Crash Team Racing Gets Rebuilt with 60 FPS Support and True Widescreen on PSX

15 күн бұрынI love retro games and I love PS1 games so let's talk about the Best PS1 Games of all time...in my opinion! and now Crash Team Racing got a brand new fan "mod" (in reality almost all of the code has been rewritten from the ground up) giving the game full 60 frame per second support as well as Widescreen on PS1 support! You need Duckstation for this and I do have a Duckstation tutorial on the channel if you need it! Its retro game collecting for a modern era! This WILL work on MiSTer FPGA with the MiSTer FPGA overclocked core but not at a locked 60 fps in my testing. But lets commence with a retro video game review of Crash Team Racing!

This is awesome, but this is also why people think the PS1 has aged so well technically >_< To me, this is what a Dreamcast port of CTR could have been.

This is insane, actually looks like an emulated 2nd gen N64 game from Rare! Kudos to the devs and Duckstation for delivering such awesome visual enhancements.

@@overwatch761 TBF, CTR has always looked great. It's one of the very few PS1 games with software texture filtering. Naughty dog were wizards with the PS1.

Great mod for one of the greatest arcade-style racers of all time! Have you had a chance to test it on any handheld devices yet (e.g. Steam Deck, Anbernic handhelds, Retroid handhelds, etc)?

This was probably the first game I ever 100%ed (or nearly did anyway). CTR Nitro-fueled wasn't too bad, but it just didn't have quite the same vibe as the PSX original. Looking forward to trying this!

I didn't play this for the first time till the late 00's when a flatmate brought it over. It's a little Mario Kart 64-lite for me but still fun in multiplayer. I haven't used emulation in ages thought Duckstation could boost the framerate on most games or force them into widescreen. I guess it breaks some things or the game logic is fixed to a certain framerate so modding the ISO is necessary.

I have to admit that I've barely played this game. I just always played the N64 kart racers back in the day and stuck to Ridge Racer on PS1. I really need to give Crash Team Racing a shot.

An awesome mod for sure... Cannot wait the result of their CTR decomp project, so many potential with CTR, its way more challenging than Mario Kart for sure. Almost forgot, CTR also one of the game that become the staple of most played game in almost entire PS1 cafe in my country in the late 90s to early 00s beside winning eleven (japanese version of PES), Nascar Rumble, and Tekken 3.

@@VideoGameEsoterica yeah, I just knew it when DSOGaming write an article about this Widescreen + 60 fps mod with a link to their youtube channel and looking at their older video they apparently also made decompilation of CTR and this mod just a side project from that decompilation results.

Try getting the Overclocked PSX core, though IIRC it can only get to 200% CPU atm.

Yes we have made Oxide playable as a separate mod, but not on this specific release. It will be on a future update with all the enhancements included.

IIRC Mister PSX core can only overclock up to 2x CPU atm. Maybe once they can overclock up to 4x.

PAL compatibility is something we're working on, but it's gotta be a long time before then. If you have a PAL functionality you'd like to port to NTSC, it's actually probably easier to do that instead. 😅

@@RedFlameFox I've actually been working on language selector mod (similar to PAL lang menu) for NTSC, possibly even adding more language options. Currently it's only for text, but hopefully we can port the PAL voices soon too.

@@RedFlameFox Another fun fact, the PAL language texts are already packed in NTSC version too and you can actually use a Gameshark to change the language on boot, even with this 60 FPS widescreen mod.

Unfortunately AFAIK, none of the CFW can overclock the internal emulated PS1 CPU yet (not the same overclocking the PSP/PSV/PS3 themselves). The only semi-official hardware that can do it is PS2 with POPStarter emulator, but you also still need custom overclock fix/plugin by Hugopocked. Maybe with more games being framerate unlocked, hopefully PS homebrew developers will be interested in finally overclocking the emulations on PS1 or maybe PS2 games even.

A bit disappointing that it is Duckstation only. Thus it's just semi-PS1. Would be great if they could have it running on (overclocked) HW.

@@BERNDSBG Haven't heard of it, but feel free to try it out! We do know for a fact that this does "run" on an unmodded PS1, just wont hit full speed unless the ps1 is overclocked. There's nothing that ties it to emulators
