Cyclekart Frame Video #7 rear axle

In this video we mock up the rear axle. We are using a Peerless Differential with a sprocket adapter made by Vintage Kart Co. The adaptor helps to center the motor in the frame by moving the sprocket 3" to the left of center.
The plate that I built to strengthen the frame is actually 1-1/2" x 1-1/2".

The cuts on the top versus the bottom? My caliper mount is below the axle. I suppose you could design it in the reverse with the cuts to drop our the bottom.

Thanks for watching. I am not 100% sure but is probably because it is very difficult to add suspension to the rear and keep it relatively light and simple. The front suspension is only marginally effective. Also, the front suspension is a large visual cue for the looks of the kart. It looks nifty.

Thanks for such informative and helpful videos! So how big of a metal brake bender do you use, it looks like your aluminum sides where you put the flange on for the floor is a long piece, I have access to a 36" brake but how do you put on those long flanges?

The break that I used is 10 feet long. If using a 36" long break, probably not a big deal. You will just have a few joints or overlaps. If you want it to be one long piece, most AC fabrication shops can probably bend it for you.

HOW WIDE IS THE IS THE FRAME IN THE REAR, AND WHAT IS THE WIDTH REAR AXLE YOU USE, AND DO YOU USE SAME IN FRONT? THANKS, I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR REPLY.

The standard size rear axle is 36", you typically want the front to of similar width. The frame tapers from the front to the back. The front is usually between 16 and 18" wide, the rear end up around 20 or 22".

How does that rear work when you give it gas say like burnout will both wheels spin??Then when your turning the one wheel unlock like so not having a like live axle ??? Thanks

Both wheels will probably not spin. The benefit is that it will transfer power to the wheel that is not slipping. On my current kart with a solid rear axle, it turns left great. But when I turn hard right, the powered wheel loses traction...only one wheel is keyed to the axle, the other is free wheeling. Thanks for watching.

Is using a single disc rotor for brakes a typical setup for a kart with a differential?

Yes it works to break both wheels. Even if you run a solid rear axle, the single brake works fine

I’m curious Steve, how do your karts ride with no suspension in the rear ? Why doesn’t anyone use a rear suspension ?

They ride fine. Some guys have used a rear suspension, it adds time, money and effort. It can be done. Is it worth it? Only if you think it is. If you are mostly on pavement, it wont matter, if you are mostly on rough roads....suspension can help. Remember, this is cool looking gokart. Not a real car.

@@stevevinson6030 thanks for the reply and info Steve. I’m fascinated by these. I guess it fulfills childhood dreams of running go carts. I’m seriously considering building one of these. I have all of the skills to do it, welding, etc. I’m guessing the peerless diff is the way to go especially if I plan on running on asphalt. I’m also wondering if there are any cyclekart events on the east coast. Again thanks for the info, I’ve already learned a lot from your videos.

@@danbarone7643 The east coast has several areas where groups are forming and having events. If you are on Facebook you will find the Southeast Cyclekart group as well as the Northeast cyclekart group. Depending on where you are on the east coast.

I got it at MFG Supply. But the last time I checked they no longer had it available. Check www.staton-inc.com they may have it

the simple answer is to use your arms. The rear tires are close enough to reach and we can do a bit of 'wheelchair' roll to move around. Some guys have added reverse, but it adds a lot of un-needed weight, cost and complexity

I am slightly hesitant in making this comment because you know your dimension criterion. I would look to setting the disc brake distant from the diff and the sprocket closer to it because the liquid in the diff is limited and the heat from the brake will be relatively high. While the sprocket may run slightly warm it will not have the heat variation of the brake.

Good advice, some guys run 2 separate brake setups. One on each axle. However, after several years of very hard use, no problems so far with the differential. Thanks for watching

@@stevevinson6030 good to hear this. I read some people saying the single brake on the diff wouldn't let you brake at all if one wheel slipped...
