In this video work is finished on the Dana 30 axle that came into the shop. Had some trouble with the U joints but finally got some new joints in there with grease fittings. Rotors and hubs assembled, wheel bearings adjusted, and calipers and brake pads finished everything up.

Good video. At the shop I worked at (I am retired tech of 45 years) we had a homemade tool that we could grease the spindle bearing without removing the spindle. We took a steel pipe welded an extra spindle nut on one end, capped the other end, drilled a hole and installed a grease zirk so while you are packing wheel bearings, just screw the tool on the spindle and grease. Also on a side note, the old guy that taught me, was a jeep guy. He would alternate grease one time, and gear lube the next time when servicing the enclosed knuckles.

Hey Brian great video as always, very informative and easy to follow. I just picked up a mid 70's cj Dana 30 narrow trac with drums geared same as my rear and wanted to swap to discs. I also was traded a Dana 30 wide trac with discs, my question is can I just swap all the disc stuff onto the 70's Dana 30 from the knuckles out? Thanks
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 5 жыл бұрын
you will need to swap out the knuckles as when you are building your narrow axle assembly. Also when you have disc brakes be sure to install a disc brake proportioning valve otherwise all the work of putting on discs will be for nothing. You must have the correct valve to give enough braking power to the front brakes. I would keep the early spindles and hubs as well, the 6 bolt setup is better than the later 5 bolt setup. Good luck with your build. Briain

Hi Brian, With the wedge style brakes, how tight do the pads get on the rotor if both are new? Mine are super tight. When installed the rotor does not rotate easily. Is that normal? Love the videos. Working on a 1981 CJ 5 Thanks Scott
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 3 жыл бұрын
The brakes should not be tight on the rotor. The hub/rotor should spin freely. Make sure your caliper is retracted all the way then put your brakes on. When you bleed the brakes they should retract enough for the assemble to spin freely.

50 foot pounds sounds like an incredible amount for preload on that axle bearing, is it typically that high? I could see it being 50, on the second nut, but on that first one, the one that actually loads the bearing?
@johndoe43

Frank paya. Check the book. You go 50 and then back it off a certain amount. I always rotate while tightening and get it where I have no play and no bind in rotation. I play around for a while here until I'm happy. Smooth rotation with zero play. Without the wheel mounted its a little tough to tell zero play. Hence I play around. Rock back and forth to feel play

Question regarding pointing the pinion down to test leaking. Mine was just rebuilt and I had it pointing down (not really on purpose). I noticed a very small drip spot on the floor the next day. This was an unfilled diff, recently disassembled and I thought this may just be assembly lube ... but in any case wasn't really what I wanted to see. Is this worth replacing the pinion seal, which would be basically replacing a new part??
@metalshaperJeep

If it is leaking already without being installed and used it will probably be a problem. It can be the seal or the yoke itself. I would fill it with lube and let it hang down overnight to see what happens. Brian
