From Doug Stanhope's 2016 special ''No Place Like Home''
Recorded Live at The Bisbee Royale in Bisbee..
CLIP: “The mental illness chunk” He acknowledges he’s oversimplifying by choosing to divide all of mental illness into two camps: one umbrella group for those disturbed; the other, developmentally disabled or challenged. Only the latter earns our societal sympathy, Stanhope argues. Our disturbed neighbors get kicked to the curbs, often literally left homeless and alone.''

@@huntrayisabeast16 I love George, Doug is very specifically different. So much so that he gets NO coverage ever. George was by his own defining a "social commentator". Doug is sort of like that. When Carlin died I took it hard. Doug is not Carlin and that is a credit to both of them. I understand where people draw the similarities.....but they really aren't similar at all.

@@user-ko5ul7yi1x I was listening to his podcast a lot back around the time frame of this being filmed. And I'm pretty sure it was around the same time Bingo his girlfriend was having some mental health episodes and breakdowns. I remember she was having a very hard time with a doctor or two and a facility or something. With the only place she could go that her insurance covered was horrible or she had to travel hours away to get any kind of actual care. I can understand the vitriol he has here, especially seeing it through the lens of it very much effecting the life of a person you love. The system is fucked and it is just how he says... nobody cares about the mentally ill unless they are an issue for someone at that moment or stuck with/caring for them..

The man or woman that other comedians said they were afraid of and would never follow. Profound truth, of which is conveniently overlooked and even suppressed or downplayed by the imposter syndrome ridden, remorseful buyers club of the kids with kids. These people have such weak senses of self that they generate most all there self worth praying at the alter of the status quo according to big daddy business and comparing themselves to everyone like everything is one big competition. Appealing to authority whilst impoverishing personal autonomy, patting themselves on the back for the image they uphold about themselves as they undermine and incredulate all who oppose the single minded sycophancy that is there apparent primary concern. Dishonest to the core. A very sad and unfortunately common trope. The matter of fact way in which doug brings the subject about is deeply cathartic to me, he is a hero.

I finally watched this special last night, 2 years late. This immediately became one of my favorite comedy bits. Right up there with Carlin's Pro Life rant. I was constantly jumping between wanting to laugh and wanting to cry. "The idea of comedy, really, is not everybody should be laughing. It should be about 50 people laughing, and 50 people horrified." - Patrice O'Neal

I lived with a woman-- she was eccentric. I spent about 3 weeks thinking she was going to murder me until I realized that she had no internal monologue--- she said everything she was thinking out loud, and most of what she was thinking was about past trauma. I was never in any danger whatsoever. I ended up giving her my car keys and debit card. I've never trusted anyone more than her other than my ex-wife and kids. Lived with her for months and she was a pleasure. But if you didn't know her-- she was terrifying. Constant really aggressively violent speech coming out of her. You just had to realize it wasn't aimed at you, she was just talking to herself. When someone walks behind me, I feel on guard and ready to fight if they do something weird. With her, she would be cussing and punching the air, I never ever felt the the least bit in danger or on edge. She seemed crazy, but she wasn't. There's degrees of crazy.

I tripped over my own shoe laces and ended up in hospital with multiple fractures. The cause was/were my reacent;y purchased safety boots. The boots had steel toecaps, which were a great protective feature (and my reason for buying the fucking things) , BUT they also had hooked metal lace threaders, into which the laces of one boot got caught in the other boot; bringing me down to solid concrete, breaking my knee, wrist and elbow... all within a single fraction of a second. But I still love Doug, he's never far wrong. He's the only human, that I've NEVER met, that I want to meet and get drunk with before I die. (indeed I could very well die that very night) I don't always agree with him but he always makes me laugh out loud, even when I don't. GOD bless you Doug. You're the best... ever. And don't become a theist, for that was not your blessed path and vision. Someone, once asked Thelonious Monk what made someone a genius. His cool reply was "Who ever is most himself" Doug is a genius on that definition alone.

@19:16 - That mocking laugh at the out-of-touch and uselessness of the nurse's advice is so fitting bahahahaha

It took getting to the end of the bit to really grasp the layers of his monologue. It’s worth it though, this bit is food for thought.

The great thing about this set, is how he mocks the tarded while actually defending them, and rooting for them. Like a big brother mocks his younger brother but always has his back when it goes down.

I just call them by their given name. “Marines” Dad said to always look out for them before he died, because I’m bigger…and stuff. He said not to bitch about having to keep buying mire crayons after every lunch break. Said if anything ever happened to them, I’d gladly trade every last one of my crayons for just one more day with ‘em. I kinda agree. (Except for Carnation Pink. Fuck then little Jarhead Assholes…that’s MY Goddamned crayon … … even if it DOES still taste like green Tabasco sauce and dried jalapeño cheese spread)

I'd recommend his "Ugly Woman who Could Sing" monologue... Some pure, raw truth delivered in a way you can't deny.✌️ He rivals Carlin in his social wisdom.👍

As someone who's mostly camp 2 with a side of camp 1 I'd say this is one of my favorite comedy bits. :)
