Hi Spenser, Excellent videos! What is the method for installing crown on sagging ceiling? Do you have a video for this? My ceiling has different sags on each wall… not sure how to approach this.

A trick I learned instead of smearing the backside of the corner with PL300 to help prevent it from opening up, is cut a rectangle piece of cloth and soak it with wood glue. Lay it on the back side like a patch or bandaid, when the glue dries it will never move and holds like steel. Great for hiding inside of outside crown corners too. They will never open up.

What kind of cloth do you use? Do you 'batch soak' them? Asking for a friend.

So here is a good example of you can measure everything and do everything right but still have an issue. Using those shims is a great way to keep having to recut pieces that may be just 1/16 short. This is one of the most legitimate carpenters on KZfaq in my opinion...

Another great job Spenc. I do the butt joints exactly the same way. Finally someone who butts these with biscuits. I do base the same way. This saves alot of time as I have a terrible time lining them up and most of what I do is already varnished, so I cannot touch any bad fits. Working by yourself as I have done all my life, allows you to pick these techniques up. Others may not agree, but it does not matter. It works for you and I do agree. I also like your outside corners. Your cutting accuracy is very accurate and not everyone can measure/cut like that. But it clearly works for you and batch cutting like you do, and the fits I see, are excellent. Close to varnish grade excellent. I cannot batch cut like that and be that accurate. So you are doing a great job. Keep it up. I would have never thought that those inside mitered cuts would have come out so nice, but they did. Your techniques save alot of time, and time is money when you are by yourself.

I have to use the ol shim trick in tray ceilings a lot, because they're always jacked up with drywall mud. I've been using the Titebond Speed Set a lot here lately. Sets up extremely fast and it's thin like regular Titebond 2. I've had CA glue fail in the past, so I'm still leary of it. I still use it, but only in certain applications. It does great with MDF, but fortunately I don't have to deal with it much.

Always good stuff Spencer. I can't recall ever using that double bead profile before but I can see why you join the long runs like you do. One thing that the indirect lighting crown reminded me of is when I install crown on kitchen cabinets where they intend to lay rope lights on top is to either install 1/4" plywood on top of the cabinets or at least over the top of where cabinets are joined together to keep light from shinning down through. I also caulk behind the crown where it is attached to the cabinets for the same reason. It seems like no matter how tight you get all of your attachments that some light can get through.

Great work Spencer! One tip I use to aid in aligning preassembled outside corners is to clamp a framing square to the bench. When gluing, you push the bottom of the crown into the square which aligns it and presses it tight while you tilt the top into place and press it. This makes it perfectly square while at the same time gives pressure to the entire length of the joint. I like your dowel reinforcement trick. I wish there was a thicker instant glue for this though.

great video brother! i've been using that exact same technique forever, feels great to know im doing it the same way as you. ive been using 2p10RT or the extra thick for YEARS with great success. the drawbacks of working with it dont out-weight the speed benefit. another tip id share is to use pencil marks (light of course) to align pieces during dry fitting casing and baseboards so when you go to fit it together you can line it up quickly without goofing it. the other drawback i havent figured out how to mitigate is squeeze out, that can be difficult to get rid of and a pain in the ass if you get way too much, plus it gets on your fingers lol. its great against expansion and contraction but its weak, like you said.... ive been using PL on the back of my joints around windows and doors in combination with 2p10 with biscuits and have had ZERO joints open up during winter/summer or slamming doors. i quite often work for clients over and over doing projects and get to see the trim ive installed years later. im headed to my local woodworking store today to get that bosch angle tool you have. that sucker looks exactly like what i need to improve my baseboards and crown. i look forward to your next video!

I learned quite a bit watching your video and learned about a few techniques that I had never thought about. I'm DIY'er and though not a pro, I can honestly say that I do good work though I'm slow and would be broke if I were getting paid. Years ago I put up a crown molding in my dining room. I had to make a scarf joint on one of the walls using a 16' and 2' piece of dental crown. Not knowing any better I did a 45 degree scarf on both pieces and joined them on the wall. The joint was pretty much perfect when I put the two pieces together. I didn't use glue (didn't think about it or think it would need it) and damn if that joint doesn't open and close depending on the season. I filled it using spackling but that got squeezed out the first time it was humid. I then tried a little caulk and while that's stayed in place it looks like crap when it gets squeezed. I'm thinking about making filler with sawdust and wood glue but I don't know if that'll do any better. Most people don't notice the seam but I sure do and it drives me crazy. If I had seen this video prior to doing my crown this would never had been an issue.

Thanks for the tutorials.. I am going to start the crown install on my home. The spring angle you described made a lot of sense when referring to ceiling height and crown molding width. My question is: The ceiling height on my home are all 8', except for the entryway which is 18'. There is a set of stairs which transitions to an upstairs hallway which transitions back to a 8' ceiling. Is it best to keep the spring angle the same throughout the whole house? I purchased the crown molding already and it is 3 5/8" width with a 38/52 spring angle. Your thoughts, thanks

As usual, nice work. You were saying that if you’re CA-Gluing a butt joint and you’d be screwed if it doesn’t fit right the first time. You could always cut that section out, and add a piece, and end up with two butt joints, but it doesn’t have to ruin the whole run on crown. How long are those staples up stitch the back of the crown you showed towards the end? I’ll keep watching, and learning.

That Bosch angle finder has been on my wish list for years. I've had the same thought, the mud throws off your angle over a long distance. Have you done trim work on Rehabs? I would want to know how you would go about it. I'm in buildings that were built anywhere from 1800's - 1960's Floors all wavy and buckling, walls out of square and not plumb. Like how would you establish your baseboard height? Use a laser level? I ask because I've had to scribe out 2.5 inches!!! Can't push down fingerjoint because it cracks. Learned that the hard way. Or should I try to scribe a piece in?

Microsoft Excel used to be a PC only software and you purchased the software outright with a $400ish price tag. Now you rent the software monthly ($7) and you can install it on your PC or smartphone. It's really nice for anything that requires calculations that can be crunched by a formula or some other kind of mathematical pattern and has much more options than a specialized calculator (like a roofing calculator) because you can calculate a list of numbers instead of 1 at a time. I built a spreadsheet for running baseboard/quarter round molding that I keep on my phone that allows you to enter a list of lengths and the type of ends of each piece (long point, short point, square cut, door cut, etc.). If one or both of the pieces ends in an outside/inside corner that is not 90 degrees, you can input what the corner angle is (i use a husky digital angle finder to find what the actual angle is of a corner) and the Excel spreadsheet will auto calculate what you need to set your miter saw at to get the miter right for the custom angle you entered. If you enter nothing it assumes it's a 90-degree corner. If I have 50 strips to run, the spreadsheet not only reduces my time by probably 40-50% it also increases my quality of work b/c i don't have to spend the time crunching non 90 angles anymore / miter saw settings. I have never worked with crown molding, but I know a little bit about it and spring angle etc. I'm def going to build another spreadsheet for that when I do. There are specialized calculators that calculate things but most do not allow you to enter lists of numbers so you're having to do it one at a time but with Excel you don't. If you took Trigonometry (sine, cosine, tangent, arcsine, etc) then you'll be able to build your custom formulas for what you're doing no problem.
