it on their spouse right away and defended themselves. Isn't it so cool how the older ones started reflecting on themselves more over time & shared each other's points of view? 😃

I thought I was the only one to see that. I am so jealous of my parents biggest "disagreement": which way the toilet paper roll should hang/facing up - according to dad it was one way according to mom the other way. You could always tell whether mom or dad was the last person to use the loo depending on which way the toilet paper faced. God I miss that man who died of cancer complications - I can't even begin to imagine how much his wife misses him. I distinctly remember how we; mom, dad, brother, sister and me sat around a braaivleis vuur and as my mother would walk towards the house to fetch the pap or cutlery or whatever, my dad would would say: "Dink jy nie ook ek is met die mooiste vrou in die hele wêreld getroud nie?" [Don't you agree I am married to the most beautiful woman in the world?" [Perspective: I was already pushing past forty en they were obviously older] "Dink jy nie ook ek is met die mooiste vrou in die hele wêreld getroud nie?" That's of course just one side of the toilet roll. "My man: is wonderlik" So much so that the other ladies at the office who constantly complained about their husbands started comparing their husbands to my mothers husband, by default complaining about their lot - terrible husbands. I remember my mother relating the conversation she finally had with her colleagues, paraphrasing "Well, if you keep on telling your husband how bad he is what do you expect?" My mom and dad's love story is one of the most realistic love stories is know - Realistic because no one had to be dramatic, make an ungodly proposal on a knee (dad helped mom to make her wedding dress - no fancy so called "romantic" smalch, drink poison or cry all the way for me argentina) they just love each other. The other great love story is that of my grand parents who met at my granddad's homecoming party after world war II, grand father proposed that same night to grand mother and, and well there is a reason one of seventeen grand children can now tell the story, but more of that later.

Sometimes there truly is someone who’s right and someone who’s wrong. Things that are about opinion aren’t in this category. But some other things that are based mostly or all in facts, are indeed winnable arguments and the problem is some people like the boyfriend in this story, is too stubborn or indignant to admit they’re ever wrong and doesn’t wanna debate bcuz they know they’ll look wrong, so they just close off and stay in their idiocy. This is not good as it hurts the couple and their ability to succeed in life

I feel like a number of their arguments stem from emotional labour and the fact that the women are carrying the weight of it. For the women who are "controlling" or "managing" or seem to do things better, its because they've been carrying out emotional labour since childhood whereas men often see it as optional. So yes, she will be annoyed when she has to be the one to 1) ask him to do something instead of him noticing and 2) re-do it herself because they didn't complete it at a functional/adult level (e.g. not noticing the dishes need to be done so being asked to do it but doesn't even scrape the food off first)

@Sasukerox - I feel that a lot of women who dictate to men how to do basic household chores are those who get a kick out of micromanaging. They get a thrill in exerting power in a relationship because the man is often burdened with making most of the money in the relationship and they see this as relinquishing that power. It's interesting because women expect and search for partners who will entertain the idea of providing most of the means in a relationship and someone who is stoic while seeking ways to undermine the partner that they selected (e.g controlling what they do in the household). So, yes, the man will be annoyed that the woman is controlling and attempts to hoist diametrically opposed desires on the man.
@sasukerox
@sasukerox 5 жыл бұрын
I'm sure there are women out there who have the personality type of wanting to micromanage everyone and everything, of course. But aside from those particular personalities, your idea of the gf/wife undermining the bf/husband because of money reasons is hollow and archaic. Millennial women, such as myself, are working full time jobs alongside our men and we are being paid enough to be self-sufficient. The issue of emotional labour becoming more prominent these days is because Today's woman is tired of juggling a career and then coming home to a guy who does not notice or appreciate or actively participate in the unseen labour that is necessary in sustaining social relationships + a functional family. This is not to point all the fingers at men; emotional labour starts in childhood and it has been seen as girl's work to effortlessly care about other people when a) it is not effortless and b) boys should and do care about other people, too.

“It’s better if I do it, it’s just better if I do it.” I say this to him every time he tries to help me 🤣 that’s funny.

I advise people a lot with life and relationships and I try to tell people, relationships can make it if you're different, if you're similar and a lot of combinations in between. Relationships end when we end them. A long relationship only requires that both people stay... Time does the rest. I mean this as to say, a lot of people feel like a happy relationship automatically means that it will be long lasting with two people that are nuts about each other, and vice versa. But it's more like writing a book, all it takes to complete it is that you don't stop writing it until it's done, if you stopped it then obviously you have not completed the book. Being "Healthy and happy" is not the same, nor is it guaranteed with a long relationship. The Good The Bad and everything in between is up to whatever people do with the time we stay together in relationships. A healthy relationship takes that you respect each other, work on things or maintain it really, communicate, grow, compromise, accept each other, and much more. These couples prove that working on things does not always mean that whatever you worked on magically disappears and when it doesn't disappear you should leave. We're not all going to think exactly alike. Different formulas work for different relationships. But if you want it, work at it. We shouldn't focus on "when should we break up" so much. Hopefully I articulated that to where others could understand clearly lol

My parents have been married for 30 years now and every now and then both of them make punchlines and are so sarcastic. It's adorable.

Seeing the couples that have been married 40+ years that have what My husband I think are bad arguments is really refreshing. Gives me a lot of hope lol. It really is all about how the two of you handle those situations.

the 41 year old mariage lol reminds me of my parents. they were married for 25 years broke up divorced got back together married again. they argue about money, family, my upbringing...... the last thing they argued about while i was there was about a family chrismas trip to the states. my dad wants to go my mother and i not so much. we think of our pets and work and my dad is just go with the flow lets go and then we are like hold on a minute what about our jobs and pets.

That's also my dad. He wants to move my family out of the country and we think of our pets and friends and things we cannot bring across the world. I really don't want to leave. :(

It's cool to see the longer couples were together, the kinder they were to each other.
