Still working on the main review. This video is for all the people that had questions as to how far you I can go. Hopefully it helps people figure out what size battery to get depending on how far they want to ride. Its not a perfect calculation but it should give a rough idea of range based on my setup.
There is also some news on the new motors from TOSEVEN motor as we will be receiving some samples to play with in the next little while. There is section on our discord on these motor and you can join with the link here. highvoltagekits.com/discord

This looks like a great setup for many reasons. Quiet, fast, great range and a great value compared to prebuilt. I've got a 2010 Specialized Roubaix that I absolutely love but a 20 mi ride wears me out and I need 2 days to recover. I think a CYC Photon and 52V battery would be the bees knees, and $2K is within reach.

That's such a good frame. The other day I rode out to the family cabin in 30 degree heat. A 35km trip that I could not do on a regular bike in three hours as its uphill. I did it in 55 mins. I got exercise but was fresh enough to enjoy a BBQ and head home. The torque sensor makes it feel really natural like riding a bike but if I was a real athlete. i got my Photon on January to replace a Tongshen TSDZ2, both are 52v, I wanted a little more power. The Photon torque sensor kicks in right away, where as the TSDZ2 would kick in 2 seconds later which I did not like. I had the TSDZ set up to 3 level of speed setting and the Photon was already set at 3 levels, so in comparison level 1 on the Photon is just about the same as level 2 on the TSDZ, so just that alone is a big difference between the two motors. I like the Tongshen but it just feel like it's lacking that get up and go power that the Photon has. I am using a 50t chainring on the Photon with 11-46 9 speed cassette and I can ride up hills just using level 1 with no problem, where as the Tongshen I was using a 42t chaining with the same cassette and using level 2 to ride the hills that I ride. So my feeling is this obviously, the Photon is faster and more powerful, 35mph when your going for it, the TSDZ maybe 30mph if you have a 52t chainring on it, which I did, because you can replace the chain guard and have 2 chainring on it, but you must move the chain manually to do so.

5:08 - Consumption is estimated by checking current voltage and amperage every specified period of time ( to make things easier let's say every 1s.) for example Sample 0: 0V*0A = 0W Sample 1: 48.00V * 10A = 480W Sample 2: 47.99V * 5A = 239.95W At Sample 1 you consumed 0.13 Wh ( why? Because In 1 hour you have 3600 seconds so 480W/3600 ) At Sample 2 you consumed 0.067 Wh Now you just have to constantly add those numbers to get total Wh consumption. If you have total consumption then you can easily calculate average consumption per km (Wh/km) Keep in mind that probing every 1s won't be very accurate so in practice this interval is much smaller. Probably lower than 100ms.

@@HighVoltageKits The simplest way to do this without any crazy setup is to put a cycle analyst with their plug-in kit on the bike and use it to measure the power consumption. Since it stands between the battery and controller it will tell you exactly how much power is moving to the controller at any given time and since it has its own speed sensor it will know the distance traveled and power consumed at each interval, they have a GPS kit and a SD card data recorder option that lets you map power consumption and location at the same time, very useful if you want to know the exact power usage of the system in a scientific way.

In my opinion, for someone who doesn't really want to pedal a geared or direct drive hub would be a lot cheaper and work just as well for this type of riding. Depends on the motor kit and what power and speed you want. A geared hub is great to pedal without motor power.

There are quite a few cheaper options than the CYC. I have not had the pleasure of trying a geared hub although that might change in the near future. Nothing wrong with a hub motor! I think you can also pair them with a TS as well. The CYC is a nice package but you are right it is expensive.

I’m interested in the Photon for a mini velo bike I have. I like the small size torque sensing and programmability. Question. I converted another bike to an ebike (you are SO right that conversion kits are so much more cost effective and flexible than bikes thanks the Trek Domane - hence competition) but I find it’s over powered even though it’s just 250 watts. I ride in lowest setting which gives about 50 watts power because anything higher and I’m just spinning my legs and doing no work. SO MY QUESTION: does the Photon make sense for me? Is it too much power? I would set it to give minimal power/max range as I want to actually get a workout in. I ride at about 28-29 kmph. Can you adjust the power output a lot?
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits 10 ай бұрын
You can adjust it as much as you want. So yes 50 watts. The torque sensor is very good. So in those terms it would probably be a good fit. Another thing you can do is ride further with it. That was the key thing with me. I found I can get the exercise and ride a long way in a quicker time.

I've got random questions and thoughts since I got my Photon, I'll share them here in no particular order and maybe you can address them in your video: 1) Sounds like you are planning to include this, but I'll say it again, we want to know more about serviceability. CYC has been tight lipped, and they don't have any spare parts for sale. What can/cannot be repaired without sending the unit in? 2) Will it be possible to update the display firmware? I can think of many little improvements that could be addressed in a firmware update: more assistance levels (5 would be perfect), ability to swap between race/street mode on the fly, ability to choose a dark/light theme. Also, "efficiency" is not showing up on the ds103 display, only in the app. 3) There is a large discrepancy between the voltage shown on the display and within the app (56.6v on DS103, 58.2v in the app). What's causing that? Wish there was a way to calibrate that. 4) My Photon makes a strange noise at very low throttle (see KZfaq short on my channel). What's causing that? Sounds like an electrical frequency? kzfaq.info5XRmQssH6sg?feature=share I love my photon! Just some small things that could make it really great! Hope CYC catches up with back orders and can start addressing some problems and offering some better service.

Sorry, not sure how I missed this. I just did my full review so I think that some of these questions will be in there. I also got the voltage thing which I did talk about. Its quite common and no idea of any fix. The noise seems to be on some motors and not others. At least I cannot hear it. There is lots of stuff on the servicing and no its not end user servicable... Not without considerable effort and you would still need the parts.

Can you recommend photon for 29" XL Bike with 110kg rider and big battery? I was thinking about BBSHD due to power. City I live in is like 80% hills
@lukewalker1051
@lukewalker1051 Жыл бұрын
Haven't owned a Photon and if you are a performance rider, I suggest a BBSHD with 52v 19.2 amp-hr battery. Make sure you consider 'high quality cells'....like Samsung 21700 50E....14s X 4p = 56 cells. I come from a world of bicycle racing and still own carbon road bikes. I own two BBSHD bikes...one drop bar and one 29'er. This video is worth listening to twice. John is knowledgeable. Torque sensing is nice but I also 'love' cadence sensing and could write a book on how to use one effective for performance riding and keeping your heart rate in zone 2 for maximum health....aka endurance training while you ride. I ride with elite cyclists aka national level riders all the time, me age 69 with motor and them without motor and they routinely hit 30mph without a motor. To me, the Photon is 'too expensive for what you get', lacks the beef of the BBSHD and 'durability' is a real wildcard with the smaller Photon and price to repair. BBSHD's if you limit them to 30 amp = 35 mph or so depending on the bike, they are pretty bulletproof and if they do break, cheap to fix. Hard to fault their ubiquity, reliability and cost. Reason why I build them is because even $10K ebikes at the bike shop don't have the performance I want as John stated.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits Жыл бұрын
I was going up hills in pedal assist at the same speeds as I was getting stock with the bbshd with the throttle. The issue is it builds heat on sustained hills. My setup I think is a bit lighter. What riding do you want to do? If it's long commutes at sustained uphill speeds it might struggle eventually. I have not run into issues yet and I like the torque sensor with the Photon.

I am inteested in the version they do that is EN15194 compliant - i.e. has firmware that limits the continuous power output to 250w and the speed to 15.5mph, for legal use in the UK. The main problem is that they want this ordered from them direct as it is custom firmware and the thought of support issues and having to ship the motor back to HK, as I can't service it myself, fills me with dread. Plus they don't seem that great at answering emails either.
@HighVoltageKits

So dealers only get ones that the user can change the settings on? I am pretty sure the only way to swap from road to offroad is with your phone app. At least I have not managed to switch any other way. So you should be able to lock it so that if the bike was tested it hit those limits. In reality most bikes are more than 250 watts. The police seem to care more about the speed limit as they can check that. They have no way of testing power outside of a test center. Ideally I would get from a dealer as the service will be via them.
@AndrewDCDrummond
@AndrewDCDrummond Жыл бұрын
@@HighVoltageKits They said that version was something they had been working on with their B2B partners. Interesting, I shall check the manuals to see if the phone app is the only way to switch to race mode, especially as I will be using the smaller of the controllers. That might be enough to fool any coppers, although I would prefer the 'technically correct' legal version.

You cannot calculate the energy drawn from a battery by the voltage drop, instead you need to integrate over the current (A) x time (sec) to get that. The total energy stored in a battery can be calculated from the nominal battery voltage (V) x battery capacity (Ah) but your calculation assumes the end voltage when the battery is empty would be 0V which it will not be. The (unloaded) voltage of a battery drops from fully charged to empty state in a non-linear and battery chemistry dependent way. If you want to estimate the left capacity of a battery from the voltage alone, you need to know the battery chemistry drop off curve and measure the battery voltage unloaded. I think the measurement that the drive computer/motor controller does is based on Amps x seconds calculation which is the accurate way of doing the calculation. Hope this is helpful.
@HighVoltageKits
@HighVoltageKits Жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying. I am calculating on and end of 42 volts though which is the absolute min for a 52 volt pack. So 57 volts to 42 volts for a 15 volt range. That gives roughly 86.6 watt hours for each volt. The curve on Samsung 30q is linear enough to give an approximation.

Similar to what I get (75kg, 27.5+, gravel and offroad hills) with light assist, 5Wh/km, up to around 10Wh/km if I'm being lazy. Mostly below 30kph, and speed makes a huge difference to consumption. For me, 520Wh battery does most of what I need without extra weight. I think CYC might calculate/integrate the power actually used vs the trip distance rather than rely on voltage drop (which also varies under load).

If you have a smaller battery, like 500Wh, limiting the wattage from 800W-->500W will make a huge difference due to the internal cell resistances and squadratic nature of all the losses involved (power losses come squared, wind resistance comes squared, internal cell resistance rises with power).
