The Perfect Waves You’ll NEVER Surf…

Did you know there’s an island surrounded by perfect waves, with no one out, ever? The only catch, is you’re not allowed to surf them. The other day I was up late, in a geography documentary rabbit hole (one of my favourite pastimes, other than surfing), when I came across this island. The island is home to one of the last uncontacted tribes on Earth, with a unique history, and several fascinating incidents of “contact” from the outside world. This video explores that story. Enjoy!

There is a place, situated in an area called thevred triangle -- Not in reference to ginger girls' anatomies -- that i have gazed in awe upon some reefish peeling coifs, alone A friend born on the ranch far south, famed for its hands coming down to assure that resting surfers remained below the kelpy tide line, and i, strolling upon said shelvy shore, pressed some pinnipeds, with generous portions of their posteriors penetrated by large crescent cutouts. I remarked of the resulting redolence, " it smells like gorgonzola cheese." As yet, i camembert no semblance of surfing has ensued. I have passed over one of the landlords off that shore, skipping above one triple the size of that sailboard, without pausing to pet him.

Mate,l skippered a dive boat in Burma in the late 1990's that used to sometimes do surf trips to the Andamans.The first time was with a bunch of pros and a large segment was used in the footage for the film thicker than water.The next season we got permission to go to Nortn Sentinel.We surfed the reef pass that is slap bang in the middle of the south side of the fringe reef for 4 days straight.Every day we saw the sentinelese on the beach and sometimes in dug out canoes.so every night we moved 5 miles offshore and just drifted for the night then returned in the morning.We also surfed a wave on the west side near one of the wrecks. So next time you wish to call me a liar maybe have a think about what you are about to say.

@@mattbaker3074 Its true, the pass has been surfer before by this mate and, perhaps another group of pros I read about where they played music by a band called AIR as the natives approached in a canoe. Not sure if this was your trip there Matt, but nonetheless your account sounds totally legit, and what is amusing is people who make assumptions about surfing history without having done a mite of research.

Great vid Dan. Been enjoying your channel mate. It's better that the North Sentinalese have this island to themselves than some private resort owning and blocking access to the waves ..ala Maldives.. I've always wanted to see someone float in some boards as gifts to them with some magazines (all sterilised so we don't infect them with Westerner disease!!) showing what surfing looks like and let them figure it out. It'd be a fascinating experiment! *Edit* The right and left off the southern part of the island on either side of the big channel look like they'd both absolutely crank! The right appears to be hundreds of meters long!

It appears that the sign language was completely misconstrued. The passing of the hand across the adam's apple is the worldwide signal that "gentlemen are required to wear ties when surfing at this establishment." The befuddled Sentinelese also got the Hawaiian luau pig recipe wrong: first you heat the rocks, THEN you drop the pig in the pit. Too many generations visiting McAndaman's, l'art du cuisine has been lost, although the missionary menu item, is, fortunately, somewhat remembered.

@wisdomoverfear2685
@wisdomoverfear2685 5 ай бұрын
@@lostern Me and my 2 friends where the first ones to paddle out at a pass between Sanibel and Captiva island. It was just a few minutes after the sun came up and we ŵere joking about who was going to get the first wave . My friend Rob was on a 7 foot fun board and he was out in the lineup before me and my other friend Paul even had our wetsuits zipped up. So me and Paul jump 8n the ripping north to south current and start paddling towards the outside sandbar. Right after getting past the shallow sandbar and into dee0er water I got knocked up and out of the water by a massive hammerhead. My friend Paul was about 30-35 feet away and saw everything ! He paddled right back to the beach. I had to retrieve my 6'8" Linden because the leash broke. All I saw was a huge dark Grey fin sticking up a couple feet out of the water swimming away rather quickly ! Paul told me when I got to the beach it was big enough to swallow me in 1 or 2 bites. He estimated it was 16-18' if not bigger ! I weighed a little over 220 pounds and was thrown out of th water from the impact ! My board had a creased imprint that went all the way across my 20" wide board. We yelled to my friend Rob about the shark and he waved us off and kept surfing. I had a choice to make that day and me and my friend Paul figured it was a one in a million incident and the odds of it happening again where astronomical. So we paddled back out and scored epic waves for a couple hours before the crowds showed up. Had I not went back out that day I probably never would of surfed again. I remember standing on the beach looking at my now dinged up board and I remember never having felt so small and insignificant as I was in the Ocean....even the Gulf of Mexico. Anyone familiar with that area knows the spot I was at is literally a few short miles from a known hammerhead breeding grounds ! The spot is just a few minutes by boat south of Boca Grande pass ! Look up the tarpon tournaments held there to see what kind of sharky waters the whole area is. This happened in the 1990's and at that time there was a legend about a great Hammerhead named ol' Hitler that many witnesses claimed took many a whole tarpon from fishermen ! Pretty sure I had an up close and personal encounter ! This story is true and accurate too the best of my recollection !

Mate people have been sailing up through there since Adam was a boy , and it is not uncommon for cruisers to stop off for a look and a paddle . Plenty of story’s shared at anchorages up through the Nicobar , Andaman of people surfing North Sentinel , spots even have names . I have surfed North Sentinel on two seperate passages , no drama on either occasions . You are more likely to see a Unicorn than the Indian Navy or any other authority up there . Cheers 😎☠️

While it is not common to see the Indian Navy anywhere in either the Andamans or the Nicobar Islands, they do have helicopter and ship patrols. The Navy helicopter hovered over us for a good 20 minutes one day as we spoke to them the radio, eventually convincing them we had the proper permissions to be in the area and they flew off. So quiet after that racket. There was also an incident with an Indian Navy ship in the Nicobar Islands that was a very close call, if we were caught in that area it would likely result in a prison sentence - but we were not. Take a look around in in Port Blair harbour - see those groups of boats in the distance? If you get close to them, you will see they have a big chain running thru the wheelhouses - all the boats are chained together in groups, the Burmese boats in one area, Indonesian boats in another, chained and locked for months until fines for illegal fishing are paid and the boat snd their crews can be released. So the Indian Navy is not an idle threat, but it is possible to nip over to North Sentinel for a quick surf and not get caught. @@requinsrequins7953

Personally as much as love surfing and being a wave junkie I'm glad no one is surfing those waves. Respect their land. Who wants the damage and contamination of the rest of the world.

Nice research, but its kinda sensationalist calling them world class waves just from looking at a sattelite still picture… you actually have no idea if the waves are even surfeable, a lot of setups can look perfect on Google Earth or from afar but when you actually get there they are to fast, no wall etc etc. there are just too many factors at play that calling these world class waves just from a satelite image is a bit of a stretch

I stayed with a 70 year old kiwi surfer called Ben 10 years ago in bali who professed to have surfed North sentinel in the 90s. Adamant this was true. His story was that he paid a fisherman and ventured with his small trawler type boat under cover of dark to moor the boat behind a rocky outcrop. the captain was fearful of the tribe and wouldn't go too close. So he paddled out before sun up out to some waves and surfed a few waves as the sun was rising. He noticed that locals were started to amass on the beach and getting duggouts so he said at that point he turned tail & paddled back to the boat and quickly scarpered. Perhaps he's not the only one who's scored some swell. So there may have been some surfers who have done it.
