Dive into another key phase of our Cozy Log Home DIY series! In Episode 5, we take on the task of laying the electrical groundwork for our cabin. Using a Caterpillar 303 mini excavator equipped with a 12-inch bucket, we carefully carve out tidy trenches for a power conduit essential for our 400 amp power service. This episode not only advances our construction but also introduces you to a crucial figure in our project-our expert electrician.
Watch as he shares critical electrical insights that are vital for a safe and efficient power setup. His professional advice coupled with our precision excavation shows just how much meticulous planning goes into a self-sustained home. I also emphasize the importance of cleanliness during the build process, ensuring our site remains pristine and organized.
Don't miss out on these foundational steps towards achieving a fully powered log home. Subscribe to Wranglerstar and hit the bell icon for notifications on our latest uploads as we continue building our dream off-grid retreat!

My father was a commercial union electrician in Canada. I used to work there as well. If I didn't clean up after myself, I would be handed the keys to the building and a push broom on my weekend and told to go clean the entire floor we were working on. Also, if I marked a wall while installing anything, he would have me go to the painter and borrow a roller and paint and fix it. I used to think how hard he was on me was unnecessary. Now, as a man, my work always stands out from the rest. I'm happy he instilled a work ethic in me at a young age.

You do excellent work, Cody. Using two 22.5s instead of one 45 elbow is a trick that my dad taught me back in the 80s. He was a fire sprinkler fitter for 30 years. I drove dump truck for a few years, and too often I received vague info on where to dump a load of rock, so nice job, sir. 👍 A job superintendent once jokingly told me, if you're ever lost in the woods, just pound a stake in the ground and a dump truck will show up to run it over. Cheers.

I'm an electrical contractor and you are 100% correct. I have to drill into the men to clean up and they do think they are too good to clean. I even had a man tell me he does not sweep. If you don't sweep, go home. He swept up. Do a good cleanup and they will always will call you back.

Worked excavation for a while and I live in the northwest, would always get complaints from electricians that our power trench depth would be short by like 2 inches or so (roughly 24 to 28 inches required) yet I’ve seen countless times when a rain comes down the night before completely filling the trench with water so they just install the pipe right above the water level making it even less then a foot below ground simply because they didn’t want to get dirty pumping out the water from the trench. Then when final inspection comes it would fail because they didn’t install it to proper depth. 🤦‍♂️

Good control over the bucket. I’m sorry for telling a story during your video. Please forgive me. My wife’s stepfather used to run a big excavator for the city. One day a guy was in a deep trench, and it caved in on him, completely covering him a yard or two deep. Frank used his excavator to exactly dig down to the top of the man’s head, then hand dug. The city awarded him a lifesaving award. He was very proud of that, for the rest of his life. We, also, were proud of his expertise. Sorry for misdirecting your video for a second.
