Marko Himanka Ooo, thanks Marko! That's great to hear! I agree, manuals tend to be heavy to read, and often with no connection to music at all. It's just a a list of stuff. This is partly why I want to help people get going with tutorials like this. You're very welcome to join my supporters at Patreon, if you feel like it. My biggest wish is to have many people supporting me with small amounts. I don't want it to be a burden to people to support me.

Some useful tips in there! Thanks! I found Multi Mapping very helpful for playing drums. I divided the keyboard in two rhythm sections, so i can play more complex rhythms and record them on the fly using two tracks at the same time. As I find it a little bit tedious especially for live performance to dial in every drum sound with the big knob. Cheers

@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 9 жыл бұрын
***** If you ask me - yes. The keys is more fun. But that's because I'm playing keys. A lot of people who are making electronic music, don't know how to play keys - so for them the Four is a more natural choice. Because the programming aspect is the same. But deep down, you know wich one is for you ;-)
@huhabab
@huhabab 9 жыл бұрын
Really had a hard time to decide between the two. The final push into the Analog Four direction gave me the portability and the fact that I won't play any live stuff on the go. The fact that aftertouch and the joystick-movements aren't recorded anyway and me having a midikeyboard at the place I create stuff didn't justify the keyboard and the 400€ more to pay..
@TherapyHiccup
@TherapyHiccup 9 жыл бұрын
***** yeh the portability is a factor. i have an Octatrack and the A4 would sit so nicely next to it. i do like the four individual outputs on the Keys version, as i could route that into other gear.we shall see!

Hi Cuckoo, you're one of the very few Analog Four tutorials who really start at the fundamentals, thanks for that! One question, how do I loop my sequence?
@strathamer

If it doesn't loop, maybe you're in "song" mode. Just unselect it and it will loop automatically...
@modularmountain3910
@modularmountain3910 5 жыл бұрын
I think what Arthur is trying to ask is how to do live recording looped. Press record and then play slightly after but at the same time. The record mode will start to blink. At that point it should record what you play into the loop.

Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I had firstly bought the A4 box a few years back and being keyboard player, even with an external controller, made it seem disconnected from my creative workflow that works for me. I *just* acquired an Analog Keys a month ago based upon your clear and concise and human-friendly tutorials. I still own the A4 box and it's lived in it's orig. box for a while of non-use. Now I plan to use the A4 primarily for drums alongside the AK, as to my ears and uses, the A4/AK sounds better than the newest Elektron Rtym. Thanks again and hope to see more A4/AK tutorials in future from you and Elektron should be giving you a commission. Peace, Always.

Hi Cuckoo I wonder if you could answer a question. The Keys has 4 tracks a FX track and a CV track and all can be sequenced with parameter locks. With all this power within this synth’s sequencer why didn’t Elektron add midi out for the sequencer and how do you record you sequences in you DAW? Am I missing something I should know?

This all make sense after I read the manual. The only thing i didn't quite catch while reading the manual are chains. What are they for? I understood chains as containers for patters, but what for? What's the best use for? Or chains just for experimenting purpose only?

A chain is a list of patterns playing after each other. So you can quickly make a loop that is longer than just pattern.

maybe a stupid question.. when playing a lead melody on a certain track..the sound is cut-off. You went into an expiation for the poly/rotate options for chords. But how can you play lead melody over a sequence without the pages cutting off the sound mid-way? Not sure if my question makes sense - I am new to this :x
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 9 жыл бұрын
If you plan it out a bit, the way you program the tracks, it might be a good idea to leave one track completely free. Then, when you're on that track, set it to mono, you'll know that you won't interrupt anything. Or when you play the lead melody on that track, you can mute whatever is on that track while you're playing, if it makes sense musically.

The Analog Four and Keys are more or less identical in functionality. There are more dedicated buttons on the Keys, so it's esier to do stuff without going into menus. On the Analog Four the poly settings are in the Kit menu.

Cuckoo, I know you are the one man on YT to ask. (Bought a Rytm and Keys Thanx to you). Is there a way to have keys let the note be played from Ableton and have the trigs do other stuff. Like in rytm. Let the sequencer of the keys do all the funky stuff but have note input from live? Many thanx
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 7 жыл бұрын
A note-on coming from MIDI, I think, tries to override the pattern parameters at the moment it is played, but the (trigless) trigs on the pattern will immediately take over after the initial note-on. So if it's a long note, it will still be affected by the pattern trigs.

good stuff yet again. THANKS cuckoo. my only issue with electron's OS (and there is probably a good reason why they do it) is the concept of sound pools and having to move sounds around. This is supremely annoying with the Analog Rytm as well. Why isn't the entire memory storage structure available to a project without having to take the steps of sifting thru sounds and making decisions about which ones will be used in the project? But I guess we must get used to it.
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 9 жыл бұрын
Eric Davis Yeah, I think it's to ensure speedy playback, and make advanced functions possible. Everything in the pool is probably loaded into a RAM memory, which has got much faster access than the +drive. For straight up sample playback, streaming from the +drive would probably be fast enough. But when doing crazy stuff I have a feeling the RAM memory is much more flexible.

Hi Cuckoo, thanks for another nice instructional video, I wonder if you've tried to record in a live mode over several chained patterns - that would theoretically extend a possibility for a longer then 64 step sequences... do you think it's doable?
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 7 жыл бұрын
+Vlado Mudrak yeah it's doable. The only thing is that you need to prepare the patterns before you record. A pattern with no trigs is regarded as empty and 16 trigs long. So for the first round, put a trig somewhere in each pattern, where it doesn't matter, (cv channel, or fx channel?) to let the patterns stay long.
@VDJ4500
@VDJ4500 7 жыл бұрын
+cuckoomusic thank you a lot Cuckoo! Will i need to pre-select sounds beforehand for those tracks in chained patterns? I mean - If i'd play for example with a lead sound on a specific track and the patter'd change- will that lead sound remain there?

I'm currently debating between an Analog Keys or a Novation Peak. I know each are different and you can't compare the two really, but your videos are highly informative about the Analog Keys! You may well be the deciding factor between my next synth purchase. Just out of curiosity, I've tried googling this and haven't found an answer just yet, but, how many waveforms does the Analog Keys have? Does it have any built in wavetables (like the Virus Ti or Novation Peak)? Or is it literally the "basic" waveforms (saw, sine, tri, square etc)? Any info would be appreciated :) Thanks for the great videos!
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 7 жыл бұрын
+Samuel Round thanks mate. Yeah they're two sick different instruments. The Keys does not have wave tables. Only basic waveforms that can be messed with and filtered. I will make a new video with the Peak soon'ish. The last software update enhanced the FM greatly.

@Sasq2890 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply dude! That's a great help! I look forward to your next video! Out of interest, which synth between the two do you prefer, and why? Hard question I'm sure!
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 7 жыл бұрын
+Samuel Round I prefer the Keys. I both like the sound and the flexible and deep sequencer. The Peak is growing on me though. It has its sweet spots for sure.
@Sasq2890
@Sasq2890 7 жыл бұрын
cuckoomusic yeah, that's what I'm debating between. I already have a Virus TI2 Desktop and I'm selling a Virus Ti Keyboard to raise funds for either the Peak or Keys. The Peak had hands on control with lots of knobs which appeals, much like the Virus. The Peak strikes me as a better sounding (in terms of aliasing) synthesiser, with similarities to the Virus. Obviously the Virus has no Analog parts, but does a great job at emulating classic sounds. The Keys on the other hand will offer me something different that the Virus and Peak cannot offer me, with regards to the Keys powerful sequencer. The ability to change the parameters per step of the sequencer has me convinced that this is the synth for me if I already own a hands on synth such as a Virus. I also plan to start buying eurorack modular gear in the future, the Keys extra CV control over the Peak also appeals, as does using the sequencer to control the eurorack gear. I think I'll be getting a Keys. It's sound has a more appealing nature than that of the Peak, to my ears anyway! Keep up the good videos and thanks for your help! Ps. If you're after a Virus Ti Keyboard, let me know 😋👍

hey @cuckoomusic i'm trying to deal with an issue on the Keys and wonder if you know a solution for it.... how to untie the octave shift from pattern change? When I change the octave range from the octave up/down buttons, the sequencer obviously saves it to the active pattern (and track). Now if I change to another pattern, the octave range will jump to the position I played in when the pattern was last active. If for example I have a chain of patterns playing and want to jam on one track using octave shift, the range will jump up and down once the chain loops. Do you know how to change this? cheers!

I feel you on this, mate. It's very unfortunate that it works this way. I have also been pretty upset about it. I don't think there's a setting for it, but I haven't searched for it in recent years. It's good when you want to prepare for playing a certain bass line, and then later in another pattern, prepare for playing some higher chords. Then the keyboard can be saved to always be in the right octave. But as you say, when you wanna improvise over several patterns (which is probably the majority of what many people will use the keys for anyways??) it ties the octave to the pattern, as you noticed.. Send a report to Elektron about stuff like this. They're listening to suggestions, even if they make the calls.

@@truecuckoo I see your point, the setting is convenient for planned playing. Other than that it is a bit difficult to understand contructively, feels like an exvitation to go wild :D It's good to know tho that you came to the same point, thanks for the answer. Ticket time!

Hmm... A wild and stupid idea could be to use the “midi ext” mode, and loop back the midi out into midi in. I don’t think the external midi mode saves the octave? Another even more stupid solution could be to use an external keyboard altogether and get an Analog Four...

@@truecuckoo maybe you are right and this will finally convince the ministry of finance to get me the mark 2! tho i would hesitate because a proper keyboard included in the box is a valuable thing to have... i will therefore think about the midi out and in again - thing, i like the idea! until then i will play basslines, leads or chords according to what the sequencer tells me to do :D
