In this video I show you the what/ why and how to cull your fish to obtain the best results.
In order to get the top quality shubunkin goldfish you need to spend time going through your fish. The weak, deformed and fish with unwanted traits are removed.

I'm always impressed at how you can go through and inspect this many fish so carefully. I particularly like the one that was right in front in the breeder box about 11:39 . Love the pattern. My preferred method is clove oil and I try to make it so strong that it's instant. Great video Chris, hope you have a nice weekend!

You got a good eye Tara. I'm with you on that one. I can't wait to see if those lines in the brakes between the colors hold. That'll be definitely a one that'll be watching and be going into a separate pond altogether with some of my other. Very best. We'll see how it goes if I don't get a chance beforehand. Merry Christmas! Happy New year! Big hug coming your way from Canada. Take care of my friend

I'm still finding the odd one and there'll be another call right before they go outside in the spring and then they'll be a bigger one in the fall on which ones I keep and then the rest I'll get moved on as I definitely will have to replace my brood stock. Probably this coming year or the next

This is maybe the hardest part of our hobby and a big reason why we quit guppies, with guppies you have to do so much culling, strangely with Endlers which we now stick with you barely ever have to do any culling (unless your working with Staeck Endlers because they are variable pattern wise) but I think it odd you almost never get a deformity in any endler strain! Great video Chris, very interesting and informative :)
@stubbsaquatics6080
@stubbsaquatics6080 7 ай бұрын
Thanks guys. You know you're right about the guppies. I was forever trying to call them and I had it planted with horn wart and everything else for the babies right? And you forever getting you know. Trying to make sure you got the right ones out of there and you've kept the right ones and I can't believe you don't have that issue with some of your handlers too. You know I was always finding the oddball strain that was coming out of it or a different shade or color than why I was supposed to be. I think people that raise show guppies and endlers. They have a amazing eye. Yeah this definitely needs to be done. I wish I had a pond inside that I could grow them up faster and larger but I don't left with a few aquariums and once I get rid of some more of my Odessa Barbs I might be able to free up at aquarium to give them that much more room. I've got a bunch of odesses going up tomorrow but probably not enough since I've been stacking them in every tank. I just didn't expect them to breed that well this year. Oh my! They're like your melon barbs they I'm tripping over them

Thanks Patty, it really needs to be done. It's not the most fun job in the world that's for sure, but it's necessity when it comes to trying to get breeding numbers and quality. I'm sure when you have some of your live bears that you have to go through the odd 1 now you can't stay and you've got a puffer that'll go. Oh yeah, just drop them in this tank and I'll look after the problem right now hahaha. Merry Christmas buddy! All the best

They were born late in the season this year and they generally are bigger. I usually also have them in a larger tank but I was limited on space this year because I upgraded one of my barb tanks to the 125. So all my brood stalker in 290 gallon. So unfortunately I only have three tanks to raise the these frying and they're just not growing quickly. Once I get them out to the outdoors will grow really quickly. Thanks again! Merry Christmas and a happy New year. Afford to seeing you next video

You have a lot of patience Chris, there is a lot of fish to get through, your right catching deformities early as they do become bigger problems as the fish grow. The ones in the breeder box with the large patch of black I think will be stunners.

Culling them is the worst part about breeding them, I like using clove oil for culling my fish I know I have piranha that could eat them but it's too painful for me to watch at least the clove oil is like anesthesia and slowly puts them to sleep before they pass away, Thanks for the shout out Chris! I do think some of the ones that you are holding back have some potential but so hard to tell at that age, you should try picking out a show quality boxer puppy at 8 weeks old OMG it's so hard you can only hope from what you see as compared to the other pups then hold him back and wish for the best, it really is the same when picking out the best fish, watched in full.
@stubbsaquatics6080
@stubbsaquatics6080 7 ай бұрын
Thanks Greg and you are welcome my friend. I can't imagine doing boxer puppies at 8 weeks then again I'd have a hard time giving any of them up so I probably wouldn't be doing a very good job. Yeah calling on any of the goldfish or koi has to be done. It's not like other fish where you just looking for the odd deformity. It's so much more. I don't know because of it's of the small line breeding or just the nature of the species. When they breed they put out so many eggs right? I am not really sure but it keeps me busy during the winter and I just wish I had more room so they could grow up faster and bigger. Oh well, only work with what you got. Take care buddy. Merry Christmas and Happy New year if I don't talk to you beforehand

2nd comment first one KZfaq apparently decided wasn’t happening. Very fifficult job culling so many fish, and also very hard decisions deciding who to keep and who to cull. I been lucky to keep my culling to a minimum, but deformed specimens do happen from time to time. You do an excellent job in your selection process thanks chris🙂👍🏻

Not a fun job at all. Jeff but it has to be done as you well know. It's hard to you know. Make those decisions and I just don't have the room and food is so expensive so something that's going to grow up and then be in pain trying to swim or be a target for a predator in the pond later. It's just not fair to them

Awesome video Chris 😊, very very interesting to see how you go about selecting the right fish for future stock. Unfortunately culling is one of the things i hate doing. I'm with you on that. Arnold but unfortunately with bigger fish like goldfish and koi those deformities really get exaggerated because they're a big fish when when they get older and causes them so much issues. So it's best to stop the suffering before it gets bad. I don't like doing it but it's the survival of the fittest and being there's no predator to take care of the problem. I have to take care of the problem. Thanks again my good friend. Have a great Christmas and a New year's if I don't get to speak to him before then. All the best
