Hi. John with etrailer. Today, on our 2014 Mobility Ventures MV-1, we're gonna be looking at and installing the CURT trailer wiring harness. So this harness actually connects from the inside, and it comes out from the inside when you're gonna use it to tow a trailer. When it's not in use, you can throw it in the back, and it's out of the element. (hatch slams) Then, when you're ready to use it, you can open the hatch and it simply just comes out, drapes over through this rubber seal, (hatch slams) and you're ready to hook up to your trailer.
So this is a four-way flat. This is one of the most popular connectors that they have for trailers. And it has he included dust cover, and that's nice to keep the corrosion and dirt out. This trailer wiring harness is great for if your trailer or if you have cargo racks or bicycle racks that have additional lighting on it. This mimics your car's left turn signal, right turn signal, running lights, and brake lights to keep you safe on the road.
So this is actually a powered converter harness, and what does that mean to you Behind this panel, we've mounted a power converter box. In the event that your trailer shorts out, it won't backfeed into your system and cause damage to your vehicle. So as far as installation goes on this, this is not a plug-and-play option for this vehicle. We did have to splice it, and that meant we had to pull the taillights off and get into it a little bit. Now, I can show you it wasn't too hard overall.
If you're interested in this or you think this might work for you, stick around, I'll show you how I did it. So this particular wiring kit is a splice kit, which means we have to get access to the wiring for our taillights. That means we pull the taillights out. On this particular model, I have a T15. We're gonna take these two Torx bits out, and we're gonna pull the lens out.
(tool ratcheting) After the Torx bits are out, what I like to do is I've got painter's tape around the metal edges, the painted edges on this, just to keep us from scratching anything. Now, on this side, we have two tabs that actually pop into it like this. So we're gonna have to take our tool. We have a plastic trim tool here, and we'll wedge this in here. This piece goes around the tab and pushes out. And so while I have leverage here, I'm gonna be pulling back on the taillight lens to pop it out. (tool clunking) (taillight pops) And the bottom one came out. Underneath, you have a factory wiring harness. And this tab right here, press down, (tab clicks) and it should pop out. After that, we're just gonna go ahead and repeat the exact same thing on the other side. The way that this converter is wired, it's gonna be situated closer to the driver side here. The longer wires are gonna go across to the passenger side. That's gonna be later. So the first thing we need to do is we're gonna push in on this grommet to access the inside of the vehicle. Once we push the grommet through, we need to get access behind it here. So you can use a trim tool like this if you need to, a lot of times just some pressure. You're gonna have one tab here. You're gonna have another tab up high. Once it's out like this, you can just add careful pressure and that'll open it up. We don't need much room. We just need enough to be able to get our hand in there, so I just have a tape roll to hold that back for me. And you can see we have the access that we need. So next step is gonna be running some of the wires through to tap into the outside, and we're gonna mount this box on the inside, somewhere back here. So as we run the wires through, what I did was (wires rustling) we're gonna leave the ground. The white is the ground. We leave that inside since we have to screw that through the frame, less chance of corrosion. The other wires I taped together, and I'm gonna run them through the factory grommet here. There is enough room. This rubber will stretch, and we can force this way through for a nice, clean, weatherproof install. (wires rustling) All right, so now our wires are through the grommet. We're gonna pin this out to figure out which wire has which signal. Now, your kit comes with a test light, and it's a little cheapy thing but it works great. We're gonna run the ground inside the vehicle up here. There is a screw right here that we can attach to that's grounded out great. So if you have a helper, this is a good time to go get them and get inside the vehicle. So the first thing we're gonna do is have them turn on the running lights and we're gonna find out which pin is the running l
