Filipino soldiers are trained as mountain warriors..most especially in the Cordillera region, in the mountains of Visayas & Mindanao. My grandfather was an officer of the Philippine Navy and a Korean War Veteran. He was deployed on Philippine Expeditionary Forces To Korea (PEFTOK). He was a member of the 19th Battallion Combat Team. They call themselves the bloodhounds. My grandpa loves telling the stories about their expeditions, the best and worst moments during the war. He explained in detail his memories with the koreans and the canadians who fought along side him. He was a forward observer and commanded all the mortars. He used to tell how he frequntly blew up enemy positions or everytime the Chinese makes a guard tower or when they did patrols. He was almost killed in a mortar fire when a bunker blew up beside him. Thank God he survived and his was able to share his war stories with his 30 grandchildren.

All of these were never taught in our history lessons, it is only through social media that we now are learning about the heroism of our Philippine soldiers. What the Filipinos did is a simple "mind game" that beat the Chinese. It is what we called in the Philippines "Kanya-Kanyang Discarte" or "Discarte" for short. "Maraming paraan" which means "lots of alternatives" are in the minds of Filipinos in times of needs also implies in this situation. Also, "Bagyo ka lang, Pinoy kami" meaning "You are just a natural calamity, but we are Filipinos" is a mantra among Filipinos when there is a big natural disaster that destroyed everything they owned. In short.....The Filipinos just don't give up "mostly" on anything!

This kind of situation can be compared to having elite soldiers Vs ordinary soldiers. This does not not mean the Filipino soldiers in yultong are all elite fighters but have the character, toughness & skills within them to fight the horde of enemies. The real weapon is the character and mental toughness not the mere weapon they have. Arming any person with weapons does not mean they can fight effectively and efficiently.

Hello again, Craig Hollman! something that may interest you; the day after the 10th Battalion was pulled off Yultong, the battalion was assigned to reinforce the British 29th Infantry Brigade in the Battle of Imjin. The Recon Company was reinforced with Centurion tanks of the 8th Hussars as they tried to fight their way to the surrounded and trapped 1st Glosters. My Grand Uncle, who was a 2nd Lieutenant with the 10th back then, told me that the officers and men of the 10th BCT would joke that they should add "Royal" to the Battalion's name so they wouldn't look out of place beside the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, the Royal Irish Rifles, and the King's Royal Irish Hussars,

Hello Craig Hollman! To put this into perspective, the 10th BCT was heavily reinforced, and the largest of the Philippine Battalions after WW2. Their TO&E was actually 12-15% of the total available troop strength of the AFP back then. They had 3 rifle companies, a tank company( this was turned into a heavy weapons company as the 10th's tanks had been lost prior to the 10th's arrival in Korea), an artillery battery, a heavy recon company (with 6 M24 Chafees), a H&H Company, a Replacement Company.

I was happy to address them in their mess hall, aptly named after their "Medal of Honor" mistah, Captain Conrado B. Yap, who had died bravely in Korea when he tried to rescue his men from enemy fire, and recover the bodies of those who had fallen. "Yap Hall" commemorates this fearless soldier who hailed from Zambales. He was the commanding officer of a Tank Company and died on April 22, 1951, at Yulton Hill in Korea. I forgot to tell the cadets in the course of my rambling speech that Captain Yap had literally "saved" my life years after he had died in battle. The tale goes this way: I had gone to Fordham University in New York City on a Fulbright-Smith Mundt scholarship, for the first year living on campus in the Bronx in Dealy Hall, then Martyrs’ Court. This was in 1952-53. My American classmates and I used to go drinking in the nearby Webster’s Bar, or at Greasy John’s under the Elevated. One night, having a few beers in the Webster Bar, we found the place full of rough, tough fellows, some of them truckers - the latter the noisiest and rowdiest of the bunch. One of my classmates (a student from Pennsylvania) lost his temper and bellowed at the unruly group of truck drivers, "Hey! Can you guys tone it down? Give us a break!" This obviously was the wrong thing to do, because eight of those burly fellows got up and made for us, growling that they’d beat us smart-ass college swells to a pulp - and by the looks of those muscles, they could do it. Andy, Ray and this nervous Saluyot backed up into a corner, determined to do or die - probably die. Just then, the biggest of the lot peered more closely at me, then asked: "Where you from, fellow?" I replied, "The Philippines!" He laughed, turned to his companions, and roared: "Loosen up, you guys. The fight’s over. I’m not fighting this Filipino - they may be small but they’re the scrap-piest and bravest on earth!" To use that old bromide, you could have knocked me down that night with a feather. He put an arm around me, and told us, "let us buy you a drink!" Then he recounted: "I was a grunt in South Korea. And by golly, the Chinese had us pinned down, throwing all that artillery at us. And there I was, with a bunch of my platoon, cowering in a hole, scared out of our wits. Then, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked up, and there was this little Filipino captain, cool as you please, standing up unafraid amidst all that stuff blowing up, and saying: "Get up, soldier - let’s go! Don’t you know there’s a war on?" "And, with a wink, he turned around and started running towards the Chinese lines, waving his own men forward, gesturing with his automatic - and to my amazement, there we were, too, springing to our feet and pounding after him towards the Chinese positions - our entire gaddamed platoon, heck, our entire company!" "When we had taken the hill, this Filipino guy grins at me, shakes my hand and says, "See? We did it!" Then he started walking away. "What’s your name, sir?" I called after him. He casually yelled back, "The name is Yap, just Yap from the Philippines!" The trucker fervently declared: "I’ll never forget him!" And by golly, never should we. It’s men like Yap who give us back our pride. Remind us that there’s a "war" on, but with courage, persistence, and grit, we can win it. www.philstar.com/.../2005/03/09/269635/pma-spirit... CTTO.

Here in Egypt we do have a somewhat similar battle that happened during the October war/Yom Kippur war The battle of Ismailia However westerners for some reason just always ignore it This battle together with the battle of Suez stalled the Israeli counter offensive on the west bank of the Suez Canal I will tell you what happened but first, some background When the war broke out on October 6th the Egyptians (we) managed to cross the canal and destroy the Bar lev line in a matter of 6 hours and advanced like 14 or 16 km into occupied Sinai Btw one of my relatives was unfortunately martyred during the crossing, may he rest in peace Anyway we defeated an Israeli counter attack on October 7th However our Syrian allies offensive, although very successfull at the beginning, completely fell apart later on. The Syrians asked us to make an offensive, and we attempted an one on October 14th but it was a disaster Just as Chief of staff, colonel General, Saad Al Shazly expected In fact Shazly was completely against such an offensive because this will bring our troops our of the range of our Anti air missiles and weapons And it seems he was right This offensive left a gap between the 2nd army in the north and the 3rd army in the south The Israelis rushed in their best troops and attacked through They won the battle of the Chinese farm but at a high cost By October 18th the Israelis were just south of the city of Ismailia Little did they know though that what laid ahead was a disaster The Israelis under Arial Sharon had: 1 armoured division 2 armoured brigades 1 paratrooper Brigade With alot of air supprot We Egyptians only had 1 paratrooper Brigade and 2 commando battalions with no aircraft The attack began on the 18th with air supprot but the vastly outnumbered Egyptian commandos held back the Israeli assualt October 19th, the fighting continued But again and again the Israelis were repelled despite the air support and the strength of Israeli paratroopers and armoured vehicles On the 20th, the Israelis renewed the Aerial bombardment. They also used Napalm to burn and demoralize our troops Sharon's division attacked against with the rest of his troops but the Egyptian Sai'qa (commandos) pushed them back yet again The attacks on the 21st weren't very successful either The Israelis assaulted once again with air and Artillery supprot but Egyptian paratroopers pushed them back and repelled them Meanwhile there was a conflict within the Israeli command as major generals Shmuel Gonen and Chaim Bar lev wanted Sharon to withdraw troops to the east bank to widen the corridor that connected the Israeli forces on the western side with the rest of Israeli front but he ignored On the night of 21st and 22nd Egyptian artillery harassed the Israelis On the 22nd Israeli aircraft bombarded the Egyptians, and on 10:00 AM the assault was renewed At Mount Mariam/Jebel Mariam, which both sides have been fighting over for the whole battle, was attacked but the Egyptian paratroopers there repulsed them On 1:00 PM an Israeli paratrooper company attacked Abu Atwa without scouting ahead but due to this they were ambushed and annihilated These two failed attacked resulted in the Israelis suffering over 50 casualties and lost 4 tanks Meanwhile, 2 Israeli tank companies supported by Mechanized infantry and air support attacked Nefisha which both sides have been fighting over for the whole battle as well. However the Commando battalion in charge of Nefisha repelled them, in this assault the Israelis lost 3 tanks, 2 half tracks and unknown but certainly large number of men. The Egyptian Sa'iqa lost 24 men killed and 42 wounded. By afternoon the Egyptians launched a counter attack that pushed back the Israelis The Israeli push towards Ismailia was a effectively routed This decisive victory was extremely important It prevented the Israelis form taking Ismailia and encircling the 2nd army Moreover it, together with the battle of Suez that happened on October 24th and 25th stalled the Israeli offensive I really suggest you read more in this extremely important yet often overlooked battle of the Yom Kippur war/October war Greetings from Egypt 🇪🇬👋 "Battle of Ismailia - Wikipedia" en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ismailia

Those were the times that filipino patriotism is at its highest. Those soldiers would fight to the death to give honor to their nation (edit: since the nation was nearing or have just gotten its independence). I dont know about now, maybe its not patriotism but some other kind of motivation. So to say those were the times were the filipino armies were really deadly and scary that even a historical ww2 general Douglas Mcarthur praised them. I dont know about now though. That was decades ago. Filipinos are different nowadays. Thats why we filipinos should learn to re-establish our lost patriotic fervor if we want to regain what our ancestors did to their enemies. To be feared and respected. Love your country, rise in power and change the system (not join it. Lol) even if you die doing so. Do not rebel against the government. Be in it and change it yourselves. (Obviously 🤷)That is, if you guys still want our independence as a nation and not a colony of any foreign nations again in years to come.
