Got a bad nose-wheel wobble during gusty crosswind landings in the Cirrus SR22. See the shimmy, hear ATC calls and watch multiple camera angles as I try to improve my landings. My last landing was a bit long, a bit of a float, and my speeds weren't quite right so I'm practising touch and go's today in the SR22 to improve my airplane landings.

Huh. Stefan says "Too noisy" about the helicopter. I watched a Cirrus start-up at an airport just north of Barrie, Ontario, Canada in September. Boy was that loud. Love your videos, Stefan. And your sense of humour. Keep 'em coming.

When the weather starts to get nice in the spring my first "tune up" flight is usually circuits. Followed by a flight to the practice area for upper air work and emergency procedures, then a short cross-country flight.

Be very careful when the nose-wheel shimmy’s like that. Make sure to actively try to stop it, ie slight back pressure on the stick to take the weight off of the wheel. In my Sr-22 years (2000hrs of it) I’ve seen that shimmy break the wheel fairing in half or luckily only crack it. Not by me of course but by clients, lol. Sometimes it can really shake. Be safe, great channel.!

I think it is recommended. Not sure I’ve ever done it at least in the G3 and newer. Can’t recall the G2. Also make sure the recirculation is off in the environmental too.

I love doing "the works" when practicing circuits. If it's not busy, do touch and go's on all available runways. If safe, it's a good way to experience and practice tailwind landings, etc.. With a 4 runway airport, it's fun. As you're climbing out on takeoff, you're already on your base leg for the next runway!

Circuits - I know your pain. We have just gone into another national lockdown here in England, and my biennial renewal was due mid lockdown. No way I could get enough hours, but the U.K. CAA are allowing slightly less hours with more landings, so on Tuesday this week I was pounding the circuit at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. 9 T&G’s plus one full stop to go and pay (£30 for an hour) in a Robin DR400. Circuits can be a pain, but when the parallel grass runway has Spitfires and other “war birds” to keep you company (thankfully no helicopters) it’s not all bad - and my circuit management and landings seem to be less “rusty” too now. Thanks for keeping us entertained until we can hopefully get back to flying here in early December.

It’s an “under speed”’warning. When I retract my flaps on the ground the Avidyne warning system thinks I’m going too slow to be reducing flaps to 50%. It doesn’t know I’m rolling for another takeoff. That’s why I call out my speeds so I can verbally confirm I know my speeds are good and can ignore the warning.

I agree. Great Video and great advice, I would even suggest a CFI to accompany pilots trying to get current again or improve. All your landings seem to suffer from "low nose wheel"itis. I would get my hand slapped or even "helped" with the nose wheel less than a beer bottle high when the main gear touches down. And it must only touch the ground once the speed is bled of to the point you can't hold it up. Not sailing too far is then a matter of approach speed. Vr should be 75kt, stall speed full flaps 56kt for your aircraft, right? Starting a flare with >75kt might make sense in strong, gusty headwind. I would use 50% flaps an 85kt in that case only. But in little wind like this my (still learning to fly fixed wing in an SR20) recipe for a good landing is flare at 75kt, nose wheel up on main gear touch down and nose wheel control until the authority of the rudder can't keep it up, that bleeds speed of quickly. Just a suggestion mate; slow down on the BUMFISH and actually check each item. This includes "Under-carriage down and fixed [visual confirm]". You'll get in a retract one day and be glad for that item. Good onya!

Thank you. That's the Avidyne callout which I believe I get when I retract flaps on the rollout. So it's warning me I've retracted flaps to 50% and as I'm rolling on the ground it thinks I'm too slow (it doesn't know I'm not in the air still).

I was trained to do a BUMPFISH pre landing check, so I’ve always done it that way since my initial training. Brakes, Undercarriage, Mixture, Pump (fuel), Instrument check, Switches check, Harnesses (seat belts and security).

I would have thought that trying to slow down with a front wheel shimmy might actually exacerbate the problem. My instinct would be to add power and unload the front. Good vid. I personally love the circuit as that’s where you get to fly the plane! I can spend hours there and my pet hate is also those pilots doing a short navex. Fortunately I fly at Mangalore which is uncontrolled and you can often negotiate an inside circuit with a proceeding aircraft on a wide pattern, or just do what Stef did and do a go around to get in front.

Thanks Draavo, flight sims are good to go through procedural stuff like checklists, speeds, approaches, etc. Watching KZfaq is good but use it for entertainment and motivation only. If you want educational content though check out what Jason Miller (The Finer Points) is doing, he has some online courses and reading, and if you have any theory exams in your future now is the time to get that study done so you can focus on flying when you’re back. Is that much nose gear movement normal? I get that the shimmy is bad but there isn't any mechanical issues going on. It's designed to flex that much on a normal landing?

In Aus, when they clear you for touch and go, can you also do a full-stop landing? Can you request the option? Here they usually clear you for the option when you're flying circuits, which gives instructors some flexibility as well.

“The option” isn’t really a thing in Aus, at least not from my experience, and if you’re at a towered aerodrome if they clear you for a touch and go then you gotta do a touch and go, except in an emergency, this is for traffic avoidance and spacing as a full stop may need more time before the next plane can land. There’s also plenty of uncontrolled aerodromes where you can change your mind, but it’s still common practise to declare what you’re doing for everyone else’s situational awareness

Yeah that's the Avidyne aural warning as I've retracted flaps at low speed. It doesn't know I'm going round for a touch and go. Sorry to hear about the UK Sean, I have friends and family over there so I've been keeping abreast of the situation. I really hope those numbers come down for you.

Hey stef we have been looking at getting a sr20. Have a few questions. There is five of us in the family and found that there is a option to get 3 seats in the back. Since you have a cirrus do you think it would be possible if we put a adult and two kids in the back? I know it would be a bit tight but do you think it would work. I feel for the pilots here in the U.K. with a month long lockdown starting. I am am hopeful next year I can do what I planned for this year and spend 20 hrs flying with Cirrus Maui. Hello, it’s a custom mount into the overhead light using an NFlightCam ball joint. The engineering team attached it and we got an Engineering Order approved for its use. Talk to your engineering team, hopefully they can help you with how to mount something similar.

Love the videos, they're a nice escape from lockdown. I had a question from your last video that popped up again, 4:26 - what causes the TCAS warning on landing? Visually I can't see anything "same altitude - 1 mile" Is it picking up something on the apron, or the tower itself? Or is this just the equivalent of my cars blind spot warning alerting me to a dividing shrubbery? Thanks!

Yea it can trigger from aircraft on the ground. I do have a setting so the aural warning doesn’t sound below a certain airspeed but if an aircraft taxies across your path on short final (we have a few taxiways that do that) then it will go off. Also I think the helicopter (not picked up on the cameras) also triggered it once. Suffice to say on a busy day you get a LOT of alerts coming into Moorabbin.

You steer using differential braking on the main gear. So apply a bit of left brake with the toe brakes on the rudder pedals to turn left, and vice versa.

Why do you guys never mention runway number? Here in Europe a landing clearance always includes runway number, and as far as I understand also in the US

That's a bit of a generalisation HySeb. We do mention runway number in a clearance, but as this was circuit practise the runway number is dropped for brevity. But in a standard clearance the RWY number is mentioned and read back.

Nice videos you’re producing and uploading on KZfaq. I really enjoy every one of them. Got a question for you from, soon to be, freezing Norway. Did you ever have to use the TKS on EYZ, and I really mean in actual conditions down low? Not counting enroute at 8,10-12 thousand.

Thanks for watching. I haven’t used the TKS down low much at all. Generally it’s anywhere from say 7K up, especially when clipping the cloud tops on a cold day. It’s a basic ice protection on my aircraft though, not FIKI certified. So the TKS is just a helpful tool whilst I’m getting out of icing. It’s the one thing that concerns me the most with instrument flying to be honest. Icing is not something to mess around with.
