The car accident (s) in his past also gave the name... The birthmark on his back and the Pentecostal Church... This is a pretty accurate depiction of childhood trauma. These traumas often go on to describe, if not define, us as adults.

There are tales in medicine about how extreme trauma can shock a person so badly that their hair turns white, partially or entirely, and usually forever after. I went to a school in 5th grade that required phys ed & showering. I was very uncomfortable with stripping down to shower with the other girls, so mostly didn't, and it cost me grades and sometimes trips to the principal's office. Schools just MAKE you do this, even if it's horribly uncomfortable or embarrassing for the child. But you ask what the song means. It's about being different and how others will pounce on those who don't or can't conform. The time away from school followed by reappearance with hair that's changed color. The girl refusing to change with the other girls, which already sets her apart. But then, it turns out she probably knew she would be made fun of for the birthmarks. (The lead singer, who wrote this song, has spoken in interview how he has a birthmark at the base of his spine that was the cause of much bullying when he was in school.) The boy with the strict religious parents in an atypical religion. Again, his having to go straight home after school set him apart and set him up for scrutiny, but then the Holy Roller church his parents went to would be fodder for teasing at school. All 3 kids were what other kids would call 'weird', so perfect for targeting with abuse. The song is about that state of being different and having no way to do anything about it. And yes, it's a sad way to live. Your empathy read correctly what your logic struggled with. The video portrayed a play within a song performance. Kids who are different live their life on display, like they're on stage, and other kids act like they have the right to critique the 'different kids'. So this 'school performance' was of the lives of these 'different' kids. I believe the parents of the Accident Kid cringe briefly in the audience, but there is worse response of the Holy Roller Kid's parents, who react with disapproval & displeasure, maybe that their 'secret' is now openly public. The Holy Roller Kid certainly looked nervous seeing his parents in the audience. And that's how it is when your life is a public story, when others thoughtlessly and insensitively discuss what is for you your life. The video is an interesting interpretation of the song. Not an exact factual representation, but artistically metaphoric. I loved this band the moment I heard the first song. I have 2 of their albums, both really good.

Really resonated with me at the time it came out. The stories, we all experience the feelings that you’re like an outcast but it was about how people don’t realise the effect it has on the children growing up. No one realised. His voice is amazing, no doubt. This was an anthem for everyone who didn’t feel they fit in. Just my experience when I first heard it. Metaphors but also blatant observations. All three stories are based off the singers own experiences to some extent. The white hair reference is from a story about a boater who got to close to niagra falls. Knowing he was gonna die his hair supposedly changed to white from pure fear

I see what you’re getting at with the stories being metaphors for deeper tragedies in these kids' lives, but I have to say the song always worked really well for me just taking the stories straight up at face value - in fact I think it made it a more powerful piece. Being away from school recovering from an accident, growing up with birthmarks and being painfully self-conscious about them, and having a family with unusual religious observances that's always been part of your life but you find out seems outlandish to those around you... I think it's a really interesting story about how weirdly intense life can be for a child when even a small thing about you makes you different from the group. I also really like the band's decision to leave so much of that for the listener to pick out from between the lines. As for the video clip, I think the disapproving parents were meant to be the churchgoing parents in the third verse, who disapprove of the theatre piece on general principles but especially don't like their son up on stage portraying them. (I think the stage performance is a lovely bit of storytelling, blurring the performances with the lives of the performers, both the map and the territory.) Oh, and Weird Al Yankovic did his own version of this called "Headline News" with some stories you might recognise :)

Brad Roberts has one of my all time favourite singing voices. The depths he can hit (that make the low "Mmm" in the chorus feel kinda high) blow me away, even after decades of listening to him. The other voice I'll always love was that of the late great Chris Cornell. Both of them, in their own respective ways, touch this amazing quality that I've yet to hear again.

It's supposed to make you cry. It's beautiful. The music is amazing, the harmony between Brand and Ellen is amazing, the musicians in this band are unreal. The lyrics and the story are about kids going through being judged. By parents and by other kids. Kids who go through trauma. A girl who could be covered in birthmarks or bruises? Another child forced to go to an overly strict upbringing with parents who won't let him have friends or hang out with the other kids, you notice they come in as the play is in progress, just at their own son's part and they disapprove. He can't please them. He's being judged all the way around. Along with the gorgeous choral music and voices, it's sad. It's beautiful. You're right.

The songwriter later divulged that whenever he was asked about the intended meaning, he would be dishonest in an attempt to allow the audience more room for interpretation. For whatever reason, he was eager to avoid stomping on how people reacted to the song. According to the older Brad Roberts, he was trying for a theme of outsider children built from things he heard about as child. The second and third stories were about other kids he knew and the first is from a popular tale of a man who was survived certain death but his hair turned white.

I've been listening to this song since I was 12 and I'm about to be 41 and still listening to it, it's one of my favorites. I've never cried listening to this until I saw your reaction. It has made me grateful to have chosen a career path helping children who aren't able to move as normal developing children do and now I'm not only helping children who have physical disabilities, but I'm helping those who are deaf as well. Very interesting analogy. I always thought this song was about bullying, or kids making fun of other kids in school. When I went to school, kids picked on other kids a lot and there really wasn't any public outrage against bullying, so it was something that was pretty normal. It sounds to me like these kids were being picked on at school, especially the religious boy, because kids can be really cruel about what they don't understand.

If you look back at the video, it's divided in three just like the children of the song and it tells their stories: first the kid in the car crash, second the girl with the purple spots on her skin and third the boy not having fun in the show with the priest... the third boy being the child of that snobbish couple. It's a song about differences, how adults live them and how children can be affected by them.

In my opinion, the song purpose is to invite people on focussing on children's emotional change. There is one sentence he repeats in the three of the verses. "He/she couldn't quite explain that", as the three of the situations were meant to be explained. I mean, if the first guy was tougher he'd probably had the car crash but he wouldn't have grown white hair, so did the birthmark girl, going to the bathroom with the other girls and telling them to go fuck themselves if they tried to bully her, furthermore, the last and most important one, he would have escape from that bunch of religious psychopaths and ending who knows where. You know what I mean? I think the song invites the parents to talk to their kid, because when you try to explain something, that is the moment in witch you should realize that you have nothing to explain. Because it's not your fault if you had a car crash, it's not your fault if you have birthmarks on your skin, and it's not your fault if your parents are asshole. I mean, don't misunderstand me, not all parents are assholes, but those of the last kid... well, for being called assholes they had it comming. Love is the way❤️❤️❤️

Was interesting to hear your thoughts after first seeing your emotional reaction. Thank you. I first heard this song when it was popular in the 90s, I think I was about 8-9 years old and I just remember getting this tight feeling in my gut, the kind when something shocks you and you realise the situation is so hopeless and you can’t do anything about it...watching this brought it all back! I have since gone onto write songs myself and I always make sure I leave the listener with some hope, no matter how hopeless the situation. I think the bridge/chorus before the 3rd child verse in this song was an attempt at that. We all need hope!!! But I just so vividly remember this song as one of my earliest memories of the dissonance and confusion the lyrics/melody/chord arrangement of a song can bring. This song was well crafted to provoke our emotions, by a simple non biased story telling approach. Very powerful.

I would like to try and help you understand the point of this song since you asked. According to Brad, the lead singer, mmm mmm mmm mmm is really just a humming tune of contemplating how children are affected in various situations of daily culture and traumas. It really is deep stuff, much like his voice. My favorite song they ever did is a rarity recorded at Sacred Heart studios where I'm from here in Duluth MN. Such a simple (yet profound) song and people have such trouble interpreting it. Thank goodness the three-part structure helps, and if we imagine that the humming chorus takes the place of the singer's opinion or judgment on the individual stories, then the listeners have been invited to judge and interpret for themselves.Three children, three tragedies, three upbringings seriously damaged in three different ways. One by a random accident, one by a defect of birth but - crucially - the worst damage is inflicted by parents whose religion cut them off from the real world and was embarrassing to witness. The 'disapproving' couple are the religious ones who cannot accept their responsibility for the kid's 'damage', while the other parents rejoice that their children have survived the trauma and told the story (stopped keeping it secret) so well in the form of the school play. The message is therefore that life can be made difficult by random events or your physical health but it is far worse - and far more damaging - to inflict an absurd belief system on your children and leave them to deal with the psychological consequences.

I think, in my not-so-professional opinion, this song is about people who have unique or stigmatized involuntary qualities about them as it pertains to the judgement and ridicule of peers. For instance, while the first two kids were being judged and were in the "same boat" as shown in the video, they were also judging the boy for going to a Pentecostal Church.

Weird Al's version is amazing too, maybe not so poignant but.... still amazing.
