i have to say, the ducati v2 sound and this crossplane turbine/thunder sound combined with the beastly look of the headlights and the R1 in general are the most sexiest things you can get out there!

The sound of those cross-plane engines are growing on me! I like the "muscle" sound of the ducati V-twin, but also like the high RPM scream of the traditional Japanese flat-plane engines. This cross-plane design seems to have both characteristics. She still screams when she gets up there.

Some of those cross plane R1s look very planted and stable mid turn. Judging by the sound of the non cross plane bikes, the new R1's engine helps compliment a calm chasis as opposed to the conventional inline fours. Sorry, I'm rambling on my observations. Great video!!!

@Thomazz46 I just bought a Crossplane R1, actually in part because of Adey's videos. I also got the Graves low-mount full exhaust for 2 main reasons: 1) the stainless steel version drops 15 pounds of weight, centralizes the mass and moves the center of gravity lower for better handling (see any Buell or the Ducati 1199) and 2) It is one of the BEST sounding internal combustion motors I have ever heard with this exhaust. I've never heard any undertail exhaust sound like this.

Those black R1's sound crazy! I've never heard a bike that sounded like a muscle car! Nuts. Great stuff! The HD GoPro on that heli would look good.

@Wopadas The 2009-CURRENT R1 is the first production motorcycle to have a Cross-Plane crankshaft. Crossplane technology, first pioneered in MotoGP racing with the M1, puts each piston 90° from the next, with an uneven firing interval of 270°- 180°- 90°- 180°. The result is like having two engines in one: the low-rpm torquey feel of a twin with the raw, high-rpm power of an inline four. Previous model R1's were inline fours.

@The848evo The suits with the logo on the hump are older Laguna Seca models that are not sold in stores anymore. The red suit like mine in the video is the current Laguna Seca model.

they all sound nice. i actually kinda like that throaty tone the r1's have. kinda reminds me a Duc in a way. has a lot to do with the exhaust too. r1+ akrapovic = pure awesome

@roossi the one you hear is a ZX10 in the vid. if you mean newer vs old, it's because of the "big bang" motor or crossplane motor they came out with in 09 i believe. not to mention the firing order and timing.

@viasevenvai Chill, the crankshaft IS in fact out of balance ON PORPOUSE. This is something that´s been done in some bikes since years. In the 90´s Doohan´s nsr500 had the four combustions of the cilinders grouped in a few degrees, so the engine wasn´t so violent cause there was a bigger gap of time where the engine didn´t send power to the backwheel, making it similar to a V2 or a big single. It´s necessary to compensate the effects of this on the crankshaf with couterweights and balance axis.

My previous suit was Astars MX-1 which is direct competitor to my Dainese Laguna Seca suit. The Dainese suit is lighter and the leather has a more supple feel to it. I felt like there was no break-in period with my Dainese suit. Besides, Dainese has a more subtle cleaner look to it. Astars is kinda cartoony with all the plastic armor every where. My .02

@junior12343 For the 09-10 R1's they are using Graves, and Akrapovic. The Kawi ZX10 had the yoshimuras. I'm not sure about the Rossi replica and the moto bike

So do you really gain such a big benefit out of slicks on the road? I run Michelin Pilot Power for example. And the great thing about this tire is that it also has a very high grip level, even when its still cold. And as far as I know, slick tires have pretty pour grip levels in cold conditions..? I hope you get my question Adey :D, my english is a bit rusty, im grom Germany.. Ah, by the way, your a star!! ;)

@MrPhipper We were experimenting with a birds-eye view. Didn't work out...wasn't high enough.

@derberlinersmurf and @ExtremeDeathman I know the crossplane tech is old, it's been used by many in MotoGP. That is why Rossi suggested Yamaha to use it when he crossed over. Because of it's success for others like Honda. But it's Yamaha's claim not mine that the R1 is the first production inline 4 to have this tech. I'm sure they didn't forget about their TRX850 which is a twin.

I am not too big into bikes so forgive my ignorance, I see the name of the video has cross plane in it..... I assume you are referring to the crank? Do normal R1's have flat plane cranks? The black bike sounds amazing.

Ive learned alot just from reading the comments, i am a motorcycle fanatic but have not had the sufficient funds to get myself a nice bike yet, but a quick question, you guys were speaking about these R1's sacrificing top end power for mid range power? so in essence more of a track back then a drag bike? and i also read that its got less torque then the 1198 due to it being a 1000cc but does it have more torque then the average 1000??? Thanks, Original/Dark

Ok, i get the point, thanks :) One last question to annoy you with ;) ::: What kind of tire would you recommend on canyon riding with aggressive riding style? I ride Pilot Powers atm, as mentioned above. However, when these are used up, im thinking to try something different. i cant decide between the conti Sport Attack2 (which i heard only great stuff of) and the Metzeler K3..Have you got any experience with the K3? My worry is that it might even be a bit to "extreme" and slick-similar. Thanks!
