A conservative accusing anyone else of tribalism is rich. Everything in the conservative lexicon comes down to "us vs. them" mentality. Immigration, Military obsession, Political rhetoric "liberals" "snowflakes" etc., Religion ... is there anything left in American Conservatism that isn't Reactionary Tribal Politics? It doesn't look like it to me. At one point in time, American Conservatives cared about small government and "family values"; but W and Trump prove they only whine about small government when it's not their Big Government. And "family values"... elected a lecherous serial adulterer shielded by wealth. The right in America is, definitively, morally bankrupt. Sad.

"It's made me less of a moron." Most of our stupidity and idiot mistakes seems to be caused by distraction, of not paying attention to the here and now, what we're doing, not thinking things through. Mindfulness makes a huge impact in this area.

I ended up in a treatment center for severe anxiety and depression, and I think mindfulness is one of the most valuable things I learned there. I’m not sure it would have been as effective without also practicing self-compassion - it is pretty hard to practice meditation regularly if every time you do all you can think is how worthless you are. But mindfulness helped me sleep, get in touch with my emotions (they’re more derailing when you can’t experience them) and actually enjoy parts of life. Personally, I found it easiest to practice mindfulness during very low intensity Vinyasa yoga - I am too fidgety for Hatha yoga and many breathing exercises, but normal intensity Vinyasa yoga was too distracting. But even if you fidget through mindfulness meditation exercises, if you keep it up it can really help. I think US culture makes mindfulness particularly difficult. Even just slowing down to really taste your food can improve mindfulness, but was completely foreign to me.

I like that meditation is becoming trendy. I started meditating because of Sam Harris. I have a theory why it works. Getting in a calm place is so people won't disturb you. Closing your eyes is so you can focus your attention on your thoughts (about a third of the brain is involved with seeing). Thinking about the breath makes you take longer breath, which help concentration. This hightened concentration state allows you to become aware of thoughts as you think them, and basically put a layer between you, the subject, and the thought. This layer allows you to distance yourself from your perceptions, which gives you control. The breath is just a tool, something to focus on. You can choose any subject, and be wary not to diverge from it. You're basically training to focus your mind on what you want. And focusing helps you do lots of things, especially hard, important things.

Kavriel I'm happy to hear you get benefit from meditation, but you should be careful with blanket statements about what it is. You likely practice some generic Westernized form of mindfulness, given your description, but it is only 1 of many many forms. You do not need silence, counting breaths, or even need to sit among the hundreds of variations. For something like Vipassana or Shinkantaza, among others, focusing on any task you have to accomplish or idea to consider would completely defeat the purpose. In fact, closing your eyes was discouraged in one form, as it separates you from the world you live in, which is considered a bad thing. I have not listened to Sam Harris for a few years, but his ideas on Buddhism, free will, and global politics were quite simplistic then. Insightful only if you haven't studied them in depth before. His bias showed thru particularly strongly when trying to make all of Buddhism fit his Atheism mold. Good luck on your journey.

Oh, and for anyone who finds focusing on your breathing particularly anxiety provoking (I know people with a history of asthma or panic attacks who found it very disturbing, for me it made me feel like I couldn’t breathe but I have no idea why) you can focus on some other sensation instead. I really liked focusing on the physical sensation of some item in my hand, or whatever sensations I feel in my feet at that moment. Others focus on looking at a particular item, or keep their attention on a repeating noise, or even try to focus on one particular instrument in music you’re listening to. (For beginners, this might be easier with music with no lyrics). The rest of the steps are the same - you just notice when your attention moves from it and then you gently bring it back. For many people, any of these things might bring anxiety, and that’s okay and normal. But focusing on breath can be particularly disturbing for some people, and if that’s the case it is harder to keep up the habit in the beginning.

Cory Relax I'll explain, it's a pun because to "lie down" as in placing your body horizontally over a surface, sounds the same as "lie" as in lying and Trump is a pathological liar, so he lies a lot, therefore if he were to meditate, between the choices of sitting, standing or "lying" he would chose to "lie", do you get it now? I explained it because either you lack any sense of humor and are a bitter Trump butthurt supporter or you are a bit dense, either way you need help. Cheers.

Both Zen and Mindfulness meditation is actually similar things! If have to distinguish, I would say Zen is a next step of being the state of mindfulness. Mindfulness meditation aims to bring you to aware of surrounding, and when you moving to understand or accept how things works, you reach the Zen state. Both have tremendous impact on your brain structure and your behavior. When you achieve what we call Mindfulness and Zen, that's when you reach deep meditation stage

The world is subjective. The subjectivity is (in the highest aspiration) based on facts, but depending on which facts you focus on determines your subjectivity. People recently have been using the word "fact" as if it has some kind of higher meaning, or as a buzzword meant to imply that "their" opinion is valid while others are "subjective". This is wrong. Most people most of the time cherry pick the facts that validate their subjective opinions. Which facts you choose to express or choose to focus on is at the base of the divide.
