Most of us would love to be so self sufficient from our homesteads that we would not need to have a job! But that is not the reality for most people. How can you homestead when you have a full time job?
Sign up to our email list so you don't miss any of our videos here -
www.thisishomesteady.com/join...
In today's video we discuss 5 ways to make homesteading easier when you have a full time 9-5 job.
The first bit of advice is to try to get a job that you can work from home with, get rid of the commute, and to get paid for your knowledge, product or service, and not your time.
That is not possible for all of us, so for those of us who have a job that requires us to leave home, we can move our homes closer to our work, and thus use time we might be commuting in and out of work to instead homestead.
If you have to work a 9-5 Job, homesteading can be done in the early mornings! A hour each day, from 5:30-6:30, can be plenty for a person to raise some chickens or work in a raised bed garden.
When choosing what animals and plants we want to bring on to our homestead, a homesteader with a full time job can focus on animals that do not have time sensitive needs.
Many meat animals, egg animals, and even bees can be cared for on the weekends, and with minimal daily care. Some animals, like dairy animals for example, need more flexibility in the farmers schedule, and thus are a bad pick for a full time employee.
Finally, when homesteading with a full time job, make sure to keep your homestead manageable, not growing bigger than you can handle when things go wrong!
Don't let a full time job stop you from starting your homestead!

My Mom taught me to plant seeds like one spends their pennies at the market. She said, "A seed pkg is like a bank account. There's no reason to plant and harvest a 50 ft row all at once unless you are planning on putting the crop up for the winter. 'Consumer based' gardens need to be succession planted". She was doing 'raised bed/square foot' gardening before it was 'all the rage'. She even saved her own seeds and developed her own varieties of early and late crops. I wish I'd learned a tenth of what she took with her.

I couldn't agree more. Nothing like your neighbors refusing to answer the door for fear you'll try to give them another bucket of tomatoes .....LOL. But 'over production' happens EVERY year in SOME form or another even to the best of us. (I've been doing what you're doing for almost 40 years and I still screw up). Now, in my own defense, I produce excesses to sell at the local farmers' markets. But I'm just a single, (retired), guy. SO, if it doesn't sell, I gotta store it somehow. My 941 pressure canner can get a hell of a workout if I'm not careful. And that's just the garden. The bonehead decisions I've made in meat, (over), production is another story.

I work a full time job with folks jealous of my farm. Yeah, a lot of fun... But am packing the 401 to the max to escape someday. My farmstead and goat herd are doing great. The goats totally pay for themselves and cover some of the farm payment, but not all. I do need to sell my house in the city and move into an RV at the farm. Will save a lot of running back and forth and money! A work in progress...

Great topic. I'm a 9-to-5 worker and just diving in to self sufficiency. I'm very fortunate that I work form home, it really helps.. We're starting small and ramping up as we can afford the materials / time. Started with a garden. I'm building an orchard now. Chickens next year. For me however: My golden time is not before work - it's after. I do the majority of my outdoor work between 5 and 7PM (and on the weekends). Obviously when I get chickens, I'll feed/water/let them out in the morning - but likely won't clean the coop until after work. My morning is relaxation, coffee, warm up. Evening is a touch of manual labor to clear my head of all the busy buzzy work noise, get a nice burn in your muscles, and get you charged up for dinner and a good night's rest.

You are right, it takes money to buy ground and start a homestead plus keep the supplies coming to build everything and feed everyone. I worked as an R. N. Which allowed me to farm homestead for years. I always allowed an extra hour in the morning for problems and if no problems I just enjoyed a coffee while looking out over the farm. Down time is very very important.

Homesteading w/ a 9-5 here. Your video is SPOT ON! I thought I could do it all, at first. Fortunately, my home and my job are both in rural communities. Most of my co-workers are also farmers of some sort. I learned quickly to add on tasks slowly and only once I had everything else down pat and part of the system.

I worked full time and milked 40- 100 max goats everyday plus the pigs chickens etc. Was always tired. As we won at several National shows we became well known in goat world so the request for goats was big. We bottle fed every baby and was there for each birth. It got to be that the joy of anything was drained out. We downsized and regrouped. I retired few years ago and moved to the city. I miss the farm and would love to do it again someday but at a manageable scale. Thanks for great videos.

Would love to see more on this (maybe in the podcast....) I do most of the homesteading but my job pays too good to not work and to "keep us in the lifestyle we are accustomed to." I have found chickens are always a good one. I do small batches of meat birds and rabbits because they can be a weekend harvest. Dont know how we are going to handle the larger things but we are working our way up to them. The 60 fps really paid off. Love the water puddle!

I like your content of this video, I really enjoy your editing and production skills! I am a new subscriber coming over from a collaboration that you recently did (Lumnah Acres). I recently retired from a job of 32 yrs. my wife who is still working for maybe 2 more years and she will retire. I have wanted to Homestead for all my adult life, but never found myself in a financial or a partnership that had the same dream. My wife of 34 yrs. has been the correct partner for homesteading, we have had gardens that worked out well over the years, but couldn't keep animals for food until now. Our occupations has been working for a utility that required 7-24 & 365 days of operation. Electricity is something that 99%+ of the population cannot do without. What that accounts for is very long hours and around the clock demands, and travel, not conducive to homesteading. The reason I'm explaining this is to add one more element to your topic....patience! Raising children, working full time jobs, and trying to maintain a simple roof over your head, it's the 'rat race' we all want to be rid of.....like you said, "we all can't stop and start homesteading". We all can do some part of it at varying stages and circumstances of life, but not all at once. Patience, Planning, and in full agreement is the fundamentals to start with! One thing that is not being discussed much anymore....is the 'grubstake' finances need to be strictly adhered to, and sacrifices of vacations (get used to staycations), new auto's, farm machinery, the latest & greatest food processing equipment, elaborate housing, volume acreage, large inheritances of money & real estate, are not a reality for 99.9% of us. I don't want to be a 'downer' to the dream, but eyes wide open are a must!

@Homesteady hey, Aust! I’ve become very interested lately in finding out more about sheep on the homestead! Have you ever raised sheep or do you have any opinions on them? A really cool thing I heard is that their wool is EXCELLENT for using to line neat boxes for chickens because they don’t scratch through it as easily! Thought this was really interesting!

I got no full time job / I got no work commute / I can work from home / I got no career obligations / I never had a boss that owned me / I never rented my time except the time I spent making movies based on the production schedule / I want to plant fruit trees first / then I want to start farming with two 2 pigs just like Homesteady / I want to plant stuff in a raised beds with home made authentic munchie compost / without getting fired / so I like listening to Homesteady and I signed up for the Friday Homesteady video and podcast list. I did have a stroke seven 7 years ago so I am not able to sit up roll over stand walk skip jog run waterski snowboard do yoga sit down for dinner hold a chair for a pretty girl I am flirting with arm wrestle a pretty girl I am flirting with / so I go ALL THAT going for me. Pretty sharp beautiful nurses have been arriving at my door asking to come in and if they can do anything for me Real Quick / seven years ago when I first got here I fell in love with Cristina Hernandez from a little town near Guadalajara / she has a bunch of kids beautiful smile in every standout photo she takes anywhere - I mean every photo your eye goes right to her smile / sometimes her friends take a photo of her about to eat some Mexican food and the table top is filled with all sorts of tasty treats she is about to eat and drink / and she is smiling / she enjoys being a Zumba instructor so she is in great shape for a young hot teenage babe in her mid forties. I got nothing to offer her at all except she knows I am on her side. She went to work somewhere else one day and Facebook kicked me off forever so I don’t see any new Cristina photos. It’s fun to send her email and say hi on the telephone. Cristina can ride a horse and dance real good. Then Diana walked in last Halloween in a Wonder Woman outfit - turns out she is a well trained physical therapy person so I signed up real quick and Diana is willing to push me onto the sunshine patio where I get to pick up ping pong balls and put them into a ping pong ball box - so far Diana has won each time we arm wrestle - so pretty soon I am certain I will be real good at picking up fresh Homesteady eggs and putting the eggs in a egg carrying thingy like your kids use. I watched you guys make pastry squeezer beef jerky in one video. Keep eating beef jerky it’s tasty.

The only thing that I could disagree with is the “don’t get paid hourly”. My husband got moved to salary a few years ago. So, now instead of getting paid overtime, he works even more and gets nothing for it. I’d kill for him to have a 9-5 or 8-4 or ANY 8 hours. Lol! He works 11-12 hours a day 5 days a week and has a 45 minutes to an hour commute each way. That leaves me doing 90% of the homesteading and our weekends pretty busy with the remaining 10%. We are fortunate in that I can stay home and homeschool the kids, so at least we aren’t both away every day. There is so much we would like to do on our homestead, but I just cannot take it on by myself. Our dream is to have him work from home one day.

automation automation automation try to do everything on the farm in less then hour a day and two hours tops would be my suggestion frost free auto water are the sexiest and i mean the sexiest thing ever made for cutting down on chores. food automation is ok for some animals like pigs but not so good for other animals like chickens. a good balance in time vs money is a big deal to feed every day and save money or to not feed every day and not save money but not really be able to track your expense to ferment or not to thats a super big question and if done right can save a tone of money but it is worth the labor every day soaking feed and having to feed everyday instead of once a week would it be at half the food savings on a small scale maybe not but if you know how to do it you can up scale it. just my thoughts

The notion that one can make a living homesteading is a bit out there..I believe that's called farming..As yourself homesteading is for other things like the lifestyle, being more self sufficient and that list go's on and on. Can one make money at it,,yes, some, can one become totally self sufficient,,most likely no. Still everything adds up..after all is said and done we live lives that have many options which we pick and choose.
