Our podcast episode was recorded before the news about Chase Elliott's suspension had been released, but this video is about Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s initial reaction to the incident at the Coca-Cola 600. Chase and Denny Hamlin made contact multiple times and eventually tensions rose until it could not hold anymore.

I've seen this comment on a lot of this coverage. The problem with it is that Nascar clearly stated that Bubba was suspended for what he did while driving the car, not what happened after he got out of it. So from a racing perspective it's the same thing and got the same penalty. I don't personally like Hamlin or Chase, but the data tells the story. Hamlin was tight and tried getting out of the gas and braking to try to avoid putting Chase into the wall. Chase overreacted and got what he deserved.

What’s not being discussed is how many times that Hamlin has wrecked someone these in the last two years. Wrecked Byron at Texas last year, Larson at Kansas, Chastain at Pocono and Phoenix, JJ Yeley at Richmond, and Chase at Charlotte. If you also notice he wrecked Byron, Chase and Chastain all in the same way. Ran them high off the corner and put them in the wall. The thing no one mentions about this is the move that started the accident to begin with. That move Denny made is almost the same as the one he made to wreck Chastain at Phoenix. It's the move that Chastain and Larson pulled on each other at Darlington. It's the move that Denny and all the other drivers have crucified Chastain for as a dirty over aggressive driving. It's the move that started the problems with Kyle Busch and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. It's a move that puts the car on the outside in a very vulnerable position, yet that is not being talked about. Sure turning someone head on into the outside wall is never ok but neither is forcing someone into the wall.

I really find this discussion interesting and I’ll leave my opinions of the two drivers out of this comment, but this it’s curious how the review of this data is held specifically to the point of contact instead of the data that lead up too the contact. This SMT data sounds pretty accurate to tell NASCAR what a driver is doing, what the car is doing, and helps them determine the cause of any incident; which you would think to include what Hamlin did to slide up into Elliot. I would like to see an analysis of the data where Hamlin slid up into Elliot. What would that show. I worked in Public Safety for years and when I was called to investigate one of our unit’s involvement in an accident we looked at all factors that led up to the incident to consider how to proceed with any actions against our drivers. Furthermore, isn’t this a Panora’s box? If drivers can access other drivers data and then suddenly post the results for the rest of the world to see on Social Media, that would compromise the investigation and future investigations of other incidents. Besides being in poor taste, I think it causes huge issues for regulation of the sport… I love to watch racing and the skill of these athletes (all of them from the driver to the pit crews) work their magic to compete. But, if evaluation telemetry data becomes the norm after incidents like this, and NASCAR expands their enforcement to the telemetry of the cars that could be provoking the other cars, we could see some unfortunate micromanagement scenarios in my opinion. But the only way to get an accurate picture of the cause is to evaluate all the data and factors leading up to the incident which would include any provocative action on the part of the other driver. I believe we should have sound judgement and not let anger fuel actions that could cause injury, so I’m not defending anyone. But, if the argument is to say one driver had good control of their car and could have avoided this incident you have to evaluate why Hamlin slid up into Elliot in the first place; which takes us down a very bumpy road in the future. JW

When was the last time someone got hurt smacking a wall. These cars are really really safe today. Like someone else had said, you only see what they want you to see. If they rewind the race and just watch Dennie’s car. You would see that several times that he slid up the track, he was running Chase into the outside wall. How many times can Chase put up with this kind of driving. Sooner or later ( after Chase’ car is wrecked and not handling very well) Chase has to say something back to Denny. So he wrecked Denny Hamlin. Then Dennie goes off like usual and does his cry baby bullshit. So NASCAR must do something. If they went back far enough they would see how many times he slid into not only to Chase but a few others also. When is NASCAR going to back up their stance. When saying “Have at it Boys” He is a whinny cry baby who only sees it his way. Everyone else is wrong!!!

The only thing missing from this video is your opinion Dale, as to whether or not you think Chase was justified, or close to it. I agree that it totally appears that Chase turned him on purpose. That being said, when a driver of Denny's caliber makes contact, and then 2 laps later runs you into the fence, you have to believe that Denny has more talent then that. These two have history, Denny flat out dumped Chase at Martinsville comes to mind. I bet at that moment Chase felt like he was being disrespected and that his race just got ruined, therefore as drivers do (make very important decisions at the speed of light) he said "Ah hell nah.....". I don't blame him at all. I think this was handled correctly by Nascar, and I believe that in the end, Chase will have even more fans, and Denny will have less.... I think it's pretty obvious that Elliott got tired of Hamlin running him into the wall and turned into Hamlin. Maybe Elliott meant to just hit him in the door, not the quarter panel. To me ,,, the difference between Elliott and Wallace is that Wallace chased Larson down the track a groove or two to hook Larson and then pursued Larson in the infield and laid hands on him ,,, and then laid hands on a NASCAR official. Elliott did his dirty work immediately, and kept it on the track. So much for the "Have at it boys" days. ;)

As far as my point of view. Hamlin squeezed Elliott up against the wall intentional or not. Chase had not fully recovered from that then Bradd Kaslowski unintentionally bumped him or took the air off the spoiler in order to avoid the wreck and as a result Elliott was wiggling and it appears to look like Elliott intentionally wrecked Hamlin. Also I believe Boyer's. Knee jerk reaction was a bit uncalled for as a result influenced everyone including Nascar to punish Elliott for simply trying to gain control of his car. All in all I believe both Elliott and Hamlin are innocent. Hamlin could of taken the high road with class and said rubbing is racing which would have ended this feud. What do you think?

Your point of view is 100% incorrect. You can see clearly on the replays that the #6 didn't bump Elliott until Elliott had already turned into Hamlin. The announcers pointed that out right away. The SMS data doesn't lie. Chase yanked the wheel hard left.
