This is a CYC X1 repair video to help people with the re assembly of the sprag clutch in the freewheel for the Gen 3 X1 and the Gen 1 Stealth motors. Easy to take apart but not so easy to get back together this 3D printed tool will make life a bit easier. You can download and print this tool with the link below. There are multiple versions of this particular part so it will not work for them all. I have included the original design file in fusion 360 for people to modify if they so wish. If you like the tool and it works for you consider joining the channel and showing your support that way. You can do so for about a sip of coffee a month (if you frequent Star Bucks LOL)
Note - Make sure that the sprag clutch is inserted in the same orientation as the video!

Fantastic! I went thru 3-4 of these on my x1 stealth and had to keep getting cyc to mail me replacements... Lost many many summer months of riding, it was a real pain. Thanks for the great vid, i might see if i know anyone with a 3-D printer! :)

marine grease might do well here. it doesn't flow as well as e.g. shimano's green "premium grease" but it's not unacceptable, and it's so water repellent you have a hard time washing it off your hands if you touch it. i use specifically liqui moly bootsfett in my skateboard bearings with success, but there's also a more fancy waterproof grease from phil wood

Thanks for the tips Mark. I have a pretty sticky bike assembly grease which I think will also work. Wheel bearing grease apparently might work as well.

Mobil-28 grease is a *little* runnier than regular wheel bearing grease. #1.5 vs #2. Another possibility might be “SuperLube” grease.

there are lots of nice multipurpose and bearing greases@@dennisyoung4631 and i don't doubt mobil 28 is appropriate, but marine grease is really something else. i'm not a professional, i just use it. take it with a grain of salt, but it works

You might want to tell people to put the sprag clutch the correct way around as it only works in one direction 👍

use marine grease it'll hold up better to the rain etc if for some reason you can't get marine grease use automotive wheel bearing grease....

Thanks for posting this technique for using a 3d printed 'cone' to guide the crank sleeve into the sprag clutch. Would it be possible to use your guide while twisting the sleeve in the 'free running' direction to get it to seat?

I found that once its in it does not really want to turn. It might be possible. The hammer taps was the only way I have had success but I also have only tried it five or six times.

I would like one of those tapered round block. It you could send me one that would great n I have cyc x1 gen 3. I want to be able to service all the bearings in the motor my self instead of paying a shop to do it and wait 4 to 5 weeks to get it back.

I think it might be Gen 3 X1 Gen 1 Stealth style. This is from an X1 though. They change the part alot though.

Sorry but I don't have those. CYC should be able to supply the parts numbers. They are not proprietory.

Where did you buy the ball bearing replacements?

I have not yet. McMasters would be one place. CYC likely have a part number. I can take the measurements if you want. They are just standard sealed cartridge bearings as far as I am aware.

@@HighVoltageKits Chinese counterfeits 6809, 6810 are around $10/pc with only one outer race groove for rubber seal, however branded ones will be $50 or more. These bearings have very small balls inside with lower load ratings. In fact, the old freewheel had much more robust bearings, but they were poorly sealed. Btw, you can try to put smaller bearing and sprag clutch on axle first, then it's easier to set both in freewheel housing in place by hand without any instrument. The last one goes bigger bearing.

Ok, maybe I'm a bit "retarded", but it took me 2 minutes to put it together without using additional pads or a hammer :P After inserting the first bearing as you did, I installed the rest on the small part that goes through the middle. Including Sprag Clutch. I put the whole thing on the previously inserted bearing and turned it several times in different directions so that the teeth "clicked" into place by themselves. And that's it.

Congrats man. I tried it every which way with no joy. Rotation all that stuff. Lots of others struggled as well. You sure it's the exact same part? Either way good job you got the knack!

@@HighVoltageKits Exactly the same. The trick for me was that the last bearing was already attached, which acted as a stopper and additional pressure for the Sprag Clutch. Or at least that's what I think, I tested it several times before writing a comment, and each time it took a maximum of 30 seconds to embed the whole thing. The shell lay flat on the table and I placed the other part on it and gravity did its job. However, playing with springs always makes me crazy, I have to buy better spring pliers because the ones I have don't work very well.
