Kristian Kohle is one of the most sought-after Metal Producers in Europe. Starting out as a musician, Kristian has been playing, engineering and producing Rock and Metal for over 20 years.
Kohlekeller Studio, located in the middle of Germany, offers music productions and is specialized on metal and hardcore and heavy rock music since 1999. In the last ten years, they have worked with bands from all over Europe!
Kristian has been producing mainly metal, hardcore punk and rock productions in his coal cellar studio. He has worked as a music producer and sound engineer with bands such as Crematory, Powerwolf, Eskimo and more!
One of his greatest successes was in 2013, the placement of the Powerwolf album Preachers of the Night at number 1 in the German album charts. The album also reached chart positions in Switzerland, Austria, Sweden and Finland. Also, the album Revolter by the band Dymytry, which went platinum in the Czech Republic.
As a musician, Kristian founded his solo project Another Perfect Day in 2009, in which he played all the instruments himself except for the drums. The debut The Gothenburg Post Scriptum (2010) and the subsequent EP Four Songs for the Left Behind (2012) were released by Supreme Chaos Records. Another Perfect Day’s music is complex, progressive metal.
In January 2019, Kristian was the first German music producer to be invited to Nail the Mix, the largest American online audio school around the URM Academy, which was founded by music producer Joey Sturgis, as part of his production of Aborted’s Terrorvision.
In cooperation with the guitar pedal manufacturer Klirrton, he released a distortion pedal called Grindstein in 2019, which recreates the sound of 90s death metal in a modern form.

Tweak, tweak and tweak again! Unfortunately I think I bought wrong with my Blackstar ID 30 TVP... it's a good amp BUT it doesn't suit my playing... not that I'm great! I once had a tiny Roland Cube Lite which actually had a fantastic tone, just not enough BIGNESS! Should perhaps have looked at Boss Katana? 🤔

In my little bedroom studio, I use a Grossmann Audio SG Iso box with a Celestion G12M-65 Creamback. The speaker is miked by a Beyerdynamic M160 and two SM57, all in different positions and phase aligned. I run my tube amps into the SG box with a Two Notes Torpedo inserted between amp and box to be able to cut another flavor of a different speaker. After recording, I blend all four tracks or a subset of the tracks to get a great tone.

I have a XL 120W, It's a screaming demon that can easily tear apart a building :) back in the days I used to set a TC Electronic M300 in the rack slot for a slight rev and delay if needed. Sadly I don't play as much as I did, but every time I turn it back on it's a pleasure to chugga chugga. And with the single speaker Eminence too! I own also a combo mc2 (basically a combo XL) and I would really love to see how Kristian would put it in good use :)

Thank you both another wonderful discussion! I'm engaged in a bit of related research with a P.H.D. "Metalhead" neighbor friend who is creating a dual-Diezel Tube amp. We talk a lot about tone because we are actively experimenting on distortion. He is old school and this always brings him back to the V30's. I have a hypothesis that it's a duck thing. "If it walks like a duck - and quacks like a duck - it's a duck" - which translates to: it is metal because it sounds like metal. However - I'm bored with that mono sound - to me - it's like watching black and white TV. So -where else can Metal actually go - to be Next Generation? Adam Jones has ideas.. and (good vibes shout out to:) Source Audio is creating (stereo) distortions that are multi-layer and beautiful. Consider the careful thought that Dan Hawkins of "The Darkness" put into his (dual) tone. I love this stuff.. Thanks guys for these videos!

Great Interview & Information! Fun hearing were Kristian started! Back in the mid 90s My High School Band Teacher brought out an old Tascam Portastudio 01 and got hooked. My Dad brought home a 424 MKII. Fast forward to 2005. I got a Boss BR-1600. I got into the DAW game late (2016). Been learning a lot watching both you guys along with Glenn at SMG. Really trying to get the most out of My home studio. Focusrite 6i6, Ableton Live10 on a MacBookPro, Adam AudioTV7s (now I'm using My old BR-1600 with the S/PDIF into My Focusrite 6i6 for +2 inputs). Brought My old Mesa Boogie DC-5 Head out of storage & bought an Orange 1x12. Living in an apartment, My Mesa Recto 4x12 will get me evicted. But I've been diving into IR's, Amp sims & back into mic'ng up with the new 1x12. Anyhoo. Thanks for all the info you Guy's put out! 🤘🎵🎶

Kristian should create his signature Bias Peak guitar amplifier / speaker package for Metal guitar tones or realase a Amp plugin with Waves or UAD. I think of amp plugins as a backup for a real Miced up amplifier if you want to change the sound later. You run a DI on Second channel so you later can reamp and change the sound. The two channel mic / Di approach also opens up for hybrid version of guitar bass /sounds mixing between the real miced amp and the plugin amp. one thing that is boring with plugin in amps is that you don't get your own personal guitar tone that is unique for the song. Yes you can tweak alot of settings to create your own tone character but with your own real amplifier mic amp room and recording chain its going to instantly sound like your own unique guitar tone. There are small differences even between two of the same amplifier and mics. With a plugin using a preset you get exactly the same sound as everybody else using the same plugin and preset. Going your own route with Cabs and testing other spekerbrands is interesting.

5 years ago I said, a real guitar amp is awesome and the sound is different from the plugins. until I heard the amp simulation from plugin alliance! How the Engel sounds, really awesome how the plugin sounds! 👍😍 You hardly hear any difference to the original amp, i.e. hardware. In the last 3 years there has been a lot going on in the development of hardware plugins simulations - it always sounds better! 🤗 And the hardware is replaced with the plugin.

Hi Warren! Great video as always, I'm learning so much watching your channel. I know it's off the topic of this video, but did you ever publish the video about calibrating a room with a $6 microphone? I'd love to see that since I'm setting up my home studio on a tight budget and don't want to pay the same money I paid for my monitors and acoustic treatment for the equipment & room correction software.

I feel like compression is one of the tools that has the most potential to grow - I realise we have vocal rider and MV2 and other new tools, but why are so many compressors still only compressing peaks, rather than offering more tools that transparently level the signal or reduce dynamic range by adjusting at both ends of the dynamic range?

Hi Warren, I have watched tonnes of your videos and it really helped me a lot. I have learnt most things from you but there is one topic that i would love to learn from you and that it sidechain compression with plugins like Waves F6. I only how to seperate vocals from the rest of the track but i would like to know how can i use it to seperate instruments from each other, for example seperate guitars from piano and when should i use or not use it in a mix. Thank you 😊

Do you typically record guitars through DI, and then dial in the tones later by reamping, or do you dial in and commit when recording?
@KohleAudioKult

Most of the time I prefer to record with the final tone. If it feels right while playing, it mostly IS right.

To touch on the "emulate what you love" point. When I first started I made sure that I was always slightly more "in your face" than other guitar tones I would hear. As I gained more experience I put what I learned from my dad, who is an electrical engineer, into the tones to get more "power" out of the sound. To this day I will contend that an 1176 into a multiband compressor into an eq in the daw itself is the best way to make a metal guitar tone really shine. What does everybody else use for high heat rhythm guitar tracks?

oh, I think I got an idea why they are "loaded" with Celestion speakers......it might be that they have a price and contract agreement? or it might be just as you say......"just because it's some kind of standard"?....I will go with the business reason.......

“In 20 years recording I don’t think anyone has ever brought a speaker into the studio that wasn’t a Celestion”. What? No one has ever brought an EVM12L? That’s scandalous 😬
