Here's how I budget for worst-case scenario but also plan for abundance at the same time. This helps prepare your budget for a job loss, or temporary illness or family emergency. Now I also realize "worst case scenario" could actually be a LOT worse than just a job loss, but we're preparing more for the common things that would stop your budget in its tracks without much notice. My year! I lost my high paying job and have to start over. I'm scared but I have a budget. Had an emergency fund that I've used up. Got a new job and getting back on track now. Wish me luck.

When my husband passed on 11 yrs ago, I had $21,000. I didn't know how and when everything else was going to pan out. It was a few months of survival spending, trying to keep my children's lives and my own, to as normal of a level as possible, which I was able to do. Thankfully once the Life insurance policies ( I knew he had one, but he had another one from before he and I even met) which bumped our savings to live on way up, and my husband's retirement accounts were transferred to an IRA, and 8 yrs after he passing, I sold our home, moved us to a less expensive state, paid cash for a new home, with money left in the bank.... we have been doing well. During our working years, my friends and I all carried disability insurance. You never know when one might have a prolonged illness or injury. Disability insurance is a must for single folks who have only themselves for monetary support.

I tried sinking funds and a hundred category lines in my budget and I just didn't keep up with it. It was too much work! Food. House. Car. Health. Simple broad categories made it so I would actually stick to my budget.

It works really well! 👍afther this video I remodeled my exel budget a bit with the first colum with needs that subtract from my income, savings in the second colum that also subtract from income (a bit of savings go in to specific digital sinkingfunds and in real savings) 3rd colum is for wants it shows automaticly the total amount what's left I assign a bit of the money to what I would like to do that month,buying birthday gift or maybe 3, a lunch with a friend or I decide to save extra.

OMG I'm so with you on that Kate! "To each his own" but I'm the same and prefer to keep it simple. I have only a checking and savings account. No "sinking fund" accounts. I deduct my expenses from my check and the majority of the rest goes to savings or my retirement accounts. That works for me!

Paused at 9:47 to say, I also glacé over that type of budgeting too. I couldn’t manage more than 3 bank accounts at a time. I prefer the minimalist budgeting style. Thank you for breaking down the 3-6months/lifestyle savings account. I’m still on babystep 2 and I’m not sure when I will be able to start saving more money.

I occasionally work overtime, and I use part of my extra money to stock up on canned goods and non perishable household items. When money is tight its nice to know I have a few things stashed away or give to someone in need. My eyes glaze over when I hear people have 8-10 different sinking/savings accounts too. One savings account and one spreadsheet to keep track does it for me! Kaden - you stole the show today :-).

This is how we break down our budget, too. We know the dollar amount we need each month to meet necessities, the minimum we would need to live. I believe in keeping things simple. If you make the "savings" category the #1 category ( you fund this first), I don't think you need all those different sinking funds, bank accounts, etc.

This is so smart!We try to save for rainy days whenever we can…the past few months it has stormed !!We had to stay in another state for a month…we had a family emergency…and we were paying for Airbnbs and after a lot rental for an rv plus our mortgage…and now emergency dental work ..luckily we save …the person who caused all this never saves their money and because of this caused us some hardship …but I refused to bail them out this time.Why is it so many people don’t save their money but look at you to help them out ?

I use as little vacation time as possible. If I lose my job the vacation time becomes part of the pay out. Some of the sick leave may also be paid out. I have two types of emergencies planned....one where I lose my job and one where I dont. The cost per month will be different due to the health insurance premiums.

Hai Kaden! My kids are too big for you're KZfaq channel. But it's so cool you have you're own channel!!!! You're just as wise as you're mum!!! Thanks for the tips again Kate. Always nice to be reminded of the emerency funds. We have much more ensuranes we have to pay, for the house, for if you have an legal problem and have to go to court, funerals, health, etc. So that has to go in our budget to. But my kids are 10 and 14. They have no daycare. The youngest is in my school (I'm a reacher at primary school) so I can hold an eye on him. That is a blessing, because daycare is so expensive!! Thank you Kaden for sharing your blue tongue! I bet that Gatorade was really good! And thank you Kate for sharing your budgeting technique. I'm one who has to have all those lines and categories. It makes me feel like I'll have EVERYTHING I need covered when it needs to be. I'm forgetful. I need that visual reminder to cover everything. I live on disability income, AKA low fixed income. Don't have any space or funds for lifestyle. I have a couple of sinking funds because I have to make sure I have the money to pay car insurance when it's due and registration and inspection fees when they're due. I used to have more sinking funds but now I just keep track on paper--dividing up funds in bank. Interesting to hear other ways. Have been listening to and subscribed to your channel for some time. I love it!

For Kate: I agree with you so, so much about keeping it simple. I have a very simple system that I follow when it comes to saving, and budgeting in general. It works for me, and I have a good overview of where my money goes, and how much I have saved and for which purposes. No binders, no fifty different accounts, no envelopes. Just a couple of accounts, some notes on my phone and/or simple spreadsheets to keep things on track, with a basic outline of a monthly budget. And a clear list of priorities, and yes - this list does include some "extras" that I either include on a month-to-month basis, or that I save up for over a period of time. Like vacations or trips to visit family. For Kaden: Hiiiiii....I didn't know you have your own channel. I will for sure check that out! :D

Ok So yesterday I saw "Keep your eye on the prize" I think it was on insta gram - oh by the way I'm NOT to hip to (lol lol lol) that insta gram. Anyway I have been craving Burger King Sausage Croissant for a while now and as I was driving home I got in the left lane to turn into BK. THEN I remembered "Keep your eye on the prize" and I whipped out of the left lane and went home. Now I'm home drinking MORE coffee and EATING A BANANA!!!!! Well another GREAT VIDEO!!! How is the little entrepreneur doing? He is growing so fast! I use the sinking fund cash envelopes because that is what works for me. I have a few sinking funds that stay in the bank but are auto withdrawl, but I still use my budget booking and envelopes to keep track of those expenses. I have two medical bills yet and then I will be debt free, with just my regular monthly bills and I cancelled my credit card, I am using my debit card for all my purchases. I have the five months emergency fund built up,,,,but I am going to roll that money into a 401K and restart and rebuild another emergency fund. I use sinking funds to put aside monies monthly so I can pay the six month car insurance premium, annual life insurance premium, car maintenance, house maintenance and all my doctor copays. and I use the cash envelopes for grocery, pets, and gasoline consistently so I don't overspend weekly on those categories!

I use a paper/pen system in my Happy Planner every payday and I do use sinking funds with Capital One 360 banking. Years ago it was called Direct ING. We had a vacation savings account with them. So I added more accounts last spring too. I learned about sinking fund accounts on KZfaq. I even opened a checking with them and changed our direct deposits to Capital One to make it easy to transfer. Plus it gives me a debit card if there were a big emergency I could transfer the money into our checking from whatever savings account we need the money out of. We have branches here too so that makes it easy if I ever needed a branch. Online is so easy though. I just transfer money over every payday to our various sinking funds/ savings. We have several categories. We have the emergency fund for sure, plus pet expenses (all those vaccines and unexpected expenses for our 3 dogs) , auto repair, birthdays, Christmas, vacations, college expense fund for out last kid in college when random things pop up. It just makes me feel better to break it up into several accounts. Plus they give a decent interest each month.
