Should you get a 21:9 ultrawide monitor? I have been using one for a long time now. It isn't a clear win, but there are many pros and cons, including support in gaming. I give my thoughts on ultrawide monitors in this video. My monitor is an LG 34GK950F-B 34" LG Ultragear if anyone is curious. Here is a link to it on Amazon: amzn.to/3ke6L1M
Note that the link above is an associate link so I may get a small percentage if you buy through it at no additional cost to you (great way to support the channel).

Finally some love for a 3440x1440 monitor! I have had one for awhile now. Like when $600 was a great deal for this size ultrawide with 60 Hz. The talk for the past year or two is all about 4K gaming. But there is no way I can drop down to 27” monitor. I’m just too spoiled with that beautiful FOV. Now, I mainly play RPG’s, and take lots of high quality screenshots as a hobby. So this is perfect for me. I just may upgrade to a 120hz or 144 hz UW some day. Gotta get a new GPU first. This is by far the best video I have seen on the topic. You covered everything I could think of. Keep up the great work!

Yea 4K seems incredibly overrated, especially when most semi-affordable 4K screens are under 30 inches anyways. And high spec ultrawides have come down in price A LOT recently. Last year I got my curved 34" 3440x1440 ultrawide with 144hz and good color depth for only 375usd (Xiaomi, but ASUS and other common brands also have decent prices). I could never go back to a 16:9 aspect ratio, and 3440x1440 is 3K resolution anyways, close enough to 4K that you don't notice a real visual difference, but you still get better performance in games and a far better FOV experience in games and also for production.

These are great informative videos keep these kind coming, great work. I've been using an LG ultrawide for years which I use for RTS such as command and conquer, Ashes of the singularity, my gsync for FPS @ 2k basically fast-paced games. And my 4k 32inch benq for the likes of the platform genre, no man's sky since it looks so good with hdr on the monitor switched on. It's a pity blizzard doesn't allow ultrawide for diablo, starcraft since this is a co-op game with latter I'll admit being competitive it should be an option for non-competitve play like in custom games.

Wish HDR would not have to be a global windows setting, but just switchable by any fullscreen game. At least in win10 HDR on it breaks so many things in productivity use, including the built in screenshot tool.

I decided to go with a 34inch ultra wide earlier this year. I have been working from home since covid hit and grew tired of just one monitor. I also didn't want to deal with setting up two monitors. I picked up the ASUS Gaming TUF VG34VQL1B and it is really nice. As for gaming, Flawless Widescreen is a free app you can download that has built in mods for a lot of games to make them work at ultra wide resolutions if they don't support them natively. I don't think I could ever go back to 16:9 gaming.

Same here, screen is Xiaomi but otherwise similar specs to the ASUS variant, also 34 inch. Can't go back to 16:9 monitors ever, it just doesn't feel right. I've also found that a lot of games have gotten ultrawide support over the years, some used to be "fake" ultrawide but even in esports you can get true ultrawide such as in CSGO or Overwatch 2, which is awesome, and in cinematic games like Cyberpunk it's a literal gamechanger that people with regular aspect ratio screens really are missing out on so much immersion.

I have built my first gaming pc last May of this year and immediately went for an ultrawide monitor (LG34GK950G). High-end pc's should be paired with high-end monitors in my opinion for the ultimate experience :). But on the otherhand, people might be thrown off by the cost of such monitors (depending on refresh rate, hdr, etc). Regarding desk space, I'd highly recommend getting a monitor arm btw. It'll give a nice edge to your set-up.

big plus for calling out people who build super PCs and cheap out on monitor! 😜 At the beginning of the year, I bought 27GL850, long story short it is exactly as reviewers said but that was what I was looking for so I'm happy. I still have my old monitor and now it is the "second one", for the work that I do having a bigger main monitor and smaller second works rly nice, and for garming doesn't metter since I'm gaming on the main one only. IMHO ultrawide just for gaming isn't best option, better to go with a good one with a normal aspect ration and if you want more immersion then VR is waiting for you :D

Hi guys, I originally bought a 27" 16:9 (PG279Q), then a bit later bought a 34" ultrawide 21:9 ( x34p)... Both are IPS, Gsynch 1440p monitors. Then I picked up another PG279Q for a total of 3, the x34p is my main gaming screen between the twin PG279Qs Another mate also had a PG279Q so we swapped out the x34p for a while, this allowed me to use nVidia surround display as all 3 of my monitors at that point were identical aspect ratio. So, gaming wise for racing or flying games this was amazing, but I still play alot of PUBG and FPS games are not great for a 3 screen set-up. After a while we swapped back monitors so I'm back on x34p If you are considering an ultrawide I highly recommend getting a sturdy monitor arm mount and save a boatload of desk space without the monitor stand. I can play with either 16:9 or 21:9, I prefer 21:9 hands down. Also moves are using this standard aspect ratio so no black bars when watching movies!

I love my 21:9 as a daily driver for working from home. As far as gaming, I can't make up my mind. I originally bought my ultrawide for gaming but then moved it to my work desk. The prices on good 21:9 high refresh rate IPS should be getting into the range of something I would consider as I do like eye candy games just as much as E sports, but then I still prefer a standard monitor for E sports. Quake Champions allows you to monkey with the FOV to gain a peripheral advantage, but your timing for swinging becomes different. Then you have media consumption...where I much prefer a 4k or 5K ultrafine IPS. For gaming I run a nice IPS 165hz LG at 1440p and I have a cheap portable TN flat panel stuck on the wall next to it so that it doesnt take up any space and I can monitor chat or hardware performance to the side (sometimes KZfaq). So yea.... My office has 3 Computers and 6 screens (one is just a TV hooked up to cable).

I've been doing that simulating ultrawide on my 4k. To me, it works out really well cause if you have a game that doesn't support the ultrawide, you can always just use the whole thing as 16:9 and be fine. We're all used to watching movies with top and bottom black boarders so it doesn't bother me.

I remember the first time I beat Bioshock: Infinite on Ultrawide, it was really janky with the ending cinematic. At the end, where all the Elizaeth's spawn. They're suppose to spawn in off-screen, and then walk into frame. But with ultra-wide you get to watch them just pop into existence, and it was really funny.

Another great video and well timed topic with new GCs on the way. I am building an ITX rig to go with my LG C9 65” OLED which will double up as my living room telly to save space. I think it is a great set up for gaming and especially with the new 2020 LG CX coming in 48” it becomes borderline desktop monitor. These TVs are 4K @ 120hz which makes them great monitors to tap on to the full potential of these new gen Ampere and Navi GCs. Also to note that the new AMD 6000s support VRR through HDMI 2.1 as well as Freesync which was not supported by LG 2019 OLEDs so anyone with one of those 2019 OLEDs like myself don’t need to bother if you going with new gen AMDs (there is a hack for Freesync for older AMDs If anyone is interested). GSync on the other hand is supported by both 2019 and 2020 models. I think it is a setup worth considering if you are buying a monitor for new gen cards because from my experience image on OLED just blows your mind compared to any IPS displays out there. Of course, you are limited to 120hz so anyone in competitive gaming and looking for higher refresh rate will need to go traditional route. PS- since you in to music, should we expect to see some audio gear videos in the future?

Not a fan of using oversized TVs as PC monitors. I used to drive an old but expensive Sony Bravia 40 inches full HD TV as my monitor many years ago when monitors were still behind in image quality compared to good TVs, now that the pixel quality and color accuracy of desktop monitors have improved to a point where it doesn't make too big of a difference, I prefer my super ultrawide + portrait side monitor + normal 16:9 on top setup. The issue with displays bigger than 32 inches as desktop monitors is the vertical centering, they are just too tall and your eyes will not be centered to the monitor/TV and you have to constantly look up to see the middle and the upper part of the screen, not ideal at all.
@suhaib1249
@suhaib1249 3 жыл бұрын
@@versaleyang fair point if I am using my PC for anything other than gaming, it could make a difference but TVs have come a long way since Bravia HD days. In my case, I am building this to replace my gaming console in my living room, my workhorse is an iMac. Having said that 48” LG CX OLED is borderline monitor size if you have a large desk and is a great set up for gaming and productivity. Another benefit of OLED is that you can create any aspect ratio with those perfect black bands so versatility is great.

I've used 1, 2 then 3 24 inch monitors before going to an ultrawide, hands down game immersion is amazing in a curved ultrawide. Just need more 5k2k monitors to come out. 5k2k is just what they call a 4k ultrawide.
@adriankoch964
@adriankoch964 Жыл бұрын
5k2k is probably the worst naming scheme after standalone "2k"as reference for 1440p. One the one hand it means ~5000 pixel horizontal width ... but then not even rounds to 2000 pixel vertical? "4k" is pretty much exactly 2000 pixel vertical. I wish we'd have a system that would use the multiplied horizontal&vertical res+aspect ratio. Would make it so much easier to eyeball GPU demand as well. (in 16:9 land 4k is 8MP, 1440p is ~3.6MP and 1080p is ~2MP - super obvious why you need a 4x faster GPU to run games in 4k at 1080p framerates)

Lots of good points in this video. I went ultrawide (21:9) and I have to say, it feels strange how few people go ultrawide. I guess they don't consider it because they think only few games support it, or that it's too wide etc. But once you try it you feel insane about playing/working at 16:9 anymore. In my experience most games, even many old games do support ultrawide out of the box, and large part of those that dont, have some custom fix you can google for. But of course there are some that absolutely dont and wont support it. I'd say there are two things to check if you are thinking about ultrawide. 1. Google the list of ultrawide supported games. Check if any game is there that you spend 70% of your time playing. Then you might want to consider if it's worth it. Otherwise, absolutely go for it. 2. Budget. I got my 21:9 monitor (Xiaomi 34") for 399€. Same price would have gotten me a 27" IPS with better colours. However, while the Xiaomi doesn't have amazing colours, they are fine. And it has 144hz and freesync and solid quality otherwise. I'd say even the ~400-500$ price range ultrawides are decent if you are not a huge snob when it comes to colours. Otherwise you'll have to pay many hundreds more.

I'm still sitting on a 1080p monitor and this is definitely the best time to upgrade as even the cheapest second hand GPUs can drive anything without mayor issues. In my country is extremely hard to buy thing as price just double (literally) but with new OLED monitors IPS/VA are becoming even more affordable even on the 34" size of things. For anyone seeking best of the best surely second gen of OLED might turn things around once the exclusivity of few brands selling OLEDs would finish and other companies will jump on the OLED train to offer better prices in the long run as competition kick in.

Good video. Its a bit of a tough choice - I can tell it would be amazing for games that are well supported. I think just the edge cases might dissuade me though. Also its harder to drive which would force me potentially to upgrade more frequently. One thing you didn't mention is multimedia. I use my screen for watching TV shows / netflix and i have a lot of mixed content. Some of it might be from *cough* questionable sources. I wonder how that goes?

For multimedia, many movies are 21:9 so it is fantastic, and many newer shows are close (like 2:1). The worst is 21:9 content that has been rendered as 16:9 video with black bars, but there are ways to crop in and fill the screen in those cases.

I'm on 1080p ultrawide 29" on an arm + 4k 55" TV 1.8 meters away on a downward tilted mount. Both look about the same width from my POV but the 4k TV has text a little too small to use on 100% scaling (and text scaling can be a mess in many situations). So many games and websites STILL have issues with scaling their UI (i.e. scale with horizontal resolution which causes some things being cropped in the vertical axis, or in games some UI elements not being correctly centered), and then there are all of the fucking youtube videos (any Sony trailer for example) with backed letterboxing that give you 30% less screen usage. It's definitely nice when it works well just more often than not its a degraded experience. I don't like using my 21:9 in portrait mode, mostly because the panel doesn't look very nice this way. Somehow it looks more pixelated from the viewing angle. If I were to get a new screen, it'd be a 16:9 screen at a slightly larger horizontal width of my current 21:9 screen and 4k res but still mountable on the arm. If I want ultrawide, I can always force a wider resolution on a 16:9, pullt it closer and increase FOV and just not use the extra pixels and use powertools to make tiling easier. Having the 4k screen closer to me would also solve the text scaling issues. Can't recommend a monitor arm enough. I use a NB100 that can mount up to 14kg (not enough for a LG C1, sadly maybe newer 40" models will be a bit lighter when it's upgrade time). Really helps with posture as you can move the screen to the ideal position in a moments notice and not changing your posture to see something in detail etc. Honestly I wish I could get even a bit more range out of my monitor arm, but with a slightly bigger screen that shouldn't be an issue anymore.

It's just sad that most movie and game trailers are being released in 16:9 with baked letterboxing, so on a ultrawide you see everything like it was a 40% smaller screen with black letterboxes on all 4 sides in fullscreen, even though youtube supports a 21:9 video format just fine.

@Lobos222
@Lobos222 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the rest of your system. How good is your 3d card, what is the 3d cards native resolution support etc. Overall, the more pixel you have, the more power you need from your GPU. If you have a good GPU, you wont notice more than maybe needing to cut a few details to low, like shadows, turn of AA or similar. If you have a bad GPU then you might notice more. I had a very good GPU, but poor CPU and went from max setting with ultra gore in Killing Floor 2 to needing to turn down some other details that are not as obvious. However in Doom 2 (new one) I didnt have to change anything and still got very good fps. Other types of games like RTS etc seem to have zero impact. In short, yes, more pixels means more power needed, but often the difference is not huge. However if your GPU is trash. You might need to upgrade that as well.

I want to replace my monitors with a good ultrawide with Freesync and HDR (at least HDR600), but there are just no decent options. Does anyone have any experience with 1440p 1440hz vs 4k 60fps? Doesnt seem to make much sense buying a 4k 144hz monitor now when bechmarks are around 80fps 4k

Most people that play at 4K usually set the graphics to medium because of the condensed pixels you won't really notice the higher-end details on the monitor. So they can hit 120fps at 4K because of medium settings. But I play at 1440p and with a 3080 I think it is far superior at ULTRA settings to 4K at medium or even high.
