Why do you need a crossover for custom car audio, what does a crossover do? What does it do to the frequencies and output when it is a high pass, a low pass, or a bandpass. It's one thing to tell you, but I want to show you! Let's visualize a crossover!

Good explanation. Same concept applies when building stereo speakers or monitors for a band. I've built a couple of each of those, though the band monitors at last usage were powered, so the crossover was internal. Thumbs up in any event, and I love both these "tech" videos and the ones that are focused on building a cabinet to fit a space. Thumbs up!

Crossovers? Modern vehicles have crossovers built into the amps/head unit especially for factor "premium" systems. They just aren't adjustable.

Some aftermarket head units do have what's called a 3 way mode which dose allow you to implement low pass.... band and high pass across 3 different speaker pairs... Alpine and in believe some of the Android head units do have this... unfortunately I have never used this and cant a test to them working well...

When it comes to using active crossovers, how will you know when you have to much or to little filtering? What would be a good rule of thumb to fallow when setting crossovers? How can you optimally set the crossovers using the info provided with the speakers? I have never really tried using active crossovers I mostly use passive crossovers for the systems i have installed over the last 4 years.

Hi so I have a 2004 chevy blazer with a jvc kd-r790bt with rockford fosgate 3 way speakers and since installing the speakers and dual ten inch mtx subs. Anyways my problem is in short that ever since I put the new speakers in that I crank them up too loud and it over heats my head unit and they start to sound like shit. My solution is to wire up a second amp one for the actual car speakers. But my problem to this solution is that I only have one set of RCAS on my head unit so I was wondering if there is any amp that allows me to run the wires from the head unit for the speakers to the amp and then run wires from the amp to the speakers? Amy advice would be much appreciated as the new speakers sound really good until the head unit over heats.

What is your rms ratings on each speaker then rms ratings on each speaker output on headunit. Most say 50x4 but that's your peak wattage not your rms ratings. But yes it sounds like your not getting full potential outta your speakers and should go with a amplifier to correctly power them and fine tune them to your liking.

Hey. I have a question. I've ordered some Skar Audio VXI 6.5 component speakers unfortunately i'm running into an issue with them... The issue that I'm having is with connecting the crossovers to my alpine mrx-f30. When I have the crossovers connected to my amp I'm limited on how loud I can turn up my radio. The amp stops playing any sounds when I turn up the radio to about 25-30. This issue only happens when I turn up the radio with the crossovers connected. Now I've tried inputting the crossover signal directly to my factory radio(by the way, I have a 2016 Tacoma non-JBL) and I can turn it up without having any issues but once I connect it to the amp. I get to about 25-30 on the volume and the amp shuts down. I've also tried removing the speakers from the crossover and turn up the radio with the crossover only connected to the amp, and still.. It shuts down even though the speakers aren't even connected to the crossovers. Any thoughts on this issue?

@CarAudioFabrication
@CarAudioFabrication 5 жыл бұрын
You can use both eq and crossovers together. Crossovers are kind of "set it and forget it" where as eq is a major part of tuning and adjusting. "Loud" setting is usually just an eq boost on a certain range of frequencies. I avoid using it.

@fronx7975 5 жыл бұрын
@@PANTYEATR1 Okay I understand what your saying, the settings are at the right levels now but you want to add that "loud". Only problem you may experience clipping and distortion because you created your own EQ when tuning the amp. "loud" feature on head units is a preset with only is a small preamp with 15 watts per channel. Now that you have a 4 channel and a mono amp I assume, they are going to give you that power you need. see how it sounds with the extra head unit tune, remember it's all preferences of how you like it to sound.

Do components crossovers are bandpass? I have a set of JBL's p660c components and I'm wondering if I need to set the amplifier crossover to high pass or full range.
@Rolling_Thunder_Bass
@Rolling_Thunder_Bass 5 жыл бұрын
Typically component crossovers that are included in speaker sets are "tuned" to the speakers that they are included with. Thus it is most likely unneeded to set crossovers on the radio or amplifier in addition to the passive crossovers, as that can cause some unwanted reactions to the sound. So typically you would set the amplifier to full range. Additionally, most of the time the passive crossover boxes only act as frequency filters, but on many higher end systems they have zobel networks built in to make the different sized speakers sound like they are playing at the same volume.
@JacobFrey
@JacobFrey 5 жыл бұрын
@@Rolling_Thunder_Bass Wouldn't you at least apply the amplifier's high pass crossover to the components, assuming there is a subwoofer in the system? If you make a high pass using either an amplifier dial or a DSP, I wouldn't think there would be undesired effects. Honest questions here, thanks. A lot of basic upgraded systems do this. Example - I used to set an electronic high pass coming out of my aftermarket head unit going to a coax speaker (that had a built in crossover). My home theater receiver filters frequencies before sending signal to my 2-way "component" speakers. Would you say this is a good practice if done in the digital domain, but not on an amplifier's built-in dial crossover?
@Rolling_Thunder_Bass
@Rolling_Thunder_Bass 5 жыл бұрын
@@JacobFrey Most passive crossover boxes consist of a high pass filter on the tweeter channel, a band pass filter on the mid, and if present separate band pass filters on the mid bass channels. From my own personal experience, most of the passive crossover boxes are designed to work on a full range channel. The crossover circuits for mids and highs have high pass filters built in them already, so by enabling the high pass filters on the amplifier, you are applying two different exponential roll off functions to the audio signal which can combine and potentially reduce frequencies at a higher point than what was intended. Thus you might cancel or reduce some of the sounds that you actually wanted and potentially create a hole in your music. With regard to coaxial speakers, in my experience it is very common that coaxial speakers do not apply any filter to the mid-range cone. Many coaxial speakers only apply a high pass filter to their tweeter in the form of a capacitor which is soldered on to the back of the connection points on the mid-range, or the tweeter itself. These speakers typically do benefit from the assistance of an additional high pass filter to block out the bass that should really only be played on a subwoofer. There are always exceptions to rule though, I have seen component sets that can be mounted as coaxials but they still had separate crossover boxes.
@JacobFrey
@JacobFrey 5 жыл бұрын
@@Rolling_Thunder_Bass Excellent. I appreciate your response and agree that having any redundancy in your crossover or crossovers wouldn't be a good idea. I beg to disagree though about component crossover boxes having a bandpass filter on whatever is the "woofiest" woofer". In my experience, those drivers are on low pass filter from the manufacturer - Unless you are talking about an ultra high-end speaker system. (I agree with your assessment of coaxial speakers, likely not filtering the woofer at all). The speaker manufacturer can't assume a subwoofer will be present and shut out low bass content from reaching the components. You have to limit the low bass input to your woofer by using either a DSP crossover, a head unit's crossover setting, an external amplifier's high pass filter, or an inline bass blocker. For the question regarding the JBL p660c, in my opinion, Carlos definitely should configure the high pass crossover on his amplifier going to the components, because the bass drivers are otherwise only a low pass filter.

I don't think he builds boxes for clients but he does design custom box layouts that you can purchase on his website. With the drafted layout design, you can take the PDF print-out into a local car shop (one that does box builds) for them to do the labor. It may be a solution worth looking into.
