Join Wranglerstar in this unique exploration of carpentry tools through the ages in Episode 6 of our Cozy Log Home DIY series. This episode features a show-and-tell of some of my most cherished vintage timber framing tools, including a historic Whites Slick from 1837 and a beloved Robert Sorby 1.5" timber framing chisel that I used to build a timber-framed cabin.
Delve into the finesse of traditional woodworking as I cover my collection of Japanese pull saws, showcasing the precision and artistry behind these essential tools. Midway through the episode, I demonstrate the meticulous process of sharpening framing chisels using diamond stones, guided by Caroline’s steady hand and expertise.
The highlight of our episode is when I use the newly sharpened chisel to precisely let in a Douglas Fir 2x6 into a 6x6 PT timber, which forms the foundation for our cozy cabin’s 400 amp power service base that I timber framed. This practical demonstration not only showcases the effectiveness of well-maintained tools but also bridges the gap between traditional and modern carpentry techniques.
Don’t miss this deep dive into the tools that build our homes. Subscribe and hit the bell icon to stay updated with our journey as we continue to blend old-world craftsmanship with modern building methods in our Cozy Log Home DIY series!

They may be vintage, but they sure do the job well... and, as you present with the worm-drive circ-saw, using them in combination with the modern tools is a perfect match. Also, the "THUNK" of the first setting of the new crossbrace into the uprights was SO satisfying.

Another great video - love seeing how the videos and channel have evolved over the past decade. Combining the past and present was a great idea for the video. Did I miss why you're building the cabin? Guest house? Awhile back you mentioned wanting to host workshops and events, maybe a good spot to house other tubers for collaborations too. If I remember right, the erosion issue was holding back plans to build a 2nd home for Jack or SL in the future - that would be just back from the cabin site? Cool to see the homestead coming along and thanks for letting us join the journey.

I read a book a while back called hybrid woodworking. Basically it’s saying sometime traditional tools are better and sometimes modern power tools are better. I prefer using a hand plane instead of sandpaper for example because of the air quality in my garage without the sanding dust.

Your dad’s carpenters square test for prospective employees makes me think of my own indication of how much experience somebody had in the trades. If they can’t properly coil up an extension cord without making it look like some kind of rats nest then they probably don’t have very much experience. BTW You’re one of my favorite creators on KZfaq! Keep up the good work

When I was just a14 year old my first part time job was as yard assistant and store clerk at a local tool and building supply shop. I used to just work on Saturdays and school holidays and my first duty everyday was to put out a display of materials by the entrance which included a giant display chisel to show that we had tools for sale as well . This giant chisel was approximately 4and a half feet in length including the handle and the blade was about 4 inches wide by about 3/4 inch thick and 3 feet long. The handle was formed with an octagonal shape and the end was given a bullnose form. It was never really intended to be used as a chisel, just as an eye catching advertising item that could be placed outside in all weather conditions, so it was never given a sharp edge or hardened because it was so ungainly and impossible to handle. All it ever did was get carried in and out to be displayed or secured overnight.

A good example of modern carpentry in home making with a mix of modern and vintage style hand tools in current day is Japanese and Korean home builders . Its a proven way of building I think and really shows how hand tools like plains and hand saws and chisels are just as needed by a modern carpenter today as they have been years ago .

I am kinda like you. I like the old fangled classic tools. I know how to use them. Maybe not well. But I know how to use them. And if something is worth doing? It's worth doing right! :) Or at least trying to do it right! Ha-ha! ;) Japanese saws are the best! Saws and blades. They have good steel. That holds an edge. I am grateful to have several antique wood working tools from my Father and Grandfather. By the way. I use Ballistol all the time. Great stuff. Found out about Ballistol watching another little tiny YT channel. Hickok 45! Ha-ha! There is just something about doing some things the old school way. Very satisfying. As usual, thanks for sharing. :) Jim Gillespie Reno, NV.
