Volvo wins. Doors open right up. Citation's driver door is jammed and the occupant compartment is quite beat up; the Volvo's is largely intact with only very slight A pillar deformation. The occupant's heads didn't even hit anything hard in the Volvo! In the Citation, the driver's head hit the steering wheel. I think everyone would live, but the Citation occupants would be more severely hurt, maybe a concussion for the driver and possibly broken bones on both occupants. The Volvo's occupants probably could walk away with cuts and bruises. Believe it or not, both vehicles were ahead of their time on safety in the early '80s; the Citation being one of the few (I believe about 25%) of 1980 vehicles that passed the NHTSA 35 mph barrier test. But this shows the difference between "ahead of its time" and "state of the art". At that time there really was no competition for Volvo and Mercedes-Benz on safety. May 28, 2016 1:57 am
