Brad Roberts of Crash Test Dummies didn't want to be the group's singer, but his big bass voice ended up being their hallmark. From his Songfacts interview, he talks about how it happened. www.songfacts.com/blog/interv...

Brad could do narrations, voice overs, tell stories, sing; he's just got that voice that's calming and easy to listen to.

Leo Kottke has a similarly deep voice. He is an immensely talented guitarist who also writes songs but performs solo, so he eventually had to just bite the bullet and sing. And Leo HATED his own voice; he said he sounded like "geese farts on a muggy day", but he's actually very pleasant to listen to. Same with Brad; they both have wonderful voices, a joy to listen to.

This video is so dang cool. It's really neat to hear little deep dives like these.

When I think of Brad, Richard Sterban (Oak Ridge Boys) and Josh Turner also come to mind.

Brad Roberts' voice is not at all crap! He has inspired me to duplicate his voice whenever I sing the first four songs off of his GSHF album and from there, began to learn other songs and have managed to SOUND like other artists! He even gave me the courage to hear my OWN voice, because I TOO, thought my voice was crap! Turns out, Brad and I were BOTH wrong about our OWN voices! Thank you, Mr. Inspiration for helping me find my voice! Much love and stay safe!
