Ingredients
1 block extra-firm tofu
1/3 cup cornstarch
pinch of salt
1/3 cup unsweetened plain soymilk
3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
2 tablespoons black sesame seeds
2 tablespoons white sesame seeds
sauce of choice for dipping
Instructions
- Wrap tofu in a clean tea towel and press out extra moisture. I recommend stacking it with a cutting board and a few heavy cans for an hour. (Or, use high-protein/super-firm tofu and skip this step.)
- Preheat oven to 450°Cut tofu into cubes or steaks.
- Set up your breading station. In one shallow dish, whisk together cornstarch and a generous pinch of salt. In another shallow dish, combine breadcrumbs, onion and garlic powder, nutritional yeast and sesame seeds. Pour some soymilk in a bowl.
- Toss your tofu pieces in cornstarch. Dunk into soymilk and then press into breadcrumbs to coat generously.
- Arrange tofu on a lined baking tray. (Optional: Spritz lightly with cooking oil.) Bake for 15-20 minutes, until breading is golden brown. Alternatively, air fry at 450°F for 10 minutes.
- Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

I’m 12 and went vegan about 8 months ago. I lost 20 pounds (I was overweight) and I look and feel so much better! So glad I found this hopefully I can make it with my mom for dinner or somethin. Looks so yummy!

This seems so crunchy and tasteful 😍 I love breaded food, so I’ll definitely try this recipe. Recently I’m kind of obsessed with tofu (I used to hate it) and you just gave me a new idea!

I made this and it was SO GOOD. I only had time to press my extra firm tofu for 30 minutes and it still turned out awesome. The tofu is plain but between the sauce and the awesome breading, it didn't matter. I can only imagine how great it would be if I'd marinated the tofu first but that would require forethought so...10/10 as is

Anyone who stumbles on this, note that if you fry in oil seeds will explode a bit violently if the heat is too high, so be careful about the temp. I use softer tofu for this for the texture if it’s fried and mix tahini with the starch as well as cooking the pieces 1 at a time in the corner of the pan to rotate them more easily and keep the coating from getting stuck to the pan. This is to get a crispy fried snack like result with a softer inside. You can also mix spices or other flavors into whatever you coat them with. I’m sure you could even possibly substitute things like tahini with peanut butter or other sticky stuff for different flavors. If you bake you can coat with things like fake butter or oils as well. It’s an interesting and sort of easy thing to mess around with, but do watch out for exploding seeds. 2 year old video, but you never know, may give someone an idea.

T Eye that's a cool idea, I press my tofu for a good hour but it never seems dense enough. Do you just freeze it and let it thaw?

Gianna Reeve yes exactly. Just toss the unopened package in the freezer, no draining necessary. That’s the only way I eat my tofu now. Dense and chewy and porous so it absorbs flavoring so well. 👍

Try freezing it for a few days then marinate and put into the fridge for two or three days. Also, try vacuum sealing the bag if you leave the tofu in the freezer for an extended period of time. I freeze more than one package in order to keep the tofu in stock. The vacuum seal keeps ice crystals from building up on your tofu. I've kept tofu in the freezer for over a month.

Tried this! These were perfect paired with the sweet chili sauce! Your recipes save my life! They are so simple, yet so delicious! First week of meal preparation 2018 & I tried these crispy sesame tofu, the fried (not) fried rice, red lentil dish & the curry chickpeas.!! All of which taste amazing! Oh my goodness, this is one of my new favorites! I made this today and it came out delicious! I put rice and brussel sprouts on the side. The only thing I did differently was add some seasoning to my panko. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!

Oh mah gah. Just made these & it was amazing. I normally hate breading things but because you were baking them, I thought I'd give 'em a try. No regrets! The only thing I did differently was that I added oil directly to the panko & gave it a mix, then breaded the tofu (I never have oil spray); worked out really well. Love your channel! :)

I was looking for a different recipe and I don't know how I got to this channel but I'm glad I did. I'm so glad you dry your tofu while being pressed between weights. I am going to make this for dinner today along with other things. That crunch was the kicker. I couldn't stop watching. This will be on today's menu because I always have tofu in the house. Just a note to let you know that I have a an air fryer with an upstairs and a downstairs. LOL I concocted grates and I can cook twice as much. I'm a new subscriber and your show is rocking already

I keep seeing everyone using the vac packed tofu. I am def gonna try that. I love the idea of sriracha mayo with it, but sweet thai chili sauce is literally my life. I could take stocks in that sauce LOL

delicious and my now favourite way to eat tofu ...... I added a generous teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to soy milk and it thickens it which helps it stick to tofu and it adds an extra dimension taste wise xxxx

Like the idea of the short stainless steel panels. I ve got one at the back of my cooker and no tiles but just painted walls but that looks cool what you did there. I don't like tiles cos of the grout.

Hi Sarah! I do this same dish in the air fryer. I love it. So crispy and no oil taste. But ... I never triangled them. So neato! Looks pretty. Happy Cooking! PS: I also do coconut with my panko for a change up. Yum!

I've been vegan for a while, but for some reason I can never bring myself to try to make anything with tofu... I may just try this recipe. It looks yummy and super easy. I really enjoy your step by step instructional videos! They help so much. Although, I would really like if you would say the exact amount of spices, flour, or other ingredients in the actual video. That way when I'm making the recipe and I can watch you and easily follow your instructions... Ya, I guess I'm picky lol. Don't judge. Haha 😉 LOVE your channel!! You rock girl!💙❤💚💛💜🖤

Excellent! I needed a few more tofu recipes in my life, as I just made a massive batch of sort-of-failure homemade tofu. I thought I'd try cooking the soya beans first, before grinding them down, and let me tell you, that this did not work nearly as well as cooking the raw soya milk! Any good suggestions for homemade g.f. panko recipes that could work with this breading process?

Hmmm I'm not sure, but I have used rice panko! I get it at my normal grocery store and it has the same taste/texture as the real thing!

great recipe:) black sesame seeds are filled with protein, more than the white ones...:) we use it in many Indian dishes:) roasted and not roasted versions based on the dish, tastes awesome:)

I never thought about using an air fryer for tofu! I will definitely try this out instead of the pan frying I generally do and micromanage to get a better texture haha
