I really liked this Dom, we used mostly wood for heat and cooking year round on the farm here in west central Alberta, from 1952 to 1963 when I joined the army, so it does my heart good to see you, and others going back to it. It probably isn't feasible for all cruisers, but is something all should check out. Looking forward to your year long challenge, and won't be disappointed for sporadic uploads. That will probably be a greater challenge, finding wifi. Take care, be safe and sail on.

Hi there. I have the same stove as you installed with a textbook straight vertical chimney and with the same Dickenson deck flange. I also am super happy with the stove. I did have one major problem. After I installed it and had used it in the autumn here on the west coast of Scotland, we started to get our usual winter storms, with weekly times where it was gusting 60 knots. The stove became unusable in these super windy conditions. Serious blow back on smoke filling the saloon on my 1986 Moody 47. The problem was completely solved by adding another 2 foot long section of chimney on the deck between the top of the deck flange and the underside of the chimney cowl, which is the same one as you have. So if you experience severe smoke blow back, add an extension to the above deck chimney as I have and problem solved. All the best!
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures Жыл бұрын
We too had a huge storm and experienced one of those blow backs, and we were thinking of changing the cowling to a split flue? But some additional height probably wouldn’t be a terrible idea.
@boatsandbits7091
@boatsandbits7091 Жыл бұрын
@@CadohaAdventures I went through all the different types of flue possibilities and researched it all thoroughly. My conclusion was to lengthen the above deck chimney before doing anything else. In a former life I was a physicist and lengthening the chimney made sense from a physics perspective. My stove was unusable with winds over 30 knots. Since the addition I have had zero problems. I am a full time liveaboard sailor. Right now it is gusting 60 knots. The stove works great. I share the same goals of being off grid and as self sufficient as possible regarding everything so enjoy and relate to your perspective and goals. Cheers!

Excellent information and that wood stove looks great. Thanks for putting the video together and I look forward to your 365 challenge.. you are probably aware that Calor have decided to stop filling the 4.5 kg butane, and 3.9 kg Propane cylinders at the end of this month. I did hear about the gas bottle nightmare which is unfolding, it’s been affecting some of the guys in the marina we’re currently in. To be fair we do much of our cooking electrically, but for at least 3-4 months of the year it will have to be simple food we cook on the stove. I’m actually looking forward the most to catching fish in the winter and figuring out how to make great meals with such limited cooking space.

I had a Squirrel wood burner on my Narrowboat for 15 years and never had to buy any fuel for it. Dead wood gleaned from canal side copses, woods and pollarded willows did a great job of keeping the boat warm while cruising the canals through all our seasons. Cooked on top, baked potatoes on the two fire bricks inside. Pine logs spat resin on the glass door which could be a problem keeping clean. Thoroughly recommend a wood stove. Stay warm.

Shame you missed the Charlton and Jenrick Adventurer- it burns a lot cleaner ( 2022 compliant and 5 star clear sky rated) than your stove appears to be burning looking at the state of the flue and comes with hot plate, oven full heat shield and marine hearth options! I think it just won an award as best in class in the observer newspaper. On the flue, it frightens me as an industry insider to see single skin pipe used so much. The problem isn't so much normal use but if ever you have a soot fire in the flue then you may well be in trouble, so really keep on top of that flue

Looks great. I noticed last weekend my father had a Rutland burn indicator that sets directly on his wood stove. It had three zones, creosote, burn zone, and overfire. I thought it was interesting that it showed when the stove was burning at too low of a temp creating hazardous creosote build up and the other side of the spectrum when the stove is dangerously hot. Anyway, they are cheap and it may give you piece of mind knowing that the stove is operating efficiently.

Will it burn coal? Is that a viable option? Ebeneezer Scrooge heated his entire office with just one lump of coal and Bob Crachet never complained! 😉 If you can build it, an outside air source directed into the combustion chamber that disperses up the inside of the door glass, will keep that much cleaner, and not use air for combustion that has already been heated and gets taken from the cabin up the chimney. I would try at least 1½" black iron gas pipe to bring it in down the side of the chimney and maybe ¾" with ¼" holes drilled along one side to allow that incoming air to rise very near the glass. You would have to make sure the previous intakes were completely closed off to ensure a good draft occurs through the pipes to blow on the glass and provide adequate O2 for combustion. If you need more air and can't fit a larger diameter pipe up along side the chimney, then try more than one intake pipe coming down all sides of the chimney and join them together before it goes into the stove's smaller diameter ¾" pipe that blows on the glass. Since this pipe has colder air coming down it, there is no need to worry about it toching anything. It will be warmed by close proximity to the chimney but it can still be made of thinner, lighter metal, like a SS or wven copper pipe/tube. But you will need joints to fasten them together and turn corners. Copper pipe joints may fit on SS tubing which look much nicer.

Interesting video ..we thought about one of these stoves (saw it on Patrick Childress) especially with all the gizmos, for use in our house (then to fit in a boat). Great for a boat. However, if you're spending over £120 per month on fuel how does that compare with a winter marina and electric? Round here (South Wales) it would be cheaper than the south coast, so maybe migrating to save costs is an alternative? Keep up your great work and have a fantastic year...and I hope those boat jobs don't 'expand' like they normally do...
@CadohaAdventures

I think Brickhouse is where we first saw one of these stoves too. I imagine the cost in a marina is comparable but the point of adding the stove is to be able to spend the winter away from marinas and try to actually live in empty winter anchorages, or up rivers and estuarys etc for the challenge.

£120 pm in compressed logs weighing in at just over 100KG. A three month trip to the arctic or Greenland that's a lot of logs. You never did mention just how and where you stow it all ??? Did you buy that fuel barge tender I suggested? Liked the water heater thingy! Simple effective but dare I say it very unsafe! I built a heat exchanger into the flue for mine which works very well and I store the hot water in a proper hot water Sadia type tank. Thermostat controlled and gravity fed convection system no need for a pump using a mini Cat 5 fill tank to keep the hotwater tank full even when in use. It is just about enough for a shower and heats from cold to 55C in about 25 mins. I have experimented with hot water radiators for the Vee berth but that's a wip atm. As I mentioned in previous comments on your previous posts I supplement coal briquettes with my logs it gives more heat and just add two or three each time you lite and top up the stove. Finally temp control is tricky I found it's either too hot or too cold the Goldilocks outcome never happens! Great if you love Swedish saunas, just squirt some distilled water on the top and watch the pounds fall off. Oh I lied Finally final please please never put candle tea lights on top, I know they smell nice but they heat up and combust at ignition temp, how do I know my daughter tried and nearly burnt the boat down. Good luck fair winds calm seas and all, say Hi if you ever pass Port Solent!

Ha ha, no, no fuel tender, yet! We have a couple of large storage compartments forward where we can fit about 300kg of fuel and no, we haven’t used any coal yet. The water heater is a bit sharp edged but comes off easily enough and we’d only have it mounted when the fire was going, which wouldn’t be whilst we were underway. I do like the idea of building a heat exchanger in the flu though, may have to look into that a little more! 👌🏼

@@BTCxyz369 I C. Does your ins. co. care about wood stoves on boats? I used to work in the solid fuel heating industry - domestic - and all of that MUST be done to code etc. and inspected yearly for insurance to keep covering it all. Thx for your reply.

I try to be as handy as possible, but that sounds a little above my pay grade. How’s it working out for you?

How much fuel can you store onboard and where please?

We have space for about 300kg quite comfortably. If we top up with wild foraged wood then we hope to massively extend the time that initial wood lasts.

I'm sure your regulars know, but you haven't said in this video exactly where you are, and it's hard to judge what 120kg/month means, without that. Are you in the Med? In Svalbard? Makes a difference. (I'm in Minnesota, and my boat is on the hard because there's 60cm of ice in my marina, but I plan on moving south next year.)

How does your insurance company feel about wood stoves on boats? Does it up your annual cost a bit?

That’s a great question, I think we’re going to find out at renewal time 😬

I think it's a great idea to spend a full year off grid, but why stay at the same latitude? Why not spend that year sailing around the world(non-stop, maybe)? Something to think about. Fair Winds.

@@CadohaAdventures Dom I looked, but could not find the new pages on anchorages. Without wishing to impose, I would be happy to take a peak at the pages every now and then and suggest some grammatical corrections. Most of my working life has been as a journalist and editor. Obviously, no cost to Cadoha, just a small gesture of support👍🤓

@@mikewilliams4499 I imagine there’s so many grammatical errors on the site, I think I’d feel bad for you having to go through them all with your ‘red pen’ 😳😳 But, if you’re sure, then this is the anchorages page, so far www.cadoha.com/britishanchorages
