I've always hated that "happy wife, happy life"/"listen to your husband" bullcrap. Both should listen to and consult one another.

@jay fine Married 30 years and I hate "happy wife, happy life", because women aren't stupid. They realize that the higher they set the bar on happiness, the more you will do for less. It is extremely hard for anyone to resist the temptation, to inflate the value of their happiness for their own gain. It is a certain recipe for disaster. The happy spouse, happy house is far better, because if you both focus on prioritizing the happiness of the other, and resisting the temptation to be the greediest in the relationship, that is an easy route to certain success.

It's really interesting how the younger couples are told "the woman is always right" and the older couples were told "the man is always right". I think it showcases how the world and views on marriage can change so rapidly.

The Worst advice came from my mother; "You HAVE to maintain your individuality and control over your own destiny, because marriages sometimes fail and then you will have to take care of yourself." She has been married 3 times. I killed the single, or "individual" me, A LONG time ago, can't remember where I buried the body, and have never missed it. My wife and I have been very happily married 21 years. To my mothers credit, after my wife and I had been married for 12 or 13 years, my mother said it was time for her to stop giving us advice and start taking it.

The younger couples seemed to get advice sexist towards men, while the older couples got sexist advice towards the women. Neither is good.
@zaboomafooba
@zaboomafooba 6 жыл бұрын
Chopperman - There's no sexism towards men. That's not accurate and the advice they gave to the younger couples actually reinforces sexist stereotypes about women. The stuff about how they should always agree with the wife and not make her unhappy is patronizing to the wife, and says that they should treat her like a stereotype and never actually respectfully engage with what she thinks. People, especially men, often say "always listen to her" or "she's always right" because of sexist stereotypes that women nag and have nothing valuable to say. That's not good. :-/

@zaboomafooba
@zaboomafooba 6 жыл бұрын
rissie for life - There is no institutional racism against white people. You're not making much of an argument here. White people aren't made to hate the color of their skin or the texture of their hair because societal standards position whiteness as ugly....rather, whiteness is held as the standard of beauty here and internationally. White people don't face systematic economic discrimination on the basis of race. White people aren't popularly stereotyped as lazy, violent, or dangerous. White people have an overwhelming representation and power in our systems of government, and also have overwhelming diverse and positive representation in media. White people are not subjected to the levels brutality that people of color have suffered for centuries. Tell me again how they "struggle too". Tell me: What do white people experience that compares to the racism that people of color face? Tell me what this "racism" against white people looks like. & then consider how trivial it actually is.
@zaboomafooba
@zaboomafooba 6 жыл бұрын
rissie for life - You said, "even groups that seem to be 'on top' struggle too." Struggle, sure. But not against institutional racism. White people have not had to struggle against disenfranchisement, or fight for their rights on the basis of race. If any white person has had to fight for their rights, it's on the basis of something other than whiteness: gender, sexuality, class, disability. Listen, everyone has a struggle, but white people do not struggle against systemic, institutional racism. You just don't face structural disadvantages in America for being white.

I'm not married. But for me personally the worst advice I've gotten was from my best friend's mother. She said, "It's your responsibility as a wife to always please your man. You need to satisfy him at least three times a week. Even when I'm busy, I make sure to at least give him a hand." Although some of you may agree with this, the way she said it was sexist. Hell, it is sexist. Both partners should be sexually satisfied. You're not marrying someone just to please them. And I would hope having sex isn't the main priority or treated like a duty or chore.

After I got married, my grandma basically tells me regularly to not tell my husband when I’m upset with him because he works hard and I shouldn’t make him feel bad. I lasted 4 months and exploded. I realized that when I do that I just suffer and then he eventually is suffering too because I’m visibly unhappy, and he has no idea why. That was the worst advice ever. I was very depressed because it was a pretty big thing that I was holding onto. He did feel bad when I finally told him I was upset with one of his decisions but better to share than let resentment grow which is what I was doing for 4 months....

Never go to bed angry sort out your issues because keeping it in just fosters resentment. Communicate that cannot be said enough, be flexible, cherish your spouse like a flower , never call each other names because people tend to remember the bad things said versus good , have hobbies to keep you content, don't involve family and friends on your marital problems seek professional counsel instead, because your close ones would be bias and they will low key start hating your spouse even after the issues are squashed, work as a team especially when you start having children so that one spouse doesn't feel like he pr she is doing all the work, having children can cause issues in a marriage believe it or not... Lessons learned from eight years of marriage

The old couples were advised that the man should assert dominance while the new couples are advised that the men should keep their wives happy. Times have changed so much, the power just moved to the other end of the spectrum, no in-between.

BTS John John cook. Exactly, men are supposed to trick their wives in the early years. By always saying that their wives are right and making sure their wives are happy and setting the traps for a certain number of years. Once the trap has been securely set, then the wives always have to listen and obey the husband and just fall to their knees in their husband's presence. Solid plan, very solid plan.

It’s interesting that the older couples got advice about the man being dominant, and the younger generally got advice about the woman being dominant.

A piece of advice I got from my High School art teacher is to never have two different bank accounts. Every person he knew that did that got divorced. I think it’s a good piece advice, maybe? Idk Ah, 2:25 thank you for clarifying
