The ease of installation is a no brainer! Just having the controller installed into the motor and the simplicity of the speed sensor and the throttle control and screen is brilliant! Didn't see a lot on brake disconnects? I doubt I would use that anyway. I bought a 250W mid drive ebike (proper road legal) and even that bike does not come with brake disconnects! Start rant! Imagine the Photon installed with an Alfine 11 rear hub(or a nexus)....How clean would that look! I like having my BBSHD at 3000W but that Photon is so clean and in all honestly I am not a speed junkie who is looking for a faster ride anymore. So A donor bike say $1000.00(2nd hand?) Aussie dollars, Photon $1500.00, Nexus hub $400.00 Aussie dollars and a decent 52V battery(25/30Ah)$750.00/1000.00 Aussie dollars. Allowing say $200.00? dollars to fit the nexus into the wheel rim? Go old school and just use the existing cassette to save money it could range from say $3500.00 Aussie dollars to as much as you wanna spend! My calculation allowed for a good quality battery so you could save money buying a smaller battery or a cheaper donation bike unless you already own a good bike! I paid similar for a 250W Electric Ebike so this is really something to save for. For all the people who can do it cheaper good for you! As an Australian we tend to pay a bit more for stuff down under so I have been fairly liberal with my figures! A thousand dollars for a donor bike is for a decent frame so I am being fairly aggressive price wise! To have an Ebike which you build yourself knowing what you have and understanding how it goes together plus the knowledge gained building it the price of $3500.00 Aussie dollars is not to outrageous in my opinion! Enough of my rant! 🙄🙄 Anyway that finished bike you built looks really good in it's simple design and really a clean build! I am interested in how natural the bike feels to ride as just that....A bike which you need to pedal! I am curious how the torque sensor? handles the feel for the ride! Keep up the good work!

Thanks Sparkie, makes sense with the nexus. I opted out of the brake cutouts. Seems to be ok. The harness is different if you want them so you have to say otherwise you get a two way design.

For tightening the chain ring I would stick a long screwdriver or something similar from the other side of the frame through the openings in the edge of the chain ring. Then hold that in position with it contacting the frame while you tighten the lock ring. The chain whip should work fine too, that's just what I'd do if I didn't have one.

Very good video and commentary. Thank you for that. I was getting ready to buy a BBS02 but then stumbled across the Photon. It looks really good but there isn’t alot of them out there to determine what reliability will be over the long haul. In your opinion, how does the Photon compare to the BBS02 and is the torque sensing of the Photon make the BBS02 fail by comparison in feel and quality? I want the feel of torque sensing.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits Жыл бұрын
The torque sensing is a much better feel. How long they last for though is a good question. CYC said its been developed for three years though so hopefully it was well tested.
@larrygross1248
@larrygross1248 10 ай бұрын
I just purchased a Photon, too, and I'm watching this to learn the installation routine. (I've installed BBS02's before). It's my understanding that if you run the Photon very hard, they can run too hot and eventually burn out. I never really got any good definition of what's "very hard" use. It's really difficult to get any idea on longevity when the product is so new. How can you know if it will last 3 years if it only came out as a product one year ago? There's just not enough real world experiences - both good and bad. With that said, all the early reviews are pretty strong.

Very nice install. Based on the triangle bag fittment your bike must be huge. It doesn't seem like 750 watts would be enough to just pick a middle gear & hit the throttle without using gears.Will you be pedaling and using gears (for a change)? I like to pedal so am very curious how the torque sensing works. How does the noise level compare to a Bafang? My main issue with previous CYC motors was the noise level of the 2 chain setup & was hoping this would be quieter than it seemed.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits Жыл бұрын
About to go out for a ride here so I will let you know on the noise when I get the time to process the video. From my quick test ride it is very quiet. The motors always seem louder when you spin them like that. The CYC X1 noise was always from the 219 chain and the tensioner.

Its not as smooth as a regular bicycle crank for sure. Just the nature of it. I would not go this route but use the settings to set out a low rate of power to just cancel out the weight of the battery. You can see the human power input on your phone display which is pretty neat.

@HighVoltageKits Жыл бұрын
I remember you Tom!, dang that is some bad luck. It does sounds like the display is what has the issues. A way you can check is to get hold of bafang program cable and plug it into where the NXT goes. Make sure the chain is off when you are testing or the wheel is isolated off the ground. If the throttle is good then it should run the bike or at least let you power it on. The NXT is from ERT which is no defunct I just made the graphics and case design. We are able to support ERT customers and can likely assist but you would probably need to send us the BAC855 and would need to get a new harness and display to work with the High Voltage Kit. All our customer service is via the discord so we really need to get you on there. You can likely setup a new account on your PC which is a pretty good experience. You can also send a message to greg@highvoltagekits.com He would likely need to test out the BAC855 to confirm that there are no issues with the controller. Let me know.

I would contact them directly. Might be an error. The Photon was on offer which excluded it. I was under the impression that had ended now.

The Q factor on that looks ridiculous. Is that because you have really skinny tyres/wheels? Do you know what the max cadence is? Thanks
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits Жыл бұрын
The Q factor is 200mm which I am told is a tad wide. The tires as 2" for gravel riding so not what I would call skinny like for road etc. I have been hitting a steady 90-100 cadence wise. I will try and get better data for people. I am not an expert on pedal cycling these days. I am using this as a path back to fitness essentially after all these years of going round with the BBSHD and not putting any effort in.

@@HighVoltageKits Thanks for that. I'm not interested in an electric moped either. I bought a modern boost frame, and I am have having troubles fitting the Tongsheng, as the torque arm touches the rear tyre. The CYC doesn't use one, so I am interested, but not unless I can get a decent cadence out of it, and not at over 3 times the cost (almost 4 after import vat). Thanks again for the info. PS Dump the throttle

I may well. I went for a really nice ride which I will post the footage of. Did not use the throttle once. The instant resume on the torque assist is very good!

I find my Bluetooth connection is very weak. If my sitting on my bike it disconnects. I need to hold my phone down slightly, closer to the motor.

With the Photon? I will see how it goes. It seemed to have a good connection. The module is in the speed sensor I believe.

it would look much better if you didn't use blue plastic for 3D printed parts. Black would be more stealthy.

Cheers. Yeah I could use black. That's true. I guess cause the bike has blue highlights I matched it but you have a good point.
